"Bourreaux nazis ou simples soldats, plusieurs prisonniers allemands ont été exécutés pour des raisons diverses entre 1944 et 1945 par "quelques balles bien ajustées..." A study of the depictions of women's executions in Renaissance England A Weak Woman in a Strong Battle: Women and Public Execution in Early Modern England provides critical insights on representations of women on the scaffold, focusing on how female victims and those writing about them constructed meaning from the ritual. Jennifer Lodine-Chaffey draws on a wide range of genres, from accounts of martyrdom to dramatic works, to explore not only the words of women executed in Tudor and Stuart England, but also the ways that writers represented female bodies as markers of penitence or deviance. A significant part of the execution spectacle-one used to assess the victim's proper acceptance of death and godly repentance-was the final speech offered at the foot of the gallows or before the pyre. To ensure their final words held value for audiences, women adopted conventionally gendered language and positioned themselves as subservient and modest. The reception of women's speeches, Lodine-Chaffey argues, depended on their performances of accepted female behaviors and language as well as physical signs of interior regeneration. Indeed, when women presented themselves or were represented as behaving in stereotypically feminine and virtuous ways, they were able to offer limited critiques of their fraught positions in society. Just as important as their words, though, were the depictions of women's bodies. The executed woman's body, Lodine-Chaffey contends, functioned as a text, scrutinized by witnesses and readers for markers of innocence or guilt. The intense focus on the words and bodies of women facing execution during this period, Lodine-Chaffey argues, became a catalyst for a more thorough interest in and understanding of women's roles not just as criminals but as subjects.

Mildred Harnack was twenty-six when she enrolled in a PhD program in Germany and witnessed the meteoric rise of the Nazi party. In 1932, she began holding secret meetings with a small band of political activists that by 1940 had grown into the largest underground resistance group in Berlin. When the first shots of the Second World War were fired she became a spy, couriering top-secret intelligence to the Allies. On the eve of her escape to Sweden, she was ambushed by the Gestapo. At a Nazi military court she was sentenced to six years at a prison camp, but Hitler overruled the decision and ordered her execution. On February 16, 1943, she was strapped to a guillotine and beheaded. "René-Louis Brunet était chaudronnier. Originaire de La Ferté-Saint-Aubin (Loiret), il habitait Orléans en 1914. Émile Buat était ouvrier agricole et vivait à Arzillières (Marne), près de Vitry-le-François. Les deux hommes sont mobilisés dans un bataillon de chasseurs à pied (BCP), une unité d'élite, et subissent les conditions effroyables de la vie des Poilus de la Grande Guerre. Au printemps 1917, après l'échec de l'offensive Nivelle au Chemin des Dames, les mutineries éclatent. Lors de réunions de soldats, Brunet et Buat incitent leurs camarades à désobéir aux ordres et à refuser de combattre. Focusing on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it looks at the consequences of the 1752 Murder Act. These criminal bodies had a crucial role in the history of medicine, and the history of crime, and great symbolic resonance in literature and popular culture. Starting with a consideration of the criminal corpse in the medieval and early modern periods, chapters go on to review the histories of criminal justice, of medical history and of gibbeting under the Murder Act, and ends with some discussion of the afterlives of the corpse, in literature, folklore and in contemporary medical ethics. The use of corpses in medicine and magic has been recorded back into antiquity. The lacerated bodies of Roman gladiators were used as a source of curative blood, for instance. In early modern Europe, a great trade opened up in ancient Egyptian mummies and the fat of executed criminals, plundered as medicinal cure-alls. However, this is the first book to consider the demand for the blood of the executed, the desire for human fat, the resort to the hanged man's hand, and the trade in hanging rope in the modern era. It ends by look at the spiritual afterlife of dead criminals.

This book analyses the different types of post-execution punishments and other aggravated execution practices, the reasons why they were advocated, and the decision, enshrined in the Murder Act of 1752, to make two post-execution punishments, dissection and gibbeting, an integral part of sentences for murder. It traces the origins of the Act, and then explores the ways in which Act was actually put into practice. After identifying the dominance of penal dissection throughout the period, it looks at the abandonment of burning at the stake in the 1790s, the rapid decline of hanging in chains just after 1800, and the final abandonment of both dissection and gibbeting in 1832 and 1834. It concludes that the Act, by creating differentiation in levels of penalty, played an important role within the broader capital punishment system well into the nineteenth century. While eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century historians have extensively studied the `Bloody Code' and the resulting interactions around the `Hanging Tree', they have largely ignored an important dimension of the capital punishment system - the courts extensive use of aggravated and post-execution punishments. With this book, Peter King aims to rectify this neglected historical phenomenon.

La fiche matricule nous livrera la terrible et insoutenable nouvelle : "fusillé le 24 décembre 1914 à Reninghelst en Belgique". L'étude de son dossier de jugement nous permettra d'ajouter avec certitude : "fusillé pour l'exemple". Une exécution la veille de Noël, alors que sa fille n'avait que 4 ans. Un acte de cruauté qui s'ajoute à l'horreur de ces premiers mois du conflit où les pertes humaines dépassaient l'entendement. Fusiller au hasard pour terroriser la troupe, voilà la stratégie de l'État major tentant ainsi de galvaniser par la terreur des milliers de soldats poussés en première ligne comme on monte à l'échafaud pour essayer en vain d'endiguer l'avancée des troupes allemandes. Ce fut une véritable boucherie humaine à laquelle certains comme Dédébat, non violent et animé semble-t-il d'un esprit pacifiste, ont refusé de souscrire. Il est des sujets comme celui-ci qui restent encore tabous. Alors que les réhabilitations de ces pauvres innocents ne se sont faites qu'au compte-gouttes, le maire de Saint-Lys en 1921 n'a pas hésité, bravant la loi, à réhabiliter Frédéric Julien Dédébat, en inscrivant le nom de ce "fusillé" sur le monument aux morts. Patrick Lasseube a mené l'enquête avec minutie, n'hésitant à aller sur les lieux même de l'arrestation et de l'exécution de Frédéric Julien Dédébat. Le martyr dans cet ouvrage, c'est Jean-Julien Chapelant, originaire d'Ampuis (69), exécuté le ii octobre 1914 au hameau des Loges à Beuvraignes près de Roye (80). L'auteur vous fait revivre les derniers moments de ce jeune lieutenant, le chaos de la France en septembre 1914, la retraite de milliers de fantassins humiliés par l'artillerie allemande dans l'Aisne et l'Oise... Après l'éphémère succès des français sur la Marne, les fleurons des régiments d'infanterie ont connu la déroute dans la Somme. L'Etat-Major dépassé cherchera des boucs émissaires comme Chapelant. A l'aube de son conseil de guerre spécial, les paroles du lieutenant-colonel Didier, réitérant ses menaces aux juges, sont claires : "Vous entendez Gaube, il faut me le fusiller". Les mitrailleuses de Chapelant ont enrayé l'offensive des Poméraniens sur Paris et ont cloué au sol 450 Allemands, pourquoi le cacher ? "En novembre 2013 une commission mandatée par le Ministre délégué en charge des anciens combattants a rendu son rapport. Sa mission : faire un état des lieux complet des soldats de la Première Guerre Mondiale fusillés pour l'exemple. Après les discours de Lionel Jospin (1998) de Nicolas Sarkozy (2008) et la campagne présidentielle de François Hollande (2012) les associations mobilisées dans ce combat ont espéré beaucoup de ce rapport. Le soutien affiché par des partis politiques, par des élus, et par un sondage donnant 75% des Français favorables à la réhabilitation permettait de penser que cette page noire de notre Histoire pourrait enfin être tournée. Or les propositions faites par cette commission ne semblent pas satisfaire le monde associatif militant, et les familles de fusillés pour l'exemple. Que s'est-il passé pour que les avancées ne soient pas à la hauteur de leurs attentes ? Qui étaient les membres de la commission Prost ? Qu'elles associations furent auditionnées par la commission, et surtout qui représentaient-elles ? Cet ouvrage démontre que la grande majorité d'entre elles sont des associations militaires ! Alors, la commission fut-elle verrouillée par l'armée ? A-t-elle réellement pris en compte les conditions dans lesquelles les conseils.de guerre rendirent leur terrible verdict ? Les injustices sont flagrantes dans la plupart des cas et la notion d'exemple apparait nettement. Les conseils de guerre ont rendu une justice inique basée sur code militaire obsolète, datant de 1857. Les conclusions de la commission ne satisfont pas les militants de la réhabilitation. In early 2013, Robert Gleason became the latest victim of the electric chair, a peculiarly American execution method. Shouting Pog mo thin ("Kiss my ass" in Gaelic) he grinned electricity shot through his system. When the current was switched off his body slumped against the leather restraints, and Gleeson, who had strangled two fellow inmates to ensure his execution was not postponed, was dead. The execution had gone flawlessly--not a guaranteed result with the electric chair, which has gone horrifically wrong on many occasions. Old Sparky covers the history of capital punishment in America and the "current wars" between Edison and Westinghouse which led to the development of the electric chair. It examines how the electric chair became the most popular method of execution in America, before being superseded by lethal injection. Since the resumption of capital punishment in 1976 Texas alone has executed more than 500 prisoners, and death row is full.
