One afternoon the makers heard that bebop singer Dave Lambert and his quintet would be auditioning at the R.C.A. studios in Manhattan. They went along to the recording session and filmed the group amidst an array of musicians, engineers, executives and onlookers, showing how a collection of tense and nervous individuals is transformed into a single musical unit.
