This book presents G. A. Cohen's Gifford Lectures, delivered at the University of Edinburgh in 1996. Focusing on Marxism and Rawlsian liberalism, Cohen draws a connection between these thought systems and the choices that shape a person's life. In the case of Marxism, the relevant life is his own: a communist upbringing in the 1940s in Montreal, which induced a belief in a strongly socialist egalitarian doctrine. The narrative of Cohen's reckoning with that inheritance develops through a series of sophisticated engagements with the central questions of social and political philosophy. In the case of Rawlsian doctrine, Cohen looks to people's lives in general. He argues that egalitarian justice is not only, as Rawlsian liberalism teaches, a matter of rules that define the structure of society, but also a matter of personal attitude and choice. Personal attitude and choice are, moreover, the stuff of which social structure itself is made. Those truths have not informed political philosophy as much as they should, and Cohen's focus on them brings political philosophy closer to moral philosophy, and to the Judeo-Christian ethical tradition, than it has recently been.

The collapse of communist governments in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union requires a major rethink of many sociological theories of social integration and change. Drawing on a range of social theory, this text offers a comparative analysis of the democratic revolutions, combining historical understanding with accounts of the crisis in communism in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Russia. The author identifies contradictions within Soviet societies, developing a theory of crisis management that accounts for both the survival of the system over several decades and for its eventual failure. The social structure of Soviet systems is analyzed in relation to debates in sociological theory over legitimation, social integration, social movements and modernity. The author examines new forms of class, political and national identity in post-socialist Europe, demonstrating how political conflicts are related to economic transformation, especially the emergence of "nomenklatura capitalism", and asks whether sufficient conditions exist for the stabilization of democratic citizenship? This text comparatively analyzes the communist and post-communist experiences of a number of East European countries in the light of a critical examination of the broad issues of social theory and modernity.

Stuart Hall's work has been central to the formation and development of cultural studies as an international discipline. This is a collection of writings by and about Stuart Hall, and provides a representative selection of his writings on cultural studies and its concerns: the relationship with Marxism; postmodernism and "New Times" in cultural and political thought; the development of cultural studies as an international and post-colonial phenomenon; and Hall's engagement with urgent and abiding questions of race, ethnicity and identity.
