An early portrait of the Syrian-born Phares Behannesey (187901950) and his brother in "native dress," presumably taken while Phares was resident in Galesburg, Illinois and touring as a lecturer on life in the Middle East. Phares later settled in Los Angeles and became a prominent member of the Los Angeles Arab-American community. Behannesey was one of the local Arab-Americans who funded the 1909 legal fight of George Shishim to establish that Arab-Americans were in fact members of the "white race" and eligible for U.S. citizenship. The collection consists of performing artist and other celebrity portraits compiled from numerous donations during the first 60 years of the Archive of Recorded Sound (1958-2018). The majority of photographs in this collection were removed from the ARS Subject File Collection (ARS-0201). These include autographed images, publicity stills, postcards, lithographs, and reprints dating from the mid-nineteeth century through the 2000s. Notable examples within the collection include portraits from the Ravinia Festival's golden age of opera (1919-1931), 20th century conductors such as Arturo Toscanini and Pierre Monteux, and rare 19th century portraits of opera stars.

Unidentified Sioux Indians gathered in front of a teepee. Standing together are two men, a woman, and a young boy and girl. The men wear dentalia breastplates, long shirts with fringe, and feathers in their hair. One holds a rifle and the other holds a tall forked stick. The woman and girl wear dresses and long dentalia earrings. The boy wears fringed pants and a brimmed hat, and carries a blanket over one arm. Another woman sits on the ground by a branch tripod holding a cook pot over a fire pit. Behind the group are other teepees.

An oblong photo measuring approximately 21-1/2" x 17" mounted on a board measuring 26" x 22". Depicts officers of the Austro-Hungarian Navy on board a ship at Yokohama harbor, Japan. Research has shown that the only time ships of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were in Yokohama was at the conclusion of the Boxer Rebellion fighting in 1900. Photograph shows 33 individuals in uniform.
