- Summary
-
Part biography, part political thriller, part scholarly detective story that draws on letters, diary entries, notes smuggled out of a Berlin prison, and other documents, this true story chronicles the life and brutal death of Mildred Harnack, the American leader of one of the largest underground resistance groups in Germany
Mildred Harnack was twenty-six when she enrolled in a PhD program in Germany and witnessed the meteoric rise of the Nazi party. In 1932, she began holding secret meetings with a small band of political activists that by 1940 had grown into the largest underground resistance group in Berlin. When the first shots of the Second World War were fired she became a spy, couriering top-secret intelligence to the Allies. On the eve of her escape to Sweden, she was ambushed by the Gestapo. At a Nazi military court she was sentenced to six years at a prison camp, but Hitler overruled the decision and ordered her execution. On February 16, 1943, she was strapped to a guillotine and beheaded. Harnack's great-great-niece Rebecca Donner draws on archival research in Germany, Russia, England, and the U.S. as well as newly uncovered documents in her family archive to reconstruct the moral courage of an enigmatic woman nearly erased by history. -- adapted from jacket

11. Brutish necessity : a Black life forgotten [2021]
- Berry, Jon, 1953- author.
- Alresford, Hampshire, UK ; Washington, USA : Chronos Books, 2021
- Description
- Book — xiv, 156 pages : maps ; 22 cm
- Summary
-
Oswald Augustus Grey was a Jamaican immigrant. He was 20 years old when he was executed and 19 when the crime for which he was convicted took place. To talk to people who lived in the city at the time, or to scour the nostalgia forums that proliferate online, is to discover an episode that has almost entirely disappeared in terms of public remembrance. This book unearths something of a place and a society that allowed a young life to become expendable and forgotten. The Birmingham in which this happened is both alien yet familiar.

- Yorkshire : Pen & Sword Military, an imprint of Pen & Sword Books Ltd., 2019.
- Description
- Book — ix, 246 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations, maps, genealogical table ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
Why did the Germans brutally and illegally execute a group of British soldiers who had been trapped behind the lines during the retreat to the Marne in 1914? Hedley Malloch, in this gripping and meticulously researched account, vividly describes the fate the soldiers on the run, and of the French civilians who sheltered them. He tells a dramatic and tragic story of escape, betrayals and punishment that also gives a fascinating insight into the life stories of the soldiers and civilians involved and the mind-set of the German army on the Western Front. The book names the German officers responsible for this atrocity, and explores their motivations.

"The seventh installment of Oliver Potzsch's bestselling Hangman's Daughter series"-- Provided by publisher.
1672. Hangman Jakob Kuisl and his family travel to Munich for a meeting of the prestigious-- for hangmen, at least-- Council of Twelve, the leaders of the empire's hangmen's guild. When young women begin turning up dead, the authorities assume they are a rash of suicides. But Kusil notices that each woman possesses a matching amulet, and suspects someone is murdering these women. With no suspects, the superstitious townsfolk of Munich blame the hangmen's guild, certain that they have called the devil upon the city. If Kuisl fails to solve the mystery of who is murdering these girls, it will affect all the hangmen in Germany.

A Sunday Times Crime Book of the Month 'Serial killers turn up all the time in crime fiction, but few are as patient or as devious as the murderer in Zhou Haohui's Death Notice. This extraordinary novel is the first in a trilogy, and it is already China's bestselling crime series to date' Sunday Times. For nearly two decades, an unsolved murder case has haunted Sergeant Zheng Haoming of the Chengdu Police Department. Eighteen years ago, two victims were murdered after being served with 'death notices'. In refined calligraphy their perceived crimes were itemised and they were sentenced to death. The date of execution was declared, as was the name of their executioner: Eumenides. Now, a user on an internet forum has asked the public to submit names for judgement - judgement for those the law cannot touch. Those found guilty will be punished and there is only one sentence: death. The user's handle? Eumenides. Does Zheng have a lead? Has a long-dormant serial killer resurfaced? Perhaps modern police techniques - criminal profiling, online surveillance and SWAT quick response teams - can catch a killer who previously evaded justice? Or perhaps the killer is more than a match for whatever the Chengdu Police Department can muster? The first in a trilogy and a bestseller in China, Death Notice is a hi-octane, hi-concept, cat-and-mouse thriller that adds an exhilarating new gear to the police procedural.

41. Eichmann's executioner : a novel [2017]
- Nagars Nacht. English
- Dehe, Astrid, author.
- New York : The New Press, 2017.
- Description
- Book — 218 pages ; 20 cm
- Summary
-
"A gripping and beautifully imagined work of literary fiction that explores history, memory, and the traumatic legacy of the Holocaust, in the English-language debut of a highly acclaimed German writing duo In May 1962, twenty-two men gathered in Jerusalem to decide by lot who would be Eichmann's executioner. These men had guarded the former Nazi SS lieutenant colonel during his imprisonment and trial, and in the absence of trained executioners in Israel it would fall to one of them to end Eichmann's life. Shalom Nagar, the only one among them who had asked not to participate, drew the short straw. In a novel that picks up decades later, Nagar is living on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, haunted by his memory of Eichmann. He remembers watching him day and night, the way he eats, the way he lies in bed, the sound of the cord tensing around Eichmann's neck. But as he tells and re-tells his story to anyone who will listen, he begins to doubt himself, and when one of his friends, Moshe, reveals his own link to Eichmann, Nagar is forced to reconsider everything he has ever believed about his past. In the postwar tradition of trauma literature including Gunter Grass's The Tin Drum and Bernhard Schlink's The Reader, the highly acclaimed writing team Astrid Dehe and Achim Engstler raise provocative and universal questions of how we represent the past, whether we should, and how these representations impinge upon the present"-- Provided by publisher.

- Book — xix, 236 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
In the last four decades of the Georgian era 131 women went to the gallows. What were their crimes? And why, unlike most convicted felons, were they not reprieved? Women and the Gallows 1797 - 1837 brings new insights into their lives and the events that led them to their deaths, and includes chapters on baby murder among domestic servants, counterfeiting, husband poisoning, as well as the infamous Eliza Fenning case. Plus, for the first time, all the stories of the women have been compiled in a unique chronology. Praise for The Disappearance of Maria Glenn by Naomi Clifford 'Comparisons with the inestimable Kate Summerscale are inevitable. Naomi Clifford is her equal in terms of her riveting prose and her superior as a serious social historian.' 'A true life story of Maria Glenn is written with superb attention to detail and beautifully crafted.'.

53. Billy Budd, sailor (an inside narrative) [2016]
- Melville, Herman, 1819-1891 author.
- Peterborough, Ontario, Canada : Broadview Press, [2016]
- Description
- Book — 227 pages : illustrations ; 22 cm.
- Summary
-
"Is it the intention of law-makers that good men shall be hung ever?" asked Henry David Thoreau. The question has never been academic, but in 1924, when Herman Melville's Billy Budd, Sailor was published posthumously, we understood better than ever why. An uneasy if beautiful account of the human cost of realpolitik, Billy Budd, Sailor asks how far we should go to protext the status quo. When does the reaction to a security crisis become reactionary? In the novella John Claggart, master-at-arms of a British warship, alleges a sailor is talking mutiny. The sailor, Billy, isn't just innocent of the charge; he's a true innocent. Yet when confronted by his accuser, Billy reacts impulsively, striking Claggart. The resulting trial shows the horrors that can follow from a civilized society following its own laws. This Broadview Edition is based on the authoritative Hayford-Sealts copy-text of Billy Budd. The introduction distils the long and complex critical conversation about the work since its publication, and the historical appendices feature materials on mutiny, capital and corporal punishment, philosophical pessimism, sexuality, and the rule of law.

- Book — vii, 220 pages ; 23 cm
- Summary
-
In the state of Georgia, 1025 men and women are known to have been hanged or electrocuted for capital crimes in the century after the Civil War. Based on more than twenty years of investigative research, this complete chronological record of these legal executions was pieced together from diverse sources in and outside of the state, with many details never before been made public. The author documents the facts as they occurred without delving into the politics of capital punishment.

- Summary

75. Hangmen [2015]
- McDonagh, Martin author.
- London : Faber & Faber, 2015.
- Description
- Book — 107 pages ; 20 cm
- Summary
-
I'm just as good as bloody Pierrepoint. In his small pub in Oldham, Harry is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and sycophantic pub regulars, dying to hear Harry's reaction to the news, a peculiar stranger lurks, with a very different motive for his visit. Don't worry. I may have my quirks but I'm not an animal. Or am I? One for the courts to discuss. Martin McDonagh's Hangmen premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in September 2015.

- Summary
-
In the century following the Civil War, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia legally executed thousands of men and women convicted of capital crimes. Based on exhaustive research of court records, newspapers death certificates and even gravestones, this volume covers each of these cases in comprehensive detail. Arranged by state, entries for each execution are listed in chronological order, giving the name, race and age of the prisoner and a description of the crime of which he or she was convicted. The motive, if known, the date and place of the execution, and relevant sources are also included. Appendices provide preliminary lists of executions in these states before 1866, including some cases dating back to 1608. Uncovering a number of previously unacknowledged executions, this work reveals that America's experience with capital punishment remains more extensive than previously known.

- Description
- Book — 1 online resource
- Summary
-
In the state of Georgia, 1025 men and women are known to have been hanged or electrocuted for capital crimes in the century after the Civil War. Based on more than twenty years of investigative research, this complete chronological record of these legal executions was pieced together from diverse sources in and outside of the state, with many details never before been made public. The author documents the facts as they occurred without delving into the politics of capital punishment.

In early 2013, Robert Gleason became the latest victim of the electric chair, a peculiarly American execution method. Shouting Pog mo thin ("Kiss my ass" in Gaelic) he grinned electricity shot through his system. When the current was switched off his body slumped against the leather restraints, and Gleeson, who had strangled two fellow inmates to ensure his execution was not postponed, was dead. The execution had gone flawlessly--not a guaranteed result with the electric chair, which has gone horrifically wrong on many occasions. Old Sparky covers the history of capital punishment in America and the "current wars" between Edison and Westinghouse which led to the development of the electric chair. It examines how the electric chair became the most popular method of execution in America, before being superseded by lethal injection. Famous executions are explored, alongside quirky last meals and poignant last words. The death penalty remains a hot topic of debate in America, and Old Sparky does not shy away from that controversy. Executions have gone spectacularly wrong, with convicts being set alight, and needing up to five jolts of electricity before dying. There have been terrible miscarriages of justice, and the death penalty has not been applied even-handedly. Historically, African-Americans, the mentally challenged, and poor defendants have been likely to get the chair, an anomaly which led the Supreme Court to briefly suspend the death penalty. Since the resumption of capital punishment in 1976 Texas alone has executed more than 500 prisoners, and death row is full.

85. Black Sunday [1960]
- [San Francisco, California, USA] : Kanopy Streaming, 2014.
- Description
- Video — 1 online resource (1 video file, approximately 87 min.) : digital, .flv file, sound Sound: digital. Digital: video file; MPEG-4; Flash.
- Summary
-
In one of the most auspicious directorial debuts in movie history, Mario Bava bridged the gap between the gothic horror picture and the European art film with Black Sunday (aka La maschera del demonio or The Mask of Satan). Made in 1960 and now considered a cult classic, it continues to reverberate through the cinema, inspiring and influencing new generations of filmmakers. In an absolutely mesmerizing performance, Black Sunday stars Barbara Steele as Asa Vajda, a beautiful woman tortured and executed as a witch, but not before pronouncing a curse upon those who have condemned her, a curse that is fulfilled some 200 years later. This newly mastered HD edition is the original Italian cut of the film, complete with Roberto Nicolosi's expressive score and three minutes of footage deleted from the U.S. release version.

- Summary
-
Soldiers found guilty of desertion or cowardice during the Great War faced death by firing squad. In this revealing look at military law in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, historian Teresa Iacobelli examines the cases of 25 Canadian soldiers who were executed by their own military as well as the untold stories of the 197 men who were sentenced to death but spared. Death or Deliverance -- the first book to consider commuted sentences alongside cases that ended in tragic executions -- offers a nuanced account of military law in the Great War. Novels, histories, movies, and television series often depict courts martial as brutal and inflexible, and social memories of this system of frontline justice have inspired modern movements to seek pardons for soldiers executed on the battlefield. Beyond well-known stories of unyielding and callous generals, however, lies another story, one of a disciplinary system capable of thoughtful review and compassion for the individual soldier. Published to coincide with the centennial anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, this book reconsiders an important and unexamined chapter in the history of both a war and a nation. Published in association with the Canadian War Museum.
