Recent conflicts in the Punjab and elsewhere have brought the Sikhs considerable attention from both scholars and the media. There has been particular interest in the cultural and social life of Sikh communities in the United States and Canada. Until now, however, materials on the subject have been either unavailable or found only in widely scattered sources This book presents a guide to the existing literature, providing access to published and unpublished material in both English and Panjabi and bringing together a broad spectrum of material that will be of use to both journalists and scholars. This bibliography offers annotated listings of books, official and semi-official reports, dissertations, journal and newspaper articles, and films and videos. Arranged by subject, it covers the history of migration, educational issues, politics, religion and community life. A section of Panjabi language and literature contains entries for Sikh writers living in North America. A brief discussion of each author is included, together with a list of principal publications.

First published in 1993, this is a new revised and substantially expanded edition of a classic African studies reference work that evaluates the leading sources of information (other than bibliographies) on Africa South of the Sahara published in English and French, and in a number of other European languages. The first edition of the book was the winner of the UK Library Association's Besterman Medal for 1993, awarded annually for an outstanding bibliography. This new second edition contains 3,600 for the most part annotated entries, covering encyclopaedias, dictionaries, directories, handbooks, atlases and gazetteers, almanacs, yearbooks, topographic reference sources, directories of organizations, as well as biographical and statistical sources. Each title - most of them personally examined by the compiler - is described and analysed for content. Following a general section on Africa as a whole (with sub-divisions by special subjects), material is arranged under broad regions of Africa, and then by individual countries. "Africa: A Guide to Reference Material" can function at different levels: it facilitates rapid access to specific sources for an enquirer seeking to track down information, and it is also intended to provide additional information on the sources listed for both librarians and researchers who wish to be informed about the circumstances of compilation, and the strengths and weaknesses of the resulting title. The book is extensively cross-referenced throughout and contains an author and title index, and a separate subject index with expanded coverage to accommodate the increased subject range of this new edition. In addition to including a diverse range of new reference material that has appeared in print format since 1992, this new edition now also lists a substantial number of electronic resources, which are critically reviewed and evaluated. Entirely new sections include a selection of the principal reference sources in the biological and earth sciences, especially on flora and fauna, and on biology, habitat, and geology. A major new feature in the 2nd edition is the citation of a wide range of reviews and, for some of the major resources, references to articles and reports about their compilation. In all some 700 reviews are noted from over 80 journals - covering the leading Africanist and professional library journals ("Choice", "American Reference Books Annual", "Reference Reviews"), as well as a number of specialist journals in other disciplines - with brief quotations from the reviews and an indication if they were either particularly enthusiastic or particularly critical.
