2. Borders and belonging : a memoir [2021]
- Sucharov, Mira, author.
- Cham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan, an imprint of Springer Nature, [2021]
- Description
- Book — xiv, 183 pages ; 22 cm
- Summary
-
In this gripping and honest memoir, Mira Sucharov shows what a search for political and emotional home looks like. Sucharov suffered from childhood phobias triggered by her parents' divorce, and she sought emotional refuge in Jewish summer camp. But three years spent living in Israel in her twenties shook her to her core. Ultimately, encounters with colleagues, students, friends and lovers force her to confront what it means to be able to write, advocate and teach about Israel/Palestine in a way that balances affirmation with authenticity.

"On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand's godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man's life. When a strange key is found in Stephen's possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d'Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand's godfather has kept for decades. A gruesome discovery in Stephen's Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized. Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family. For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide"--Provided by publisher.

- Armstrong, Kelley, author.
- First edition - New York : Minotaur Books, 2020
- Description
- Book — 356 pages ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
"In #1 New York Times bestseller Kelley Armstrong's latest thriller, the hidden town of Rockton is about to face a challenge none of them saw coming: a baby. Every season in Rockton seems to bring a new challenge. At least that's what Detective Casey Duncan has felt since she decided to call this place home. Between all the secretive residents, the sometimes-hostile settlers outside, and the surrounding wilderness, there's always something to worry about. While on a much needed camping vacation with her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, Casey hears a baby crying in the woods. The sound leads them to a tragic scene: a woman buried under the snow, murdered, a baby still alive in her arms. A town that doesn't let anyone in under the age of eighteen, Rockton must take care of its youngest resident yet while solving another murder and finding out where the baby came from - and whether she's better off where she is. #1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong again delivers an engaging, tense thriller set in perhaps the most interesting town in all of contemporary crime fiction"-- Provided by publisher

8. Anthem : Rush in the '70s [2020]
- Popoff, Martin, 1963- author.
- Toronto, Ontario, Canada : ECW Press, [2020]
- Description
- Book — 354 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations ; 23 cm
- Summary
-
"The definitive biography of the rock 'n' roll kings of the North. With extensive, first-hand reflections from Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart, as well as from family, friends, and fellow musicians, Anthem: Rush in the '70s is a detailed portrait of Canada's greatest rock ambassadors. The first of three volumes, Anthem puts the band's catalog, from their self-titled debut to 1978's Hemispheres (the next volume resumes with the release of Permanent Waves) into both Canadian and general pop culture context, and presents the trio of quintessentially dependable, courteous Canucks as generators of incendiary, groundbreaking rock 'n' roll. Fighting complacency, provoking thought, and often enraging critics, Rush has been at war with the music industry since 1974, when they were first dismissed as the Led Zeppelin of the north. Anthem, like each volume in this series, celebrates the perseverance of Geddy, Alex, and Neil: three men who maintained their values while operating from a Canadian base, throughout lean years, personal tragedies, and the band's eventual worldwide success."--Provided by publisher

- Cooper, Christopher A., 1984- author.
- Vancouver ; Toronto : UBC Press, [2020]
- Description
- Book — xii, 133 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"Unlike most public servants, top administrators - those who manage thousands of personnel and oversee millions of dollars in public spending - are appointed by the head of government. At the Pleasure of the Crown is a detailed exploration of this central but overlooked aspect of governing. Christopher A. Cooper analyzes the appointment of deputy ministers in Canada's provincial bureaucracies over the last century, as governments have looked first for partisan loyalty, then candid advice, and ultimately feverish devotion to the policy agenda. Throughout, turnover among bureaucratic elites has remained highly political, with important consequences for the integrity of Canadian public institutions."-- Provided by publisher.

- Robertson, David, 1977- author.
- First edition. - Toronto, Ontario, Canada : HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, [2020]
- Description
- Book — xi, 274 pages : illustrations, map ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
"David A. Robertson, the son of a Cree father and a white, settler mother, grew up with virtually no knowledge or understanding of his family's Indigenous roots. His father, Dulas, or Don as he became known, had grown up on the trapline in the bush only to be transplanted permanently to a house on reserve in Manitoba, where he was not permitted to speak his language--Swampy Cree--and was forced to learn and speak only English while in day school, unless in secret in the forest with his friends. Robertson's mother, Beverly Eyers, grew up in a small town in Manitoba, a town with no Indigenous families, until Don came to town as a United Church minister and fell in love with her. Robertson's parents made the decision to raise their children, in his words, "separate from his Indigenous identity." He grew up without his father's teachings or knowledge of his life or experiences. All he had left was blood memory, the pieces of who he was engrained in the fabric of his DNA. Pieces that he has spent a lifetime putting together. Black Water is a family memoir of intergenerational trauma and healing, of connection, of story, of how David Robertson's father's life--growing up in Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba, then making the journey from Norway House to Winnipeg--informed the author's own life, and might even have saved it. Facing a story nearly erased by the designs of history, father and son journey together back to the trapline at Black Water, through the past to create a new future."-- Provided by publisher.

- Betz, Ingrid, author.
- Toronto, Canada : Inanna Publications & Education Inc., 2020.
- Description
- Book — 264 pages ; 21 cm.
- Summary
-
"Verena Vitek shot and killed a man when she was fifteen. A youthful refugee from the conflict in Serbia, Verena dreams of the day when she can legitimately kill again. Her chance comes when she joins an animal-rights activists cell headed by John Borrowman, a London, Ontario, zoologist. He's haunted by a recent trip to China in which he witnessed the barbaric practice of milking Moon bears for their bile, an ingredient in a growing variety of commercial products. They make an odd pair. To stop the Chinese from establishing the barbaric practice of milking bears for their bile in Algonquin Park, John Borrowman finds himself having to rely on Verena--emotionally damaged, dysfunctional, but a crack shot with her AR-7 rifle. The bears may be saved, but death and ruined lives are the human price to be paid."-- Provided by publisher.

- Description
- Book — x, 332 pages : maps, plans 24 cm
- Summary
-
"Canada is a bounded land - a nation situated between rock and cold to the north and a border to the south. Cole Harris traces how society was reorganized - for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike - when Europeans resettled this distinctive land. Through a series of vignettes that focus on people's experiences on the ground, he exposes the underlying architecture of colonialism, from first contacts, to the immigrant experience in early Canada, to the dispossession of First Nations. In the process, he unearths fresh insights on the influence of Indigenous Peoples and argues that Canada's boundedness is ultimately drawing it towards its Indigenous roots."-- Provided by publisher.
