Afghanistan's history, internal political development, foreign relations, and very existence as an independent state have largely been determined by its geographic location at the crossroads of Central, West, and South Asia. In modern times, as well as in antiquity, vast armies of the world passed through Afghanistan, temporarily establishing local control and often dominating Iran and northern India. Islam has played a key role in the formation of Afghanistan as well. Although it was the scene of great empires and flourishing trade for over two millennia, Afghanistan did not become a truly independent nation until the twentieth century. In much of the twentieth century, Afghanistan remained neutral. It was not a participant in World War II, nor aligned with either power bloc in the Cold War. However, it was a beneficiary of the latter rivalry as both the Soviet Union and the U.S. vied for influence by building such infrastructure works as roads, airports, water and sewer systems, and hospitals. The U.S. State Department Central Classified Files are the definitive source of American diplomatic reporting on political, military, social, and economic developments throughout the world in the twentieth century.

This pioneering work brings together for the first time in a single reference work all of the extant, fugitive, and recently discovered registration data on African American voters from Colonial America to the present. It features election returns for African American presidential, senatorial, congressional, and gubernatorial candidates over time. Rich, insightful narrative explains the data and traces the history of the laws dealing with the enfranchisement and disenfranchisement of African Americans. Topics covered include: - the contributions of statistical pioneers including Monroe Work, W.E.B. DuBois and Ralph Bunche - African American organizations, like the NAACP and National Equal Rights League (NERL) - pioneering African American officeholders, including the few before the Civil War - four influxes of African American voters: Reconstruction (Southern African American men), the Fifteenth Amendment (African American men across the country), the Nineteenth Amendment (African American female voters in 1920 election), and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 - the historical development of disenfranchisement in the South and the statistical impact of the tools of disenfranchisement: literacy clauses, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses. The African-American Electorate features more than 300 tables, 150 figures, and 50 maps, many of which have been created exclusively for this work using demographic, voter registration, election return, and racial precinct data that have never been collected and assembled for the public. An appendix includes popular and electoral voting data for African-American presidential, congressional, and gubernatorial candidates, and a comprehensive bibliography indicates major topic areas and eras concerning the African-American electorate. The African American Electorate offers students and researchers the opportunity, for the first time, to explore the relationship between voters and political candidates, identify critical variables, and situate African Americans' voting behavior and political phenomena in the context of America's political history.

AidData is a development research and innovation lab at the College of William & Mary. Our interdisciplinary team of 40 faculty and staff helps international development organizations to more effectively track, target, coordinate, and evaluate their investments. We use precise data and rigorous methods to address the question of ‘who is doing what, where, for whom, and to what effect’. Our work is made possible through partnerships with USAID’s Global Development Lab, the World Bank and the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, among others. AidData Research Datasets are organized into two collections: Sub-national, Geospatial Research Datasets and Country-Level Research Datasets. The Country-level dataset includes commitment information for over 1.5 million development finance activities funded between 1947 and 2013. The dataset covers 96 donors and includes ODA, OOF flows, Equity Investments, and Export Credits where available. AidData Core Research Releases are particularly useful for researchers since they are flat, static versions of the data that allow for replication and comparison. AidData’s goal is to publish updated research releases on a bi-annual basis.

There is no truly complete edition of Albert the Great (ca. 1200-1280) works, and the age and the rarity of the most complete one (Opera omnia, ed. A. Borgnet, Paris, 1890-1899, itself based on Opera omnia, ed. P. Jammy, Lyon, 1651) render it hard to access for many scholars. The new critical edition (sometimes called Editio Coloniensis), begun in 1951 led by the Albertus-Magnus-Institut of Bonn, offers a much more reliable text but will not be completed before many more decades. Scholars can use the present website in order to : 1) download image files (.pdf) of all of Albert's works which can be found in the Borgnet edition as well as the 21 volumes of the Jammy edition, in addition to a few other writings which have been edited individually and which, like the Borgnet and the Jammy editions, are too old to be covered by copyright law; 2) search electronically 24 of those works, using a search engine which is endowed with boolean operators and which gives access to more than 4.1 million words (corresponding to more than 10000 pages in print); 3) browse those same 24 works on line.

This report analyzes emails from the accounts of deceased RAND Corporation researcher and apparent CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) contractor Mr. Scott Gerwehr. Based on analysis of the Gerwehr emails and reference to related open source documents, the authors note five key findings related to the APA: 1. The APA secretly coordinated with officials from the CIA, White House, and the Department of Defense to create an APA ethics policy on national security interrogations that comported with thenclassified legal guidance authorizing the CIA torture program. A US government research scientist, who had recently served as President Bush's behavioral science advisor, is reported to have secretly drafted "language related to research" inserted by APA officials into the 2005 APA ethics policy on interrogations. The APA had numerous contacts with CIA contract psychologists Drs. James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen starting in at least 2003, including contacts related to interrogation techniques; at least one senior APA official was informed of their clandestine role at the CIA related to interrogations; yet APA has consistently denied such contacts. APA did not disclose Dr. James Mitchell's past APA membership when it released its 2007 statement in response to journalists' revelations regarding Mitchell's role in abusive interrogations. Despite substantial contact between the APA, the White House and CIA officials, including the over 600 emails noted in this report, there is no evidence that any APA official expressed concern over mounting reports of psychologist involvement in detainee abuse during four years of direct email communications with senior members of the US intelligence community. The APA's complicity in the CIA torture program, by allowing psychologists to administer and calibrate permitted harm, undermines the fundamental ethical standards of the profession. If not carefully understood and rejected by the profession, this may portend a fundamental shift in the profession's relationship with the people it serves.

American Fiction, 1774–1920 encompasses prose fiction written by Americans from colonial times to the early twentieth century. The titles to the year 1900, which are available as of March 2016, include nearly all of the works found in Lyle H. Wright's three-volume American Fiction: A Contribution Toward a Bibliography, which is widely considered the most comprehensive bibliography of American adult prose fiction of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection includes novels, short stories, romances, fictitious biographies, travel accounts and sketches, allegories, and tract-like tales typifying the development of American literature in a changing culture. Titles published between 1901 and 1920 will be released to the collection by July 2016. Books published in the years 1901-1910 are sourced from the Library of Congress Shelf List of American Adult Fiction. The period 1911-1920 is built on the Geoffrey D. Smith bibliography, which is sourced from the William Charvat Collection of American Fiction at The Ohio State University Libraries.
