Miel et cendres tells the story of three women in contemporary North Africa. The youngest, Leila, flees a potential rape after three men see her kissing her boyfriend on the beach. She is rescued by Naima, a doctor in her 40s, who studied medicine in Moscow, fell in love with a Russian student, but was forced to come home for an arranged marriage. Naima later treats Amina for injuries reported as being caused by a fall, but which she recognizes as the result of Amina's husband having beat Amina. The stories illustrate the way in which men can maintain constricting moral beliefs about women and their given roles, and how love offers no concrete protection from this.
