- Summary

"Ever since the national rise of 'Black Studies' during the second half of the twentieth century, this field has focused on the distinctive individuals, places, events, concepts, and circumstances of African American history from the seventeenth century to the present -- from the early national period, when New World Africans first reckoned with Enlightenment preconceptions of race, to the new millennium, when African Americans continue to negotiate the conditions of their lives in the United States. African American Studies is now a vibrant, complex, and growing field for the intellectual and curricular mission of centers, institutes, programs, and departments at colleges and universities across the country. Oxford Bibliographies in African American Studies represents another step in the field's institutional progress. Regularly updated and expanded with new content, the module will provide bibliographic articles that identify, organize, cite, and annotate scholarship on key areas of African American Studies -- culture, politics, law, history, society, religion, and economics."-- Editorial page.

These records commence at the fracturing of the British Central Africa Protectorate which led to the official formation of the Nyasaland Protectorate. Most records conclude after Nyasaland gained independence in 1964. Nyasaland, now known as Malawi, is never more than one hundred miles wide from west to east and is almost enveloped on three sides by Mozambique, formerly known as Portugese East Africa. The main reason why Nyasaland became a British rather than a Portuguese colonial possession, was that David Livingstone had travelled extensively in the country and written extensively of its potential for Christianity and commerce. His travels were followed by a number of Scottish missionaries who, at the time of the Scramble for Africa, lobbied successfully for the creation of a British administration. In the early years the British Government ruled Nyasaland directly, supplanting local Chiefs in order to assume control. From the 1930's, the Government reversed this decision as they moved to indirect rule and worked with local Chiefs to govern Nyasaland. The work with local Chiefs had limits however and when the Government was faced with opposition to the federation of Nyasaland with Rhodesia in 1953, they proceeded regardless of local protest. The decision to enforce this alliance would hasten the arrival of the call for independence. Commerce and the development of natural resources were key priorities for the colonial government. The Government's most thoroughly documented concern is farming, with surveys of land and water supplies featuring alongside reports on agriculture and veterinary care. Financial returns were also very important to the Government with Estimates, Financial Returns, and Audits featuring alongside Customs and Excise. The Government were particularly keen to ensure that the natives purchased insurance; when the Government found that insurance policies were being mistaken for bank accounts they resolved to educate the population on how to use this financial product. This collection consists of nine groups rather than its original eight, this is because the size of the Natural Resources group was sufficient to require it being split in two

The origins of modern Sierra Leone can be traced back to the attempts of a group of British businessmen and philanthropists, commonly known as the Clapham Sect, to found a settlement of freed slaves on the Sierre Leone peninsula in 1778. British colonial rule in Sierra Leone commenced in 1808, when the tiny Freetown enclave became a Crown Colony under the direct responsibility of the British government which ruled through a Governor. At various periods during the nineteenth century, the Governor of Sierra Leone also served as Governor-in-Chief of Britain's other West African possessions. As late as 1888, the Governor of Sierra Leone was responsible for the administration of the Gambia. However, formal British authority remained confined to the Freetown peninsula until 1896, when the hinterland which comprises the greater part of what is today Sierra Leone was declared a British Protectorate. It was only after the establishment of the Sierra Leone Protectorate that British colonial administration and technical departments began to assume a complexity which warranted separate departmental reports. During the nineteenth century much of this information was published in abbreviated form in the Government Gazette or in the Governor's Annual Report. The Annual Departmental Reports relating to Sierra Leone are complementary to the Blue Books relating to Sierra Leone. For the purposes of organization, the departmental collection has been divided into nine sections: Administration, Finance, Judicial and Police, Natural Resources, Social Services, Transport and Public Works, Communications and Post Office Savings, Commerce, also Staff Lists and Miscellaneous Content. Within each section, departmental series have been organized thematically and in chronological order, prefaced by selected extraordinary reports and sessional papers of particular relevance, and followed by related sub-sections. Description drawn from D.C. Dorward's introduction

- Summary

The occupation of Southern Rhodesia was first triggered by the discovery of gold in South Africa. When the British South Africa Company's hopes of uncovering gold in Mashonaland were not realised, they attacked and defeated the Ndebele in 1893, then occupied Matabeleland too. The Company's treatment of the native population inspired the Shona and Ndebele Risings of 1896-1897, this rebellion was defeated with great difficulty. After its defeat some more experienced colonial managers were appointed to administrate Rhodesia and those managers initiated the publication of the reports reproduced here. Southern Rhodesia was first formally annexed as a British colony from 1923, Northern Rhodesia became a British Colony in 1924. From 1953 to 1963 Southern Rhodesia was re-united with Northern Rhodesia to form the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Federal period witnessed considerable white immigration, the white population of Southern Rhodesia trebled between 1945 and 1960;" this increase was actively encouraged by the white population who administered the running of the country. This exponential population growth increased political tensions between the native and the white populations, these tensions came to a head in the mid 1960?s. In 1964 Northern Rhodesia became independent as Zambia, Southern Rhodesia would begin calling itself Rhodesia. Then in 1965, after its attempts to negotiate independence failed, the government which only represented the white settlers made a Unilateral Declaration of Independence. This declaration of 'independence' was not recognised by the outside world and gave rise to guerrilla warfare internally. The war ended with a 'power-sharing' agreement including some black politicians in June 1979;" this was followed by the constitutional agreement between the warring factions of Zimbabwe and the UK Government, which was reached at Lancaster House in December 1979, this in-turn led to the first election under universal suffrage. These annual reports illustrate the dramatic historical development of Southern Rhodesia from corporate colonisation, through imperial colonisation, to independence
