- Summary
-
There was, perhaps, no more imaginative a tribute to Bach in 2000, the year which marked the 250th anniversary of the composer's death, than The Bach Cantata Pilgrimage undertaken by the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists under their conductor, Sir John Eliot Gardiner. This was not only the most talked about celebration of Bach's music but also that which must undoubtedly have generated the most performances of it. In the course of a single year, these musicians performed Bach's entire surviving cantata oeuvre -- amounting to almost 200 works -- in Abbeys, Cathedrals, churches and chapels throughout Europe and, indeed, much further afield. It was as appropriate and as fulsome a tribute to the Leipzig Thomaskantor as anyone could wish for, beginning on Christmas Day 1999 in Weimar's Herderkirche, and concluding in St. Bartholomew's Church, New York on 31st December 2000. Fifteen countries were visited and ninety concerts given, attracting large and enthusiastic audiences, some of whose individuals followed conductor, choir and instrumentalists from one venue to another.

- Summary
-
Sir John Tavener, knighted in 2000 (one year before this documentary's release), is a one-of-a-kind composer. This documentary brings us into the heart of the composer's dense and complex personality. While the master of slow, reflective, singing music, with diverse and exotic sources of inspiration, the Englishman always remained closely attached to his native country, in which he is widely admired and celebrated. Many of his compositions are based on poems by British authors, in particular works by William Blake. A devout Christian, he also wrote a lot of religious music, influenced not just by Christianity but also by Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, among other religions. Sick with Marfan syndrome, he died in 2013 at 69 years old.

- Summary
-
In this, the first English biography to capture Gainsbourg in all his contradiction and gleeful outrageousness, Simmons tells the fascinating story of the Gallic star. Drawing on hours of new interviews with his intimates-among them Jane Birkin, Sly & Robbie, Marianne Faithfull, and celebrated producer Philippe Lerichomme-Simmons describes in crackling prose the scope of Gainsbourg's achievement while doing full justice to his complicated emotional life. Simmons's work will stand as the definitive take on a dizzying genius.

25. Elgar [2001]
- Mundy, Simon, 1954-
- Rev. ed. - London : Omnibus, 2001.
- Description
- Book — 240p. : ill. ; 25 cm.
- Summary
-
Elgar was England's greatest late romantic composer. His symphonies, the "Enigma Variations" and oratorios made him the toast of Europe and America during his lifetime. His ceremonial music, such as the "Pomp and Circumstance Marches", made him a national institution. But there was a more troubled and less confident side to him which can be heard in his chamber music and concertos. This revised edition explores his life from his background in a Worcester music shop to his final years as Master of the King's Music and the first composer to make recordings of all his work.

- Summary
-
"Impressed with how European music could have a "German sound", a "French sound", and so on, Aaron Copland returned from his years in Paris to New York City, intent on capturing the essence of the "American sound." This documentary presents an artful blending of the life and music of one of America's great modern composers. The many milestones in Copland's long career are discussed by his biographer, Howard Pollock, while stirring images of Copland's native city are set to selections of his music as performed by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. FRSO conductor Hugh Wolff provides astute commentary. Many interviews with Copland are included, along with a historic recording of "Clarinet Concerto" with Benny Goodman playing and Copland conducting"--Container.

40. Schumann [2001]
- Jensen, Eric Frederick, 1951-
- Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2001.
- Description
- Book — xv, 380 p., [8] p. of plates : ill., music ; 25 cm.
- Summary
-
Robert Schumann, one of the most beloved composers of the Romantic movement, embodied the passion and imaginative spirit of his age. Known for his musical and literary genius and his legendary romance with his wife Clara, Schumann was also plagued with debilitative bouts of depression that led him to live his last days in a German mental asylum. This important new biography recreates the dynamics of this man and his music with unprecedented range, offering new insight into his final years and his lasting musical achievements. Based on Schumann's recently published journals, letters, and new research, author Eric Jensen renders a balanced portrait of the composer with both scholarly authority and engaging clarity. Biographical chapters alternate with commentary on Schumann's piano, choral, symphonic, and operatic works, demonstrating how the circumstances of his life helped shape the music he wrote at various periods. Chronicling the forbidden romance of Robert and Clara, Jensen offers a nuanced look at the evolution of their relationship. He also follows Schuman's creative musical criticism, which championed the burgeoning careers of Chopin, Liszt, and Brahms and challenged the musical tastes of nineteenth-century Europe. Most importantly, he presents new evidence that Schumann-locked away in the asylum at Endenich-had returned sufficiently to health to justify his removal from confinement a year before his death. Like the innovations of his final compositions from 1845-1854, his sanity was overlooked and misunderstood by his contemporaries. Jensen corrects the historical record, illuminating the tragedy of Schumann's final days and refuting the common dismissal of his final works as the result of an unstable mind. A significant addition to music literature, Schumann is the first authoritative biography of the composer written for general readers as well as music students and historians.
