- The Trump administration’s family separation policy began in 2018 when the Justice Department under President Donald Trump revised its policies regarding the treatment of undocumented immigrants along the southern border of the United States. Under Trump’s new “zero-tolerance” policy, all undocumented immigrants would be detained and prosecuted. While this practice was conducted, the administration found that detaining families in one location was impractical, so it separated children from their parents.
