Abstract
Truman Capote merges the gothic and the sentimental in his 'Other Voices, Other Rooms.' The result is a hybrid gothic sentimentalism that evokes sympathy for the characters and suggests that love of any kind should be prized. The label 'Southern gothic' has been used too casually, and this approach obscures the sentimental elements of the novel. The characters are not shown simply as freakish and grotesque but are portrayed as sympathetic and poignant.
