Electricity, Magne-crystallic actions, and Light

Tyndall's manuscript offers an annotated bibliography of his published works. A professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institute in London from 1853, Tyndall conducted research in that subject as well as in physics, electricity, heat, light, sound, and glaciology. His interest in glaciers lead him to become a mountaineer and Mt. Tyndall, a peak near the Matterhorn, is named for him.

This collection contains individual letters or small groups of letters from the correspondence of scientists, physicians, and other health practitioners. Provenences vary greatly. Some were donated by collectors or descendentsof the recipient, others purchased, and others removed from books in the Historical Library in which collectors had placed them. Most letters were acquired in the period before 1960. Members of the Beaumont Medical Club collected and donated letters related to Connecticut medicine. John F. Fulton, in particular, purchased individual letters from book stores and book sellers for the collection. A number of the letters in the collection are to and from Yale School of Medicine faculty members. There are also some letters by Yale medical students and alumni. Of particular note in this collection are letters on inoculation and vaccination for smallpox, and on anesthesia. With a few exceptions, letters are arranged alphabetically by writer.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of copies of 210 letters to and from Henry Baker, dating from 1722 to 1770. The letters discuss contemporary affairs, such as the Jacobite Rebellion and the London earthquake in 1750, as well as scientific subjects, especially microscopy, electricity, and the education of deaf children. A letter in 1743/4 addressed "To Mr. Blair" gives an account of Baker's life; elsewhere, he writes, "Nothing hardly has been thought of at London lately but Experiments in Electricity: one of the prettiest of which is, I think, the electrifying Trees in Pots, from the Leaves whereof, upon the Approach of the Hand, or any non-electric Body fine Purple Flames issue out of an Inch or more in length." Another letter, written by Robert Blair in 1744, declares, "Amongst many kinds of Seeds which I have been lately Examining, there is one which I think uncommonly beautiful in the seed of the Indian Scabious," and includes a copy of a poem titled "To Sacharissa Weeping," which he calls "a little trifle of mine;" another letter by Blair dated 1745 expresses anxiety about "a good many copy's of the 2d Edition of my Poem of the Grave that are not yett disposed of" and begs Baker to recommend the poem to his acquaintances. Other correspondents include William Arderon, P. Doddridge, and P. Collinson.

Nollet annotated in French the first book of Beccaria's Italian text Dell'elettricismo artificiale enaturale (1753) ; the marginalia was truncated when the text was bound with 6 other printed scientific texts, including Nollet's works on icebergs and the transmission of sound through water (1743), Bouguer and Bazin on the compass (1731 and 1753, the latter with 15 plates by Striedbeck), Desaguliers on electricity (1742) and Dutour on magnetism (1746). Dutour annotated his title page in 1748 ; this volume bears his bookplate. His title on flyleaf: Pieces sur le magnetisme et electricité ; in French.

Correspondence and various other papers of Franklin's, most originally from the Cadwallader Colden Papers (1743-1786). Topics include the formation of the American Philosophical Society; scientific subjects such as circulation of the blood in animals, effect of rotation of the earth upon speed of sailing vessels, law of gravitation, and electrical experiments; minutes of the Albany Congress, 1754; a draft of his plan for uniting the Colonies; a military appointment certificate; an order to pay; and other political and military matters. One letter is in French.

This is a collection of drafts of letters written by Dutour to Abbé Jean Antoine Nollet. Dutour describes his various experiments on the influence of flame on electricity, as well as with luminous barometers. There is information relative to eighteenth-century scientific apparatus, as well as to contemporary scientists, such as Giambatista Beccaria, Francois de Cisternay Du fay, Dortous de Mairan, Petrus von Musschenbroek, and René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur.

Correspondence, lecture notes, and scientific writings of DeLuc and of his nephew, Jean André DeLuc (1763-1847), relating to his experiments in electricity, to lectures given in Geneva by the younger DeLuc, and to outstanding scientists of the period. Also notebooks of several geological expeditions in England, Wales, Belgium, Holland, Westphalia, and the Jura mountains (1778-1806). Correspondents of the elder DeLuc include Sir Joseph Banks, Varenne de Boest, Queen Charlotte and other members of the English royal household, William Hales, Abbé Haüy, Sir William Herschel, James Hutton, Joseph Lalande, de la Métherie, Georges Louis Le Sage, Pilâtre de Rozier, and James Watt.
