Mounted albumen prints, commercially produced by Hill and his two studios, Hill & Yard and Hill & Watkins, of the newly established Stanford University and of the activity of the Palo Alto Stock Farm, upon which the University had been built. Subjects include campus views; interior and exterior views of major buildings (especially Encina Hall); events such as the university's opening day and the funeral of university founder Leland Stanford; students groups including Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Sigma Nu fraternity, and the staff of the literary magazine Sequoia; portrait of Professor Earl Barnes; and Palo Alto Stock Farm buildings and horses.

The images in this album primarily document the Palo Alto residence of Jane and Leland Stanford, the Palo Alto Stock Farm horses, and Stanford University. The university images include the cornerstone laying in 1887, opening day ceremonies in 1891, Encina Hall, Roble Hall, the Library, the Museum, student groups and activities, and various views of campus buildings. Other images include the Alameda in San Jose, palm trees, and prune drying. Many of the university images are also represented in the Stanford University Archives General Photograph Collection.

The Stanford historical photograph collection, containing over 16,000 images. Series 1, General Photographs, documents the campus and campus life; subjects include athletics, original construction of the campus, individual buildings, students and student life activities, commencement activities, academic departments, and damage from the 1906 earthquake. Series 2, Stanford Family, contains photographs of family members and friends, Stanford residences, the Palo Alto Stock Farm, and the Central Pacific Railroad. Series 3, Biographical Photographs, contains images of faculty and administrative staff. Series 4 contains oversized images and Series 5 contains copy negatives. The majority of photographs are black and white gelatin prints but nineteenth-century albumen prints mounted on boards are also represented. The collection spans the late 1880s through the 1990s.

The papers of Jane L. Stanford pertain largely to the founding and administration of Stanford University, along with her personal and social affairs; included in the papers are correspondence, business records, legal and financial papers, speeches, news clippings, and biographical materials. Correspondence, dating from 1860 to 1905, makes up the larger part of the collection. Most of the correspondence concerns the University. Other topics include personal and social matters, her travels, religious discussions, and her interest in kindergartens. Correspondents include David Starr Jordan, the first president of Stanford University, Charles Lathrop, Susan B. Anthony, Timothy and May Hopkins, Julia D. Grant (Mrs. Ulysses Grant) and other members of the Grant family, Caroline Harrison (Mrs. Benjamin Harrison), and Andrew D. White. There are also a large number of condolence letters on the death of Leland Stanford and of begging letters.

The maps in this collection pertain to the University campus, to other lands owned by Jane and Leland Stanford or the University, and to adjacent communities. Included are maps of the Palo Alto Stock Farm, the land in Santa Clara County that Leland and Jane Stanford purchased as a country home and trotting horse farm which later became the campus of Stanford University; plans for the proposed campus by F. L. Olmsted & Company; miscellaneous campus maps for planting schemes, location of the Peninsular Railway line on campus, plans for Junipero Serra Boulevard, and housing subdivisions; maps of adjacent communities of Mayfield, Woodside, Palo Alto, and Menlo Park along with other subjects such as San Francisquito Creek, Searsville Lake, and Greystone Quarry. There are also three map books: a small volume concerning assorted lands owned by the Stanfords, c. 1869-1903; a block book for the campus, 1901-1903; and insurance maps for the campus, 1917.
