Ce petit livre pourrait être une introduction à la pharmacopée orientale. Il comprend une cinquantaine de lignes, tirées du début d'un manuscrit syriaque entré à la BNF (Paris) il y a quelques années sous le numéro syr. 423, dont l'auteur (Ph. Gignoux) a pu faire une édition critique grâce au même texte provenant de la collection des mss Mingana, syr. no 594. La nouveauté de ce texte réside dans le fait qu'il ne semble pas être une traduction d'un ouvrage grec, alors que la suite du même manuscrit provient pour l'essentiel de Galien. Ce texte nous apporte une quantité de noms de plantes médicinales et de produits animaux et minéraux. L'originalité réside aussi dans le fait que ces noms sont souvent glosés dans des langues comme le grec, l'arabe, l'arabo-persan, dont Gignoux a expliqué l'origine dans des articles préliminaires. Le texte syriaque et la traduction française ont été mis en face à face pour permettre aux botanistes de retrouver facilement tel ou tel passage. Cela devrait aussi entraîner les chercheurs à travailler davantage sur les plantes médicinales qui ont donné lieu à une littérature très abondante et passionnante.

In the eighteenth century, malaria was a prevalent and deadly disease, and the only effective treatment was found in the Andean forests of Spanish America: a medicinal bark harvested from cinchona trees that would later give rise to the antimalarial drug quinine. In 1751, the Spanish Crown asserted control over the production and distribution of this medicament by establishing a royal reserve of "fever trees" in Quito. Through this pilot project, the Crown pursued a new vision of imperialism informed by science and invigorated through commerce. But ultimately this project failed, much like the broader imperial reforms that it represented. Drawing on extensive archival research, Matthew Crawford explains why, showing how indigenous healers, laborers, merchants, colonial officials, and creole elites contested European science and thwarted imperial reform by asserting their authority to speak for the natural world. The Andean Wonder Drug uses the story of cinchona bark to demonstrate how the imperial politics of knowledge in the Spanish Atlantic ultimately undermined efforts to transform European science into a tool of empire.

Galen of Pergamum (AD 129-?199/216), physician to the court of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, was a philosopher, scientist, and medical historian, a theoretician and practitioner, who wrote forcefully and prolifically on an astonishing range of subjects and whose impact on later eras rivaled that of Aristotle. "Le " Bastiment des receptes " est un livre de secrets anomalie constitué en 1539 à partir de la traduction d'un recueil vénitien intitulé " Dificio di riceue ". Rédigé en langue vulgaire et destiné à un marché local, il fait partie d'une littérature de colportage rééditée jusqu'au XIXe siècle. Il est composé de recettes concernant la vie domestique, la médecine, les soins du corps et les cosmétiques, mais aussi la conservation des fruits et des fleurs, la chasse, la pêche, la fabrication et la conservation du vin. La manière de détacher un tissu ou d'en raviver la couleur ou bien de raccommoder un plat. L'artisanat est également présent, principalement autour du livre et de la teinture, mais aussi le luxe (confitures, parfums, savons), tout cela empreint de magie naturelle et mêlé à des divertissements, bons tours et expériences extraordinaires. Le but initial de l'ouvrage est celui de la transmission d'un savoir empirique déjà constitué en grande partie au cours de l'Antiquité et du Moyen Age. Mais le " Bâtiment des recettes ", qui fait de ses lecteurs des expérimentateurs, acquiert également une fonction culturelle et une dimension sociale en contribuant à l'élargissement du publie du livre technique. What common condition can be treated with cow dung? How do crushed oystershells ease heartburn? Can eels cure deafness? And how do you stop a stubborn case of the hiccups? If someone was struck down by illness or injury in the late eighteenth century, the chances are that they would have referred to William Buchan's Domestic Medicine - with the result that they might have found themselves drinking a broth made from sheep brain or administering drops of urine in their ears. The book's author, a Scottish physician, published his self-help manual in 1769 specifically for the benefit of people who were unable readily to access or afford medical assistance. Copies could be found in coffee-houses, in apothecary shops and private households, and in 1789 Fletcher Christian and his fellow mutineers took the sensible precaution of grabbing the copy from HMS Bounty before they fled to Pitcairn Island. Much of Dr Buchan's advice on how to live a healthy life and avoid disease is still sound and relevant today, such as eating a varied and healthy diet, breathing plenty of fresh air, and taking exercise. Many of his prescriptions are amusing when viewed in retrospect, such as his fondness for powdered Spanish fly and genital trusses. Other recommendations - bleeding a woman experiencing a difficult childbirth or administering mercury to treat numerous ailments - were downright dangerous. This edited selection of entries from one of the first medical self-help manuals gives a fascinating insight into popular treatments of the eighteenth century, derived both from folklore and the emerging medical science of the day.

This multifaceted study weaves a rich tapestry of Buddhist healing practices, Chinese medical knowledge, Asian pharmaceuticals, and Islamic formulas as it elucidates their appropriation and integration into medieval Japanese medicine. It expands the parameters of the study of medicine in East Asia, which to date has focused on the subject in individual countries, and introduces the dynamics of interaction and exchange that coursed through the East Asian macro-culture. The book explores these themes primarily through the two extant works of the Buddhist priest and clinical physician Kajiwara Shozen (1265-1337), who was active at the medical facility housed at Gokurakuji temple in Kamakura, the capital of Japan's first warrior government. With access to large numbers of printed Song medical texts and a wide range of materia medica from as far away as the Middle East, Shozen was a beneficiary of the efflorescence of trade and exchange across the East China Sea that typifies this era. His break with the restrictions of Japanese medicine is revealed in Ton'isho (Book of the simple physician) and Man'apo (Myriad relief formulas). Both of these texts are landmarks: the former being the first work written in Japanese for a popular audience; the latter, the most extensive Japanese medical work prior to the seventeenth century. Confluences of Medicine brings to the fore the range of factors--networks of Buddhist priests, institutional support, availability of materials, relevance of overseas knowledge to local conditions of domestic strife, and serendipity--that influenced the Japanese acquisition of Chinese medical information. It offers the first substantive portrait of the impact of the Song printing revolution in medieval Japan and provides a rare glimpse of Chinese medicine as it was understood outside of China. It is further distinguished by its attention to materia medica and medicinal formulas and to the challenges of technical translation and technological transfer in the reception and incorporation of a new pharmaceutical regime.

The corpus "Early Modern English Medical Texts" (EMEMT) is the second component of the Corpus of Early English Medical Writing (CEEM), a three-part series of historical corpora of medical writing from 1375-1800. "EMEMT" contains a two-million word representative sample of the entire field of English medical writings that appeared in print between 1500 and 1700, and provides continuity to Middle English Medical Texts (MEMT), published on CD-ROM by John Benjamins in 2005. The EMEMT corpus includes c. 230 texts, ranging from theoretical treatises rooted in academic traditions of medicine to popularized and utilitarian texts verging on household literature. The texts are grouped into six text categories that facilitate systematic research into the history of medical writing in its disciplinary context: general treatises and textbooks; treatises on specific topics; recipe collections and materia medica; regimen and health guides; surgical treatises; and samples of the first scientific journal, the Philosophical Transactions. "EMEMT" is released on CD-Rom with EMEMT Presenter, purpose-designed software by Raymond Hickey. The corpus is published with a book, "Early Modern English Medical Texts: Corpus Description and Studies", edited by Irma Taavitsainen Paivi Pahta.
