The article deals with case studies of selected architectural designs of the past fifteen years the authors of which intended to rethink both the typology and the means of constructing single family houses. The analysis covers contemporary design issues such as variation, curvilinearity, customization, digital manufacturing and ecological concerns. The purpose behind the research was to establish in what way new design and production methods may contribute in creating customized passive houses for middle class families in Poland. The article focuses on the staircase design of a south-London residence by Atmos Studio as a new modernist expression. The staircase is described as a mathematical array of 15 gradual steps into the second floor looking modern yet with a traditional feel that could be called a fabricated object (fabject) developed using modern digital technology and prototyping. Also presented are protographs, floor plan of the house and architectural drawing of the staircase.
