5. Armand Bacou correspondence to his wife and daughter, 1915-1918 [1915 - 1918]
- Description
- Archive/Manuscript — 0.2 linear feet (1 half manuscript box)
- Summary
-
A collection of 226 original color illustrated postcards, written by Bacou and sent to his wife (and daughter) living in Moissac, small city in the Occitanie region in southern France. Armand [b. 1889] was one of earliest citizens called up in the mobilization of men from the classes of 1883-1913. He served four years on the Front as a member of the 23rd Artillery Regiment (17.02.1919); he was later decorated with the Bronze Star War Cross. In 1913 he had married Hélène Marie Louise Rau, and they had a daughter, Georgette; in 1922, the couple had a son whom they named Germain Robert, after Armand’s cousin who was killed in the War. Another cousin, Fernand, was killed in battle in Aug. 1914. This collection brings together the surviving cards that Armand purchased, wrote and sent between August 19, 1915 and July 1918. The cards are here arranged (when known) chronologically...as Armand dated most of them...and addressed mainly to Marie Louise, although many are also written to Georgette. Almost all of the cards are of the style called "militaire fantasie" - images composed of often strangely posed scenes in a studio, with added inset images, and most hand-colored. While the selection includes a good number with patriotic themes, mand of the cards consist of series (four or five cards) of an occasional salacious of suggestive theme, such as a French solider in bed with his lover. Often, Armand would send such cards consecutively, with Marie Louise receiving the next installment every few days. Armand always used the complete verso of each card to pen his closely, yet legible, message, therey creating one long letter from the battle front. [From dealer description]
