HSDB is a toxicology data file on the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET®). It focuses on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas. All data are referenced and derived from a core set of books, government documents, technical reports and selected primary journal literature. HSDB is peer-reviewed by the Scientific Review Panel (SRP), a committee of experts in the major subject areas within the data bank's scope. HSDB is organized into individual chemical records, and contains over 5000 such records. Users can search by chemical or other name, chemical name fragment, Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (RN), and/or subject terms.

An occupational health database designed for health and safety professionals and for consumers seeking information about the health effects of exposure to chemicals and biologicals at work. Haz-Map links jobs and hazardous tasks with occupational diseases and their symptoms. Chemicals and biological agents in Haz-Map are linked to industrial processes and other activities such as hobbies. Occupational diseases and their symptoms are associated with hazardous job tasks and possible exposure to hazardous agents. Information from textbooks, journal articles, and electronic databases such as NLM's Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB®) is classified and summarized to create the database. Some of Haz-Map's features include: text search capability, browsing by jobs, diseases, or agents, searching hazardous agents by adverse effects, searching diseases by jobs and findings, and automated searches of TOXNET. Definitions of technical terms are available by selecting hyperlinks to the glossary.

"The Household Products Database 'links over 4,000 consumer brands to health effects from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by the manufacturers.' A consumer or scientist can search or browse by product name, chemical, or MSDS. Household products included are those usually found under the kitchen and bathroom sinks such as Comet Cleanser with Chlorinol and SOS Steel Wool Pads. A search of the Comet brand name retrieves all products containing that brand name. Records for each product contain a physical description of the product, its purpose, the manufacturer with address and telephone numbers, health effects, safe handling and disposal information, and ingredients from the product's label and/or Material Safety Data Sheets. One especially nice feature is the ability to highlight a word or phrase on the product information page and generate an automatic search of TOXNET (http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/) simply by clicking on the button provided. This is a valuable resource for both consumers and scientists who need to quickly find contents, health effects, or safe handling instructions for common household products"--Reviewed Mar. 20, 2004, "Best Free Reference Web Sites 2004," RUSA Quarterly, Fall 2004.
