Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, large numbers of people from mainland China emigrated to the United States and other countries seeking employment. Termed "overseas Chinese, " they made lasting contributions to the development of early communities, an impact which has only begun to be recognized in recent years. "Chinatowns, " rural mining claims, work camps for railroad and other construction activities, salmon canneries and shrimp camps, laundries, stores, cook shacks, cemeteries, and temples are only some of the sites where traces of their presence can be found. In recent years, numerous archaeological and historical investigations of the overseas Chinese have taken place, and "Hidden Heritage" presents the results of some of those studies.

The Chinese are New Zealand's largest non-European and non-Polynesian ethnic group, with a history in this country dating back to the mid-1850s. Through 12 essays, this study traces the history of a group who have been the victims of racial stereotyping, from the 19th century goldrush to the present day. A variety of contributors offer different perspectives, including historical, legal and archeological. The development of the Chinese community, the formation of their identity as a visible minority, their settlement and adaption issues, and their transnational behaviour are all explored here. As its subject is the most conspicuous group of "essential outsiders", owing to their number as well as their perceived economic privilege, this study also provides an in-depth examination of New Zealand's race relations and national identity.

This book sets out to provoke a radical rethinking of some of the deep-seated and subconscious attitudes towards 'Asians' and Asia held by many New Zealanders, as reflected in cartoons of the past 140 years. Cartoons are powerful visual images which have an immediacy greater than that of words. Many New Zealanders are now grappling with understanding the issues behind 'bad Asian drivers', 'rising property prices', 'student criminals'. These issues go back 150 years to the arrival of the first Chinese, towards the end of the Gold Rushes. Our attitude to Asians as the essential outsider has undergone little change since then. New Asian immigrants cannot understand our prejudice, or where it comes from. Using political cartoons, this book examines New Zealanders' attitudes to Asians from the 1850s until the present day. The cartoons are arranged thematically and chronologically, accompanied by explanatory text. Each chapter has an introductory preface, with a major preface.

This book uses extensive interviews with seven different families to explore historical and contemporary relations between Maori and Chinese, a subject which has never been given serious study before. A full chapter is given to each family which is explored in depth often in the voices of the protagonists themselves. This detailed and personal approach shows how in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Maori and Chinese, both relegated to the fringes of society, often had warm and congenial bonds, with intermarriage and large Maori-Chinese families.However in recent times the relationship between these two rapidly growing groups has shown tension as Maori have gained confidence in their identity and as increased Asian immigration has become a political issue. This book provides a unique and fascinating insight into cross-cultural alliances between Asian and indigenous peoples, revealing a resilience which has endured persecution, ridicule and neglect and offering a picture of NZ society which challenges the usual Pakeha-dominated perspective. How have two very different marginalised groups in New Zealand society - Maori and Chinese - interacted over the last 150 years? This important book, the result of a major grant from the Marsden Fund, looks at the relationship between the tangata whenua and the country's earliest and largest non-European immigrant group for the first time. Do Maori resent Chinese immigrants? Do Chinese New Zealanders understand the role of the tangata whenua? Have Maori and Chinese formed alliances based on common values and history? Contributors tackle such question from many angles. In no previous generation have so many educated Chinese women with young children immigrated to western countries. Whereas most of the existing research literature in this field tends to study Chinese immigrants in general, this book focuses on a group of skilled female migrant mothers in New Zealand. It aims at understanding the dilemmas and ambiguities particularly concerning skilled female migration: although they belonged to a privileged group in their native land, these women become members of a visible minority in the new country. Middle-class professionals in their birth country, they experience downward social mobility when taking on unskilled jobs in their adopted land; besides having to shoulder heavier domestic workloads as the traditional support for childcare is no longer available in New Zealand. Centering on their mothering practices, this book provides detailed descriptions of how mothers deploy various strategies to maximise the benefits for their children's education amidst changes and readjustments after migration.

"Mixed race" is becoming an important area for research, and there is a growing body of work in the North American and British contexts. However, understandings and experiences of "mixed race" across different countries and regions are not often explored in significant depth. New Zealand and Singapore provide important contexts for investigation, as two multicultural, yet structurally divergent, societies. Within these two countries, "mixed race" describes a particularly interesting label for individuals of mixed Chinese and European parentage. This book explores the concept of "mixed race" for people of mixed Chinese and European descent, looking at how being Chinese and/or European can mean many different things in different contexts. By looking at different communities in Singapore and New Zealand, it investigates how individuals of mixed heritage fit into or are excluded from these communities. Increasingly, individuals of mixed ancestry are opting to identify outside of traditionally defined racial categories, posing a challenge to systems of racial classification, and to sociological understandings of "race". As case studies, Singapore and New Zealand provide key examples of the complex relationship between state categorization and individual identities. The book explores the divergences between identity and classification, and the ways in which identity labels affect experiences of "mixed race" in everyday life. Personal stories reveal the creative and flexible ways in which people cross boundaries, and the everyday negotiations between classification, heritage, experience, and nation in defining identity. The study is based on qualitative research, including in-depth interviews with people of mixed heritage in both countries. Filling an important gap in the literature by using an Asia/Pacific dimension, this study of race and ethnicity will appeal to students and scholars of mixed race studies, ethnicity, Chinese diaspora and cultural anthropology.
