The conservation of fuel and power in buildings is an important part of the UK governmenta s strategy to reduce national energy conservation. The revision to Part L of the Building Regulations, which came into force on 1 April 2002, lays down detailed and extensive requirements for conserving energy in almost all buildings and it covers most potential causes of building energy consumption. This guide explains these detailed requirements and shows how they apply to particular cases, with the use of numerous worked examples. It includes a chapter on air tightness and leakage testing, a topic with which many building professionals are unfamiliar.

Part E of the Building Regulations for England and Wales has therefore introduced substantially improved standards for noise control and stringent new requirements for the testing of completed buildings. Much ecological research has dealt with processes within relatively homogenous landscape units or composite landscapes. Now, however, there is an appreciation that abiotic and biotic components must move through heterogenous landscapes and that the boundaries or ecotones also provide important needs in the life cycles of many organisms. They are also generally characterized by high biological diversity. Because landscape boundaries are the site of intense biotic and abiotic interactions they may be particularly sensitive indicators of change in the global environment. This book surveys the characteristics of ecotones, describes how ecotones respond to environmental change, and suggests ways in which ecotones can be managed most appropiately. This book should be of interest to graduate courses in landscape ecology and natural resource management.
