- Description
- Video — 1 videodisc (102 min.) : sound, color and black & white ; 4 3/4 in. Sound: digital; optical. Video: NTSC. Digital: video file; Blu-ray; all region.
- Summary
-
"A feature-length documentary portrait of the New York artist Carolee Schneemann by Canadian filmmaker Marielle Nitoslawska. A pioneer of performance and body art as well as avant-garde cinema, Schneemann has been breaking the frames of the art world for five decades, in a variety of mediums, challenging assumptions of feminism, gender, sexuality, and identity. Utilizing a rich variety of film and hi-definition formats, Breaking The Frame can be described as a kinetic, hyper-cinematic intervention, a critical meditation on the relation of art to the physical, domestic and conceptual aspects of daily life and on the attributes of memory. It uses Schneemann's autobiographical materials to narrate the historic upheaval within Western art in post-war America. The film captures Schneemann in her own words, images and reflections, at work, at home, in the studio, and interweaves extensive film excerpts from her groundbreaking film work in both super 8 and 16mm such as Fuses (1967) and Kitch's Last Meal (1973-76), with documentation of performances including Meat Joy (1964), Interior Scroll (1975) and more recent museum commissions and exhibitions. ... The visual composition is complemented by a soundtrack featuring the music of composer James Tenney. Tenney was Schneemann's companion and collaborator for many years, and the two remained close friends until his death in 2006."--From breakingtheframe.com.

"About one hour south of the wealthy Silicon Valley and twenty minutes east of the affluent Monterey/Carmel area, home of the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, sits the head of the fertile Salinas Valley. Known as the "salad bowl of the world" for its production of lettuce, broccoli, and many other crops, the Salinas Valley is home to thousands of Mexican American and immigrant families with strong ties to agriculture. About 30 miles into the valley is the small agricultural town of Greenfield, where journalist Damian Trujillo's family first settled in 1972 after coming to the United States from Mexico through the Bracero Program. Damian's parents struggled to support their family of ten on the meager wages they earned laboring in the fields. Growing up, Damian shared a room with his five brothers and in seventh grade he joined his parents and older siblings working in the fields. He dreamed of breaking this cycle. Despite knowing little about higher education, Damian was the first in his family to graduate from college. His older brothers and sisters sacrificed their own educations to work to make money for their family. This 30-minute documentary follows the life of Damian Trujillo, from farmworker in the Salinas Valley to student at San Jose State University where Damian first realized he had an accent while working at the college radio station. Finally, it follows his path to the NBC newsroom. Early in his career Damian feared having to go back to working in the fields, the only other reality he understood. From his regrets over his early relationship with his father to being told he talked like a "gang-member," Damian talks about what it means to be a proud Chicano, how he gives back to his community, and why he wants his children to know where they came from. Damian's story is the quintessential American success story. The goal of this project is to intervene in the popular stereotypes that depict Latinos as "illegals," or "gang members," among other negative representations. From the Fields: An American Journey deconstructs popular perceptions of Latinos by reframing the American success story. This film goes beyond the hateful rhetoric surrounding the immigration debate and into a deeper exploration of what it means to work, to support family, and to contribute to our American society."-- http://www.american.edu/clals/FromtheFields.cfm

Seen through the lens of filmmaker Brian Oakes, Foley's childhood friend, JIM: The James Foley Story takes viewers from small-town New England to the adrenaline-fueled front lines of Libya and Syria, where Foley pushed the limits of danger to report on the plight of civilians impacted by war. The film culminates in Foley's 2012 capture by ISIS and the confusion and emotional upheaval that followed, ending in his tragic death nearly two years later. Foley's family, friends and colleagues help tell Jim's story, while his fellow hostages reveal the details of captivity with chilling immediacy. Gut-wrenching and powerful, with unparalleled access, JIM: The James Foley Story is a harrowing chronicle of bravery, compassion and pain at the dawn of America's war with ISIS"--Container.

"In 1974, Leon Gast traveled to Africa to film Zaire 74, a music festival planned to accompany an unprecedented sports spectacle: the Rumble in the Jungle, in which late-career underdog Muhammad Ali would contend with the younger powerhouse George Foreman for the boxing heavyweight championship title--'a fight between two blacks in a black nation, organized by blacks,' as a Kinshasa billboard put it. When the main event was delayed, extending Ali's stay in Africa, Gast wound up amassing a treasure trove of footage, observing the wildly charismatic athlete training for one of the toughest bouts of his career while basking in his role as black America's proud ambassador to postcolonial Africa. Two decades in the making, When We Were Kings features interviews with Norman Mailer and George Plimpton that illustrate the sensational impact of the fight, rounding out an Academy Award-winning portrait of Ali that captures his charm, grace and defiance"--Container.
