The Lawrence Tibbett Collection was assembled and donated by his son, Richard M. Tibbett. The recordings in the collection are primarily privately issued 12" sound discs, both 78 rpm and 33 1/3 rpm. The collection also includes 10" single-sided discs recorded for the Victor Company, 1 7" tape reel, and written materials consisting of a set of 13 index cards with handwritten notes in pencil, photocopies of pages from published articles by Tibbett, and photocopies of two typed inventory lists of the collection prepared by the donor.

Included are some 23 prints of the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, the village of Writchpec, and its people. There are 5 prints of the White Deerskin Dance. There are 10 prints of the Siskiyou Indians and their village of Cah-te-Main. Some people are identified by name, Kah-hah (Hoopa), Tommy Bob (Klamath River Indian), and Phoebe (Cah-te-Main). Finally, there are 24 prints of artifacts, with good descriptions of materials. Only two prints do not pertain to the native peoples; one the cutting of a coast redwood, and the other of Stephen H. Meek.

The collection contains correspondence, diaries, photographs, artwork, audiovisual material, and ephemera documenting the Stuart and Hummel families' life and work in China as Methodist missionaries in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It also contains materials relating to R. Stuart Hummel's work as a cryptographer for the Navy and his work for the U.S. government in the Office of Chinese Affairs and the Office of Civil Defense.
