"Romani Women in Canada: Spectrum of the Blue Water is grounded upon Romani women's lived experience as writers, essayists, visual artists, and activists. Reflecting the panoply of women's voices, the book links everyday experience and a social critique of the factors that enable and constrain women's lives. Through incisive creativity, pragmatic action, and affective networks, the book is a consolidation of diverse expressions of agency and collectivity. Sharing a will to advance the dignity of women's lives, the contributors are as plural as their subject matter. Canadian Romani women are impressively diverse in their attachments, status, beliefs, and identities. The chapters in this book illustrate this multiplicity by traversing creative practices and writing motifs. Contributors are visual artists, fiction and non-fiction writers, poets, scholars, and essayists. Reflecting the breadth of contributors' creative genres, the book is eclectic in content with multiple forms of writing and images. Photographs of visual art and black-and-white portraits of Canadian Romani women will complement the written textual components."-- Provided by publisher.

- Summary
-
Follow George Eli, an American Gypsy, as he turns his camera on the secret life of his Romani culture. As we see through his 8mm family footage, growing up Gypsy was "a pretty good life-" carefree and lawless. Eli's journey begins when his two sons ask "what does it mean to be a Gypsy?" He has no clear answer beyond what he's learned from movies and TV. Eli and his sons begin a quest for the truth. City by city, the roots of old ways begin to reveal themselves as an intricate tapestry of tradition - and oppression.

25. The Romani movement : minority politics and ethnic mobilization in contemporary Central Europe [2006]
- Vermeersch, Peter, 1972-
- New York : Berghahn Books, 2006.
- Description
- Book — xiv, 261 p. ; 24 cm.
- Summary
-
The collapse of communism and the process of state building that ensued in the 1990s have highlighted the existence of significant minorities in many European states, particularly in Central Europe. In this context, the growing plight of Europe's biggest minority, the Roma (Gypsies), has been particularly salient. Traditionally dispersed, possessing few resources and devoid of a common "kin state" to protect their interests, the Roma have often suffered from widespread exclusion and institutionalized discrimination. Politically underrepresented and lacking popular support amongst the wider populations of their host countries, the Roma have consequently become one of Europe's greatest "losers" in the transition towards democracy. Against this background, the author examines the recent attempts of the Roma (Gypsies) in Central Europe and their supporters to form a political movement and to influence domestic and international politics. On the basis of first-hand observation and interviews with activists and politicians in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, he analyzes connections between the evolving state policies towards the Roma and the recent history of Romani mobilization. In order to reach a better understanding of the movement's dynamics at work, the author explores a number of theories commonly applied to the study of social movements and collective action.
