The World War II-era Farragut class destroyers were a unique collection of eight U.S. Navy ships. The first destroyers to be equipped with five-inch, 38 caliber dual-purpose guns and a fully automated fire control system, they presented unique challenges and experiences for the enlisted men who served aboard them. Fittingly, their sailors were a proud and cocky group, as they served on the smallest, roughest riding, and fastest men-of-war, ships with more firepower for their size than any other class of ship in the U.S. Navy.This book describes the life of the enlisted man aboard a Farragut class destroyer during the pre-war years when the ships were assigned to the Hawaiian Detachment; the war preparation period in 1941; and, finally, the wartime years. First-person narrations from the sailors collected from interviews and correspondence with the few remaining Farragut class destroyer sailors are the primary feature of this book. With the exception of narratives of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the book focuses not on combat but on the day-to-day recollections of sailors who lived and worked on some of the most distinguished ships ever built by the U.S. Navy. The book also briefly describes the evolution of the destroyer and the Farragut class destroyers, five of which survived the war.

The technical details of British warships were recorded in a set of plans produced by the builders on completion of every ship. Known as the as fitted' general arrangements, these drawings represented the exact appearance and fitting of the ship as it entered service. Intended to provide a permanent reference for the Admiralty and the dockyards, these highly detailed plans were drawn with exquisite skill in multi-coloured inks and washes that represent the acme of the draughtsman's art. Today they form part of the incomparable collection of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, which is using the latest scanning technology to make digital copies of the highest quality. Although bad eyesight kept him from receiving a commission in the U.S. Navy when he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1933, Draper Kauffman became a hero of underwater demolition in World War II and went on to a distinguished naval career. Today Admiral Kauffman is remembered as the nation's first frogman and the father of the Navy SEALs. While a large number of books have dealt with the navies and war at sea during the World Wars, the immediate aftermaths have generally received only minimal coverage. However, the fates of defeated navies are of enormous interest from a number of perspectives. These include the relative priorities of the victorious powers, acquisition and testing of ex-enemy materiel and the intended future capabilities of those ex-enemy navies that were to be allowed to continue to exist. This new book traces the histories of navies and ships of the defeated powers from the months leading up to the relevant armistices or surrenders through to the final execution of the appropriate post-war settlements. In doing so, it discusses the way in which the victorious powers reached their final demands, how these were implemented, and to what effect. The later histories of ships that saw subsequent service, either in their original navies or in those navies which acquired them, are also described. In doing this, much use is made of material drawn from archival, and in some cases archaeological, sources, some of which has never previously been used. Through these, a wide range of long-standing myths are busted, and some badly distorted modern views and assessments of events in the wake of the conflicts put right. The fascinating narrative will be accompanied by tabulated lists of all major navy-built (and certain significant ex-mercantile) enemy ships in commission at the relevant date of the armistice or surrender, or whose hulks were specifically listed for attention in post-Second World War allied agreements. These will include key dates in their careers and their ultimate fates. This book looks at the history of the trained officers and men who went by the cover name "Beach Jumpers". Their top-secret mission was to create and sustain the illusion that a military landing was imminent at Beach "A" when in fact US/Allied troops would hit the beaches 100 miles away at Beach "X". During World War II their tactics were extremely successful in Sicily, Salerno, Southern France and the Philippines. Beach Jumpers later served ashore and afloat in Vietnam. Their descendents, called "Fleet Tactical Deception Groups", continue their classified work today. This book details the development, major operations, weapons and leaders of the group. The Beach Jumpers began as a naval task group under the direct control of the fleet commander and consisted of specialists, officers and men, trained to conduct tactical cover and deception missions, to include radio and radar countermeasures.

This book describes in considerable detail the people, events ships and aircraft that shaped the Air Service from its origins in the late 19th century to its demise in 1945. The formative years began when a British Naval Mission was established in Japan in 1867 to advise on the development of balloons for naval purposes. After the first successful flights of fixed-wing aircraft in the USA and Europe, the Japanese navy sent several officers to train in Europe as pilots and imported a steady stream of new models to evaluate.During World War One Japan became allied with the UK and played a significant part in keeping the German fleets of ships and submarines at bay in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. However, in the international naval treaties that followed they felt betrayed, since the number of capital ships, battleships and cruisers, that they were allowed was below those of the USA and the UK.Aircraft carriers were not included, so a program of carrier building was started and continued until World War Two. At the same time they developed an aircraft industry and at the beginning of war their airplanes were comparable, and in some instances superior, to those of the British and Americans.Much prewar experience was gained during Japans invasion of China, but their continued anger with America festered and resulted in their becoming allied with Germany, Italy and the Vichy France during World War Two. There followed massive successful attacks on Pearl Harbor, the Philippines, the Southern Islands, Port Darwin and New Guinea.The British were decimated and the USA recoiled at the onslaught, taking over a year to regroup and take the war to the Imperial Japanese forces. Throughout the conflict many sea battles were fought and the name Zero became legendary. When Japan eventually capitulated after the Atomic bombs were dropped the Japanese Imperial Air Service was disbanded.
