Freddy is a Bolivian with a wife and children back home who has come to Buenos Aires to seek work. At the small bar/restaurant where he finds a job as a cook, his contact with the owner, the working-class customers, and his co-workers tells a story of poverty, intolerance, violence, and despair in contemporary Argentina.

Gertrudis is a Jewish immigrant born on the docks when her parents' ship arrived in Argentina. She was reluctant to be photographed being dubbed ugly by her jealous brother. While married to an older rancher she was drawn to the photographer, handsome but physically impaired who was hired to photograph their ranch. The film uses live action and still photography to convey the message of this film.
