7. Memorial to the future [2017]
- Poems. Selections English
- Törne, Volker von, author.
- Todmorden : Arc Publications, 2017.
- Description
- Book — 1 online resource (141 pages)
- Summary
-
It is no coincidence that the poet Volker von Toerne was, for many years, the Director of Aktion Suhnezeichen Friedensdienste (Action for Atonement - Service for Peace), the German charitable organisation for education and reparation in countries throughout the world that have suffered under fascism and other oppressive regimes. His father had been a member of the SS in Germany in the Second World War, and as a consequence, his poetry is written from the perspective of someone who suffered, through no fault of his own, from terrible guilt after the war. This selection from von Toerne's collected poems is particularly significant in that it is a powerful and moving articulation of the psychological burden still carried by countless people today whose voices are not often heard, a burden which von Toerne's powerful, poignant and sometimes angry poetry helps us all the better to understand.

- Summary
-
To expand our understanding of medieval literature in its wider context, there is a desperate need for more translations, since not every text in the Middle Ages was written in Latin, English, or French. Rudolf von Ems's Der guote Gerhart (ca. 1220) represents a major contribution to thirteenth-century German romance literature. The present English translation will allow those without knowledge of Middle High German to read and enjoy this significant composition and gain remarkable insights into a literary discourse that was to transform the late medieval canon. Rudolf's work deserves particular attention because it includes remarkable examples of medieval multilingualism, tolerance, and multiculturality. The poet developed new aesthetic and ethical values, and presented an innovative relationship between a humble yet intelligent and compassionate individual and God by introducing, as his protagonist, a Cologne merchant, who supersedes even the Emperor Otto in his religious devotion, humbleness, and goodness. Finally, Der guote Gerhart is clearly based on an eleventh-century Jewish narrative by Rabbi Nissim, though we cannot yet explain the lines of transmission from the Judeo-Arabic text to the Middle High German romance.

24. Faust : a tragedy : parts one and two [2014]
- Goethe, Johann Wolfgang, author.
- Fully revised edition. - New Haven, Connecticut ; London : Yale University Press, 2014.
- Description
- Book — 1 online resource (496 pages) Digital: data file.
- Summary
-
A classic of world literature, Goethe's Faust is a philosophical and poetic drama full of satire, irony, humor, and tragedy. Martin Greenberg re-creates not only the text's varied meter and rhyme but also its diverse tones and styles-dramatic and lyrical, reflective and farcical, pathetic and coarse, colloquial and soaring. His rendition of Faust is the first faithful, readable, and elegantly written translation of Goethe's masterpiece available in English. At last, the Greenberg Faust is available in a single volume, together with a thoroughly updated translation, preface, and notes. "Greenberg has accomplished a magnificent literary feat. He has taken a great German work, until now all but inaccessible to English readers, and made it into a sparkling English poem, full of verve and wit. Greenberg's translation lives; it is done in a modern idiom but with respect for the original text; I found it a joy to read."-Irving Howe (on the earlier edition).

Michael Kruger is a major figure in modern German poetry, one of its great editors and leading practitioners. In 1993 Carcanet published Diderot's Cat, Michael Kruger's original Selected Poems, which drew on thirteen collections. This new edition, in German and English, incorporates portions of that book with selections from five later books, translated by Karen Leeder and Richard Dove. Introducing Diderot's Cat, Dove declared, 'If the recent German Zeitgeist could speak, it might sound a good deal like Michael Kruger.' For his American editor and publisher the poet Stanley Moss he is 'a self-made oracle of various cultures. His poetry - teaches us how to walk in the night - '.

Volume 1 of Selected Plays presents selections from the beginning of August Strindberg's career, before his period of psychotic attacks in the 1890s. Master Olof (1872) is a historical drama set in early Reformation Sweden, influenced by Ibsen and Shakespeare. Two of his most produced plays today, The Father (1887) and Miss Julie (1888), are examples of his naturalistic plays. Strindberg described Creditors (1888), a tragicomedy, as his "most mature work." The Stronger (1889), a playlet, is a favorite in acting classes. Playing with Fire (1893) is one of his few comedies. These plays deal with Strindberg's preoccupation with power struggles and sexual warfare.
