Adex Corp.'s $299.95 MacProto and Creative Solutions's $279 Hurdler II add-in circuit boards are designed to interface with the Mac II NuBus. The MacProto has a slot-declaration ROM and an 8-bit parallel port which drives a multi-color LED for debugging purposes. The port allows the user only seven bits. MacProto does not have bus reset nor a device driver, but it does offer a large wire-wrap area. Documentation for the MacProto is useless without a schematic or ample programming examples. The Hurdler II has a 12-bit parallel port that is implemented by a Zilog Z8536, which adds three 16-bit timers. Support circuitry on the Hurdler II enables LSI chip interface, and the slot-declaration ROM supplies an automatic device driver. The manual provides a complete driver listing and full schematics.

Programming utility, Software single product review, Software Designs Unlimited Inc. -- Product information -- 00212703, FaceSpan 2.0 (Programming utility) -- Evaluation, and Program development software -- Evaluation
Software Designs Unlimited's $199 FaceSpan 2.0 lets developers quickly build user interfaces with AppleScript and allows very fast interface prototyping. The user first builds the look and feel of the program with such objects as windows, menus, buttons, text, lists, pop-up menus and artwork. Any object can have a script attached, and there is a useful Message window for debugging. FaceSpan lets users integrate complex scripts into stand-alone applications that have a very professional appearance. Simple spreadsheets called Tables aid database interactions, and Gauges can function as progress bars, increment arrows or sliders. FaceSpan is very extensible and has such interesting features as the ability to make menus hierarchical. It supports QuickTime and drag and drop and includes a set of excellent demos. Drawbacks include a lack of support for runtime printing and lack of clear documentation for some features.
