This noteworthy scrapbook provides an essential historic record of the tumultuous final years of the 4th Regiment “China Marines” against the backdrop of the increasing tensions and battles between Chinese and Japanese forces in Shanghai in the late 1930’s. Kelly (1917-1991) was a talented young US Marine Corps radio operator who has managed to preserve many of the original radio dispatches, and cablegrams surrounding the fast devolving situation in Shanghai in 1937-1939. The clippings from the Shanghai Times, and China Times are filled with notices of artillery duels and battle, with illustrations showing the overwhelming struggle by the 4th Regiment to preserve American interests in the International Zone.
