Initial control prototyping in power electronics is often a matter of trial and error because of the complicated mathematics involved in modeling systems based on their internal structure. Moreover, in practice, small changes as the introduction of a measurement filter or the change of the sensing system appear all the time. If the controller design method was based on the internal structure of the system, then these small changes would mean a re-iteration through all the cumbersome equations. This paper presents a simple methodology for fast control prototyping based on the approximation of the Bode plots. As prerequisites, a power electronics simulation software as PSIM is needed. The method is presented by taking as a study case the design of a current control loop of a 30kW three phase interleaved DC-DC converter. Simulations are presented for the different considered controllers, and finally the method is validated by experimental results.

In this paper we present our approach regarding the implementation of new wireless radio receiver exploiting filterbank techniques, using a software-development driven approach. Since most of the common radio communications systems share a similar structure, this can be exploited creating a framework which provides a generic layout and tools to construct a reconfigurable transmitter and/or receiver. By combining the use of the Universal Software Radio Peripheral version 2 (USRP2) with a generic object-oriented framework of our own built on top of the GNU Radio software framework, we have been able to quickly implement a working proof of concept of an Uplink (UL) Filterbank Multicarrier (FBMC) receiver, both for Single- Input Single-Output (SISO) and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) scenario, within the project of the 7th European framework called PHYDYAS. We described here the methodology we have applied from software engineering in order to build this demonstrator, which shows the suitability of using Software Defined Radio (SDR) technologies for fast prototyping of new wireless communication systems.

The base of aircraft data (BADA) model provides accurate modelling of aircraft performances over the complete flight envelope for flight simulation and prediction applications. BADA is based on a generic total energy model, which performance functions (e.g., drag, maximum and minimum thrust, fuel flow) are particularised for each aircraft type with coefficients included in the BADA databases. BADA has a high reputation within the academic and research world, thus it is widely used for air traffic management research applications. This poster presents the architecture and capabilities of pyBada, a Python-based software designed for the easy integration of the BADA model in trajectory simulation, prediction and optimisation applications.

This paper introduces a simulation architecture to evaluate the implementation of a va- riety of civil UAS missions with little recon guration time and overhead. This architecture, called Icarus Simulation Integrated Scenario (ISIS), is capable of simulating the behavior of the UAS from the mission point of view, but also is able to include additional aerial/ground vehicles. Additionally, the mutual interaction between vehicles and the interaction with their surrounding environment is modeled. The objective of ISIS is to minimize both the development e ort and risk, as well as to provide a feasible migration of the software from the testbed platform to the real ight platform. The UAS simulator is designed as a distributed simulation architecture in which vehicles and environment are modeled through specialized pieces of software. A service-oriented communication middleware provides the underlying infrastructure to easily implement the inter-vehicle coordination and even the coordination with third party applications providing additional simulated vehicles or simulated environment. A UAS-based forest re monitor- ing application is selected to describe the ISIS capabilities to coordinate the simulation of a multi-vehicle cooperative environment developing a complex mission.

Hardware customization for scientific applications has shown a big potential for reducing power consumption and increasing performance. In particular, the automatic generation of ISA extensions for General-Purpose Processors (GPPs) to accelerate domain-specific applications is an active field of research to accelerate. Those domain-specific accelerated processors are mostly evaluated in simulation environments due to technical and programmability issues while using real hardware. There is no automatic mechanism to test those custom units in a real hardware environment. In this paper we present a toolchain that can automatically identify candidate parts of the code suitable for reconfigurable hardware acceleration. We validate our toolchain using ClustalW.

Wireless community networks are a successful example of a collective where communities operate ICT infrastructure and provide IP connectivity based on the principle of reciprocal resource sharing of network bandwidth. This sharing, however, has not extended to computing and storage resources, resulting in very few applications and services which are currently deployed within community networks. Cloud computing, as in today's Internet, has made it common to consume resources provided by public clouds providers, but such cloud infrastructures have not materialized within community networks. We analyse in this paper socio-technical characteristics of community networks in order to derive scenarios for community clouds. Based on an architecture for such a community cloud, we implement a prototype for the incentive-driven resource assignment component, deploy it in a test bed of community network nodes, and evaluate its behaviour experimentally. Our evaluation gives insight into how the deployed prototype components regulate the consumption of cloud resources taking into account the users' contributions, and how this regulation affects the system usage. Our results suggest a further integration of this regulation component into current cloud management platforms in order to open them up for the operation of an ecosystem of community cloud.

- Abstract
-
In the past years numerous algorithms, schemes and techniques have been proposed, in order to improve the performance of the wireless multi-antenna communication systems. Real-time multi-antenna testbeds are offering the means to analyse the real-world performance, implementation cost and feasibility of such novel techniques, accounting for hardware limitations and software constraints. This paper presents the physical-layer (PHY) design, implementation and validation of a high-performance real-time mobile WiMAX transceiver, accounting for low-level deployment issues and signal impairments. A first evaluation of the acquired results for both Single Input Single Output (SISO) and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system-configurations, demonstrates the performance of the system using real-time channel emulation.

In this paper we reflect empirically on some collective attempts at intervening the ways in which care for and by disabled people is being devised and carried out in Spain in austerity times. We highlight the novelties and challenges of the way in which these projects seek to tackle the current crisis of care through different forms of self-fabrication of 'open' and 'low cost' technical aids. We analyse them as forms of 'critical making' expanding the repertoire of independent-living and disabled people's rights politics to the experimentation with technological production. Through the deployment of an empirical example of the prototyping process by the Barcelona-based activist design collective 'En torno a la silla' we show how open prototyping constitutes a major challenge for the radicalisation of the independent-living movement's precepts of control and choice, displaying the matter of care arrangements and making available its transformation.

This paper aims to present a new methodology to manufacture micro-channels suitable for high operating pressures and micro particle image velocimetry (µPIV) measurements using a rapid-prototyping high-resolution 3D printer. This methodology can fabricate channels down to 250 µm and withstand pressures of up to 5 ± 0.2 MPa. The manufacturing times are much shorter than in soft lithography processes. The novel manufacturing method developed takes advantage of the recently improved resolution in 3D printers to manufacture an rapid prototyping technique part that contains the hose connections and a micro-channel useful for microfluidics. A method to assemble one wall of the micro-channel using UV curable glue with a glass slide is presented – an operation required to prepare the channel for µPIV measurements. Once built, the micro-channel has been evaluated when working under pressure and the grease flow behavior in it has been measured using µPIV. Furthermore, the minimum achievable channels have been defined using a confocal microscopy study. This technique is much faster than previous micro-manufacturing techniques where different steps were needed to obtain the micro-machined parts. However, due to current 3D printers ' resolutions (around 50 µm) and according to the experimental results, channels smaller than 250-µm2 cross-section should not be used to characterize fluid flow behaviors, as inaccuracies in the channel boundaries can deeply affect the fluid flow behavior. The present methodology is developed due to the need to validate micro-channels using µPIV to lubricate critical components (bearings and gears) in wind turbines. This novel micro-manufacturing technique overcomes current techniques, as it requires less manufacturing steps and therefore it is faster and with less associated costs to manufacture micro-channels down to 250-µm2 cross-section that can withstand pressures higher than 5 MPa that can be used to characterize microfluidic flow behavior using µPIV.

Flexible symmetric supercapacitor prototypes composed of electrodes that were prepared by polymerizing poly(hydroxymethyl-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) inside a poly-¿-glutamic acid (¿PGA) biohydrogel matrix, previously loaded with microparticles of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and alumina (Al2O3), have been fabricated and characterized. Prototypes have been assembled in a totally solid, compact and lightweight configuration, where the supporting electrolytic medium is a ¿PGA hydrogel prepared in presence of NaHCO3. The elements of the prototypes have been characterized and their optimized to obtain the highest specific capacitance. The electrochemical performances of the prototypes have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge galvanostatic cycles and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. After 2000 charge-discharge cycles (i.e. 60.000¿s of continuous operation), the loss of specific capacitance is of only 8%, revealing an excellent stability. Results are very promising for the development of compact, flexible, lightweight and biocompatible supercapacitors to be employed like energy-autonomous electronic devices.

This paper presents through an example a software process model addressed to support the existence of multiple implementations when programming with abstract data types. We combine an equational style for specifying types and an imperative one for implementing them. Implementations may be selected by means of ad hoc language constructs in the appropriate contexts; another language construct, the abstraction function, allows implicit switching between implementations during execution and it also allows prototyping of incomplete programs. So, the resulting software process model permits the user to reach the final program as a sequence of intermediate executable prototypes.
