AidData is a development research and innovation lab at the College of William & Mary. Our interdisciplinary team of 40 faculty and staff helps international development organizations to more effectively track, target, coordinate, and evaluate their investments. We use precise data and rigorous methods to address the question of ‘who is doing what, where, for whom, and to what effect’. Our work is made possible through partnerships with USAID’s Global Development Lab, the World Bank and the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, among others. AidData Research Datasets are organized into two collections: Sub-national, Geospatial Research Datasets and Country-Level Research Datasets. The Country-level dataset includes commitment information for over 1.5 million development finance activities funded between 1947 and 2013. The dataset covers 96 donors and includes ODA, OOF flows, Equity Investments, and Export Credits where available. AidData Core Research Releases are particularly useful for researchers since they are flat, static versions of the data that allow for replication and comparison. AidData’s goal is to publish updated research releases on a bi-annual basis.

Database contains more than 240 million unique voting-age individuals, starting with a foundation of 185 million registered voters - a unified national voter file - collected from Election Officials in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Commercial data adds another 55 million unregistered individuals and enhances the entire database with hundreds of fields, including household attributes, purchasing and investment profiles, donation behavior, occupational information, recreational interests, and engagement with civic and community groups. Further data is integrated from the Census, specialty data, and media market geographies. Records go back more than a decade. The database has two access points, the Q Tool and the M Tool. The Q Tool is a query to conduct extracts of the database, and the M Tool is used for uploading the researcher’s data to the database and matching voter records from the researcher’s dataset to the database information.

The ICSU-WDS Data Portal is a prototype allowing retrieval of datasets from participating WDS Members. As a first step, it provides access to currently available metadata catalogues using standards. The prototype was started in 2007 with initial candidates willing to participate in setting up the portal framework. It is currently being updated to include more participating WDS Members and will be relaunched.

DataCite Metadata Search is a service that allows people to search for datasets registered with DataCite, via the metadata associated with the datasets. Data-Cite is a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to establish easier access to research data on the Internet, increase acceptance of research data as legitimate, citable contributions to the scholarly record, and support data archiving that will permit results to be verified and re-purposed for future study. Just as research is global, DataCite is global, with member institutions offering services and advice directly where they are needed by the researchers.

Research data is the foundation on which scientific, technical and medical knowledge is built. Oftentimes data sets do not leave the lab, or may go unnoticed as supplementary files. Elsevier provides solutions that support researchers to store, share, discover and use this data. By doing so authors are able to receive credit for the full spectrum of their work, and the wider research community benefits from the ability to discover and reuse the data. They are indexing images, tables and supplementary data from (Elsevier or Open Access) content sources, and are considering these to be research data components. They also index a series of domain-specific repositories, as well as non-domain specific ones.

At approximately 1 km resolution (30" X 30"), LandScan is the finest resolution global population distribution data available and represents an ambient population (average over 24 hours). The LandScan algorithm uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and a multi-variable dasymetric modeling approach to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary. Since no single population distribution model can account for the differences in spatial data availability, quality, scale, and accuracy as well as the differences in cultural settlement practices, LandScan population distribution models are tailored to match the data conditions and geographical nature of each individual country and region.

A single downloadable .csv file provides estimates on "violent deaths" from 2004 onwards. The violent deaths indicator combines national level statistics on homicide and data on fatalities occurred in armed conflict. The database covers more than 189 countries and territories and it is kept constantly updated. Estimates on violent deaths between 2007 and 2012 are at the core of the analysis presented in the third and latest edition of the Global Burden of Armed Violence, launched in May 2015. The database combines data from a wide range of sources that report the number of people died in violent events across both conflict and non-conflict settings. Typical sources are, among others, hospitals, mortuaries, police as well as those organizations that document casualties in areas affected by armed conflict.
