The Letter of Prester John, to the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Comnenus, which began to circulate ca. 1165, was claimed to have been written by the supposed Priest and King of the Far East, known as Prester John. He was supposedly an acclaimed conqueror of the Persians and viewed as a potential powerful ally against Islam. The letter describes the wonders of the East, stretching from the Indian Ocean and Ethiopia across Persia and Central Asia to China. The legend of Prester John proved very popular from the 12th to the 17th centuries and was translated into many languages, often elaborated with further marvels and embellished with mythical accounts.

Schiltberger was a German soldier, traveller and writer. He first fought against the Ottoman troops on the Hungarian border in 1396 and was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Nicopolis. Sultan Bayezid I took him into service as a runner and he accompanied Ottoman troops to Egypt and parts of Asia Minor. With the defeat of Bayezid in 1402, Schiltberger passed into the hands of Timur. He was then enslaved by various Turkish masters including one of Timur's sons and Chekre, a Tartar prince, leading to further extensive travels, before his escape near Batum. He returned to his Bavarian home via Constantinople and the Ukrainian cities of Kilia and Akerman. His Reisebuch records both his own experiences and the history, culture and customs of the many countries he visited, including regions on both sides of the Danube, Russia, Armenia, Siberia, Turkey, the Crimea and Egypt.
