The National Academies Press (NAP) was created to publish the reports issued by the American bodies National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. The NAP publishes more than 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and health. Thousands of books can be read online for free and many downloaded for free.
Many titles are offered in Adobe PDF format. Many of these books can be downloaded for free by the chapter or the entire book, while others are available for purchase. Many more books are also freely readable online in HTML format. The 'Discovery Engine' feature can be used to perform keyword searches across the full range of NAP publications, and specific subject areas can be browsed as well.

Phase I (the current release) includes materials from 1943-1970. Phase 2 will cover 1842-1908; Phase 3 will cover 1908-1943. The Archives collections contain material that dates back to the Philharmonic's first concert in 1842, but the first phase of our digitization begins in the middle of this long history. In deciding where to begin with our digitization project, we held a roundtable discussion that included librarians, historians, musicians, conductors, journalists, and students to evaluate the different time periods in the Philharmonic's history and to determine what might provide the most unique source material. The International Era, 1943-1970 was selected for several reasons. It is the time when the United States becomes a world power and New York City its cultural capital; when the New York Philharmonic emerges as a worldwide symbol of this new cultural position. -Web Site

The Nixon Years, 1969-1974 covers Richard Nixon's entire presidential term and allows scholars and researchers the opportunity to assess, from a British, European and Commonwealth perspective, Nixon's handling of numerous Cold War crises, his administration's achievements, as well as his increasingly controversial activities and unorthodox use of executive powers culminating in Watergate and resignation. Top level Anglo-American discussions and briefing papers dominate this collection, which provides complete FCO 7 and FCO 82 files from The National Archives, Kew.
Many files focus on foreign policy issues ranging from the Vietnam War and Paris Peace talks, to Nixon's China visit in 1972 and US relations with the Middle East. There is also a wealth of material on social conditions, domestic reforms, trade, culture and the environment. There is also significant coverage of Nixon's domestic policy initiatives such as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, the war on cancer, and the extension of the Voting Rights Act and liberal action on Civil Rights.
