COMPUTER-aided design, COMPUTER software, and RAPID prototyping
A provider of rapid prototypes and production parts, Quickparts.com has been working directly with vendors of computer-aided design (CAD) software to make it easier for customers to get quotes and order parts. The company has developed a new ordering software called QuickQuote which has been accepted by Autodesk as an add-in for its Inventor CAD software. Four years ago, the company came up with a way for customers to get instant quotes online, providing prices within 30 seconds. The company claims that manual quotes often take two or three days. The quotes are based on algorithms that calculate costs from information that the customer provides on material, process and quantity. All quotes are binding and the technical and sales support staffs are available to provide further information. In its first version, Quickparts provided quotes directly from its web site based on the customers' standard triangulated language (STL) files. The company then came out with MyQuote, a software tool that allows the customer to get quotes for parts directly from a desktop computer without accessing the Quickparts web site. The QuickQuote software may be downloaded from the Quickparts web site. The program allows users to get quotes and buy rapid prototypes, cast urethanes, CNC machined parts, metal castings, sheet metal parts, injection molding tooling and metal castings directly through the Inventor environment.

The Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal, the Canadian engineering school, is testing software intended to promote collaboration between design and manufacturing engineers. The manufacturing software has been installed in the Ecole's Virtual Enterprise Laboratory, which is used to design, prototype, and validate new products. They coordinate on geometric modeling, digital simulation, analysis, and kinematics, and on defining manufacturability and manufacturing strategy, said Ricardo Camarero, director of the mechanical design department at the school.
