This is the first English translation of Reyna Carranza's historical novel of dynastic decline in twentieth-century Argentina. "Of Love and Madness" is a tale of sin and retribution set in and around Cordoba, Argentina. The main action occurs in the mid-1960s, a period when provincial Argentina is finally turning away from its insular, agrarian past and embracing the modern world. The protagonist is a child of the new era who is impelled by an uncertain mix of personal and supernatural forces to sacrifice herself for the demise of the old.Among stories of dynastic decline, "Of Love and Madness" is distinguished by its focus upon the historically encumbered female and its unusual perspective on the struggle of Latin American cultures to escape their past. Woman is cast as a destroyer as well as creator, charged with burying the old world before building a new one in which she can have an appropriate place. This process of subversion and atonement is personal and to a large extent internal, and its cost is a risk of isolation even within the traditionally permitted female sphere. Woman's ability to survive and prevail hinges in part on a willingness to accommodate natural and spiritual imperatives rather than opposing them.

In this collection of writings by women both inside and outside of Argentina, Monica Szurmuk has unearthed a rich and delightful tradition of travel writing. The selections, recorded from the period 1850-1930, include travelogues by European and North American women who visited Argentina alongside pieces by Argentinean women who describe trips to the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and the interior of their own country. In addition to short introductions to each text and author, Szurmuk describes how women's texts were co-opted to form an image of white women as models of nationhood that need to be protected and sheltered. She also examines the history of travel writing alongside the participation of women in public life, population policies, and the development of the public school system, and she offers enlightening conclusions about the nature of travel writing as a literary genre.

On September 23, 1947, the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires filled with jubilant men and women celebrating a new law that gave women the same right as men to vote in all elections. President Juan Domingo Peron had achieved a major victory for his regime. In the years that followed, Peron, with the help of his wife, Evita, courted female voters and created opportunities for them to participate in his broad-based political coalition. However, the suffrage law generated considerable controversy, including from supporters of the movement. Harsh criticism came from the Left, especially from the Socialist Party, the earliest advocate of women's suffrage in Argentina. Also, feminists who had done so much to build the case in favor of voting vehemently opposed the reform, viewing the Peronist suffrage plan as a cynical attempt to boost Evita's political career. Providing an overview of the women's suffrage movement from its earliest stages through the passage of the 1947 law, this study examines what Argentina's history can tell us about the moment when a society agrees to the equal participation of women in the political realm.

Dona Petrona C. de Gandulfo (c. 1896-1992) reigned as Argentina's preeminent domestic and culinary expert from the 1930s through the 1980s. An enduring culinary icon thanks to her magazine columns, radio programs, and television shows, she was likely second only to Eva Peron in terms of the fame she enjoyed and the adulation she received. Her cookbook garnered tremendous popularity, becoming one of the three best-selling books in Argentina. Dona Petrona capitalised on and contributed to the growing appreciation for women's domestic roles as the Argentine economy expanded and fell into periodic crises. Masiello's book 'sheds light on a relatively little-known group of extremely interesting women in the formative period of a major literature...[It] breaks new ground and will be a standard reference for the subject' - Margaret Sayers Peden. Evoking the famous watchwords of Argentine president Domingo Sarmiento (1868-74), "Between Civilization and Barbarism" explores the positioning of women within the Argentine nation and argues that women neither sought alliance with the 'civilizing' agenda of leading statesmen nor found identity in the extreme poses of 'barbarism', to which some intellectuals had condemned them. Instead, women used literary and political texts to surpass the tightly outlined roles assigned to them. Beginning with literary and journalistic texts written by and about women from the time of Sarmiento, Francine Masiello traces strategic shifts in the discourse on gender at moments of national crisis.She considers not only novels and guides to female behavior written by and for privileged women but also newspapers and political tracts produced by women of the working class. Extending her study into the urban expansion and modernization of the 1920s, Masiello explores the nature of gender relations posited in treatises on crime and public disorder and in the texts of avant-garde and social-realist writers.
