Tajikistan is the poorest and only Persian-speaking country among the post-Soviet independent states. Historically, the Tajiks of Central Asia and Afghanistan along with the Persians of modern Iran came from a related ethnic group. When the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established in late 1924, it became the first modern Tajik state that remained one of the 15 union republics of the Soviet Union until 1991. Almost immediately after the collapse of the USSR, Tajikistan became a scene of brutal civil war, taking place in one of the global hubs of religiously motivated political struggle, militancy, mass cross-border refugee flows, insurgency, and drug trafficking. During the first decade of the 21st century, the country was making modest progress toward stability. However, the heavy burden of socio-economic problems, in addition to continuing conflict in the neighboring Afghanistan-Pakistan, presented even bigger challenges for Tajikistan. In addition, Western economic sanctions against Russia in 2014, coinciding with continuing lower oil prices, have negatively affected one million of Tajik labor migrants in Russia. Yet Tajikistan has become neither weaker nor less important as a player in world politics. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Tajikistan contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 800 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. Asia is a crucial battleground for power and influence in the international system. It is also a theater of new experiments in regional cooperation that could redefine global order. Whose Ideas Matter? is the first book to explore the diffusion of ideas and norms in the international system from the perspective of local actors, with Asian regional institutions as its main focus. There's no Asian equivalent of the EU or of NATO. Why has Asia, and in particular Southeast Asia, avoided such multilateral institutions? Most accounts focus on U.S. interests and perceptions or intraregional rivalries to explain the design and effectiveness of regional institutions in Asia such as SEATO, ASEAN, and the ASEAN Regional Forum. Amitav Acharya instead foregrounds the ideas of Asian policymakers, including their response to the global norms of sovereignty and nonintervention. Asian regional institutions are shaped by contestations and compromises involving emerging global norms and the preexisting beliefs and practices of local actors. Acharya terms this perspective "constitutive localization" and argues that international politics is not all about Western ideas and norms forcing their way into non-Western societies while the latter remain passive recipients. Rather, ideas are conditioned and accepted by local agents who shape the diffusion of ideas and norms in the international system. Acharya sketches a normative trajectory of Asian regionalism that constitutes an important contribution to the global sovereignty regime and explains a remarkable continuity in the design and functions of Asian regional institutions.

The stories of the remarkable men and women who built a bridge across a cultural divide and introduced Meditation and Eastern Philosophy to the West This is an account of the meeting of two very different cultures by which the ideas of the East became integrated into the everyday lives of millions in the West. It begins with a group of Armenians led by G I Gurdjieff at the beginning of the 20th century who set out in search of truth, recognising that something was missing from the Western world view. Returning to the West after a ten year quest he began to teach. In Russia he met P D Ouspensky, who had also spent years searching for sacred knowledge, and passed on to him much of what he had learned. Ouspensky recognised the wisdom and power of what Gurdjieff had rediscovered, but also came to realize that they only had 'fragments of an unknown teaching' and urged his successor to find 'the source'. With the arrival of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the West in 1960, many were introduced to a form of meditation, specially designed to suit people with commitments to family, work and society. While the Maharishi went on to popularise meditation, the seekers never lost sight of the need to establish a link with 'the source'. A few years later, during a visit to India with the Maharishi, Ouspensky's successor was introduced to Sri Shantananda Saraswati, Shankaracharya of the North, an exponent of the ancient teaching of Advaita or non-dualism. Here, Dr. Roles recognised, was 'the source' they had been seeking. Over the next thirty years the Shankaracharya continued to advise, answer questions about the teaching, and encourage the practice of meditation which had been devised by his predecessor to help humanity after the ravages of the Second World War. Through these meetings and conversations, knowledge and spiritual practices that had been known only to a few were transmitted to the West. The book is partly autobiographical in that it relates the author's own experience with a number of the teachers and organisations that have taught meditation, Eastern Philosophy, and the 'Work'.

When modern primary schools were first founded in Japan and Egypt in the 1870s, they did not teach art. Yet by the middle of the twentieth century, art education was a permanent part of Japanese and Egyptian primary schooling. In 1936, eight-year-old William Adams made his first visit to the Southwest and the Puebloan ruins of Frijoles Canyon - better known as Bandelier National Monument. Amidst the red rock canyons and mesas his lifelong passion for the Southwest was born. When his family moved to Window Rock, Arizona, his fascination with the Southwest fused with a desire to make a career of studying American Indians and led him down the path to becoming a well-known and respected anthropologist. From his years growing up on the Navajo Reservation and later working there as a livestock drive foreman and trader, to conducting archaeological excavations in areas along the Nile in the Sudan and Egypt that were to be flooded by the Aswan High Dam, to holding visiting lectureships in China, Kazakhstan, Germany, and England, Adams' memoir tells the story of an active and adventurous life while reflecting on the lessons that come from living on four continents and working among many different cultures and languages.

Ancient Irrigation Systems in the Aral Sea Area is the English translation of Boris Vasilevich Andrianov's work, Drevnie orositelnye sistemy priaralya, concerning the study of ancient irrigation systems and the settlement pattern in the historical region of Khorezm, south of the Aral Sea (Uzbekistan). This work holds a special place within the Soviet archaeological school because of the results obtained through a multidisciplinary approach combining aerial survey and fieldwork, surveys, and excavations. This translation has been enriched by the addition of introductions written by several eminent scholars from the region regarding the importance of the Khorezm Archaeological-Ethnographic Expedition and the figure of Boris V. Andrianov and his landmark study almost 50 years after the original publication.

How the state, education, society, and religion interlock and interact to create an environment in which jihadism thrives in Pakistan. What explains the continued growth of extremism in Pakistan? This question is of more than academic interest, given the ongoing militant actions in that country - as well as in Afghanistan, India and elsewhere - of extremist groups based in Pakistan. Madiha Afzal has dug into the question with in-depth field research, rigorous analysis of survey data and her own intuitive understanding of the country. The Roots of Jihadist Extremism in Pakistan examines Pakistanis' attitudes toward religion, religious minorities, and jihad, as well as the central narratives that define their views of the rest of the world. It then traces the role of education - the lack of access to it and the poor quality and biased curricula of both the mainstream education system and religious schools - in shaping how Pakistanis think, often in self-destructive ways. Afzal looks at other factors that explain attitudes toward extremism in Pakistan. These include the role of the government and politics, especially the state's relationship with Islamist parties and militant groups; social structures and the country's ever-present conspiracy theories; religion; the loud and unruly media environment; the geopolitics of South Asia; and Pakistan's unique and tortured birth. Pakistan certainly is not the only country where jihadist extremism has emerged and Afzal draws out the lessons from Pakistan's experience that contribute to an understanding of the roots of extremist attitudes and violent extremism globally.

The city of Qufu, in north China's Shandong Province, is famous as the hometown of Kong Qiu (551-479 BCE)-known as Confucius in English and as Kongzi or Kong Fuzi in Chinese. In The Kongs of Qufu, Christopher Agnew chronicles the history of the sage's direct descendants from the inception of the hereditary title Duke for Fulfilling the Sage in 1055 CE through its dissolution in 1935, after the fall of China's dynastic system in 1911. Drawing on archival materials, Agnew reveals how a kinship group used genealogical privilege to shape Chinese social and economic history. The Kongs' power under a hereditary dukedom enabled them to oversee agricultural labor, dominate rural markets, and profit from commercial enterprises. The Kongs of Qufu demonstrates that the ducal institution and Confucian ritual were both a means to reproduce existing social hierarchies and a potential site of conflict and subversion.
