Since the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, many Middle Eastern analysts have come to view Islamism as the wave of the future in Arab politics. However, the post-revolution revival of Islamism as a significant political opposition in Arab societies has not resulted in the widespread emergence of Islamic regimes. Ibrahim A. Karawan argues that, although Islamists - both political and militant - are likely to remain a relevant opposition force, it is not a foregone conclusion that their influence will be decisive in shaping the Middle East's political landscape. He asserts that Islamist groups have stagnated in the face of fragmentation, political over-extension, effective state strategies and the poor performance of self-proclaimed Islamic regimes. As a result, Islamists are likely to remain a relevant opposition force, but their influence will probably not be decisive.

With the uncovering of an extensive terrorist network in Southeast Asia, the region has emerged as a major battleground in the global war on terrorism. Events since September 11, 2001 have dramatically altered the environment in the Muslim world and Southeast Asia in particular. However, some of the trends that are influencing the environment in Southeast Asia have been at work since the 1980s. This analysis examines long- and short-term trends in Southeast Asian Islam, the extent of regional terrorist and radical networks, the impact of the global war on terrorism, and measures that could be taken to strengthen secular institutions and moderate and tolerant tendencies within Southeast Asian Islam. Radical Islamists are a minority in all Southeast Asian countries, but they are increasingly influential. The main obstacle to radical political Islam comes from the mainstream moderate Muslim groups themselves. However, particularly in Indonesia, the government and moderate forces have not fully mobilized this latent source of support to regain control of the political and ideological agenda.

One of the problems pervading the study of medieval Islamic technology is the lack of surviving technical treatises. Tradition tended to be handed down by example and by word of mouth, and apprenticeships could last for decades. Fortunately, however, occasional treatises do exist. The treatise 'On swords and their kinds' was written by the 9th century Muslim philosopher Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi. This work was commissioned by a powerful patron of scholarship, the Abbasid caliph Mu'tasim, and the content of the treatise presumably reflects the ruler's general interest in his army and its equipment, and his specific interest in the technical aspects of sword production. In this work, Kindi discusses the difference between iron and steel, distinguishes different qualities of sword blade, and different centers of sword smithing. He refers to the Indian Ocean trade in steel ingots and to the distinctive character of European swords of the period. He includes technical terms used by the makers, and distinguishes swords by their physical features - form, measurements, weight, watered pattern, sculptured details, or inlaid ornaments. This publication includes the text and a translation of Kindi's treatise, and a detailed commentary on the work. The volume also includes a translation of Friedrich Schwarzlose's work on swords, which is based on the hundreds of references to swords in early Arabic poetry. Written in German, this extraordinary compendium of information was first published some 120 years ago; this volume makes it available again, and for the first time in English.

Pakistan's army has dominated the state for most of its 66 years. It has locked the country in an enduring rivalry with India to revise the maps in Kashmir and to resist India's slow but inevitable rise. To prosecute these dangerous policies, the army employs non-state actors under the security of its ever-expanding nuclear umbrella. The Pakistan army started three wars with India over Kashmir in 1947, 1965, and 1999 and failed to win any of them. It has sustained a proxy war in Kashmir since 1989 using Islamist militants, some of whom have now turned their guns against the Pakistani state. The Pakistan army has supported non-Islamist insurgencies throughout India as well as a country-wide Islamist terror campaign that have brought the two countries to the brink of war on several occasions. Despite Pakistan's efforts to coerce India, it has only achieved modest successes. Even though India vivisected Pakistan in 1971, Pakistan continues to see itself as India's equal and demands the world do the same. The tools that the army prefers to use, non-state actors under a nuclear umbrella, has brought international opprobrium upon the country and the army. In recent years, erstwhile proxies have turned their gun on the Pakistani state itself and its peoples. Why does the army persist in pursuing these revisionist policies that have come to imperil the very viability of the state itself, from which the army feeds? This volume argues that the answer lies, at least partially, in the strategic culture of the army. From the army's distorted view of history, the army is victorious as long as can resist India's purported hegemony and the territorial status quo. To acquiesce is defeat. Because the army is unlikely to abandon these preferences, the world must prepare for an ever more dangerous future Pakistan.

The role of military chaplains has changed over the past decade as Western militaries have deployed to highly religious environments such as East Africa, Afghanistan, and Iraq. U.S. military chaplains, who are by definition non-combatants, have been called upon by their war-fighting commanders to take on new roles beyond providing religious services to the troops. Chaplains are now also required to engage the local citizenry and provide their commanders with assessments of the religious and cultural landscape outside the base and reach out to local civilian clerics in hostile territory in pursuit of peace and understanding. In this edited volume, practitioners and scholars chronicle the changes that have happened in the field in the twenty-first century. Using concrete examples, this volume takes a critical look at the rapidly changing role of the military chaplain, and raises issues critical to U.S. foreign and national security policy and diplomacy.

This paper examines Saudi Arabia's security from the Saudi point of view, concentrating on internal challenges to the country's security as well as external threats. It argues that Saudi Arabia should pursue a policy of inclusion "vis-a-vis" Iraq and Iran, rather than simply following the Western emphasis on the exclusion of these states. It also surveys US-Saudi relations in the aftermath of the terrorist strikes of the 11th of September 2001 and concludes that, while relations have been damaged, a continued co-operative relationship is in the interest of both parties.

Salman Rushdie once described Pakistan as a 'poorly imagined country'. Indeed, Pakistan has meant different things to different people since its birth seventy years ago. Armed with nuclear weapons and dominated by the military and militants, it is variously described around the world as 'dangerous', 'unstable', 'a terrorist incubator' and 'the land of the intolerant'. Much of Pakistan's dysfunction is attributable to an ideology tied to religion and to hostility with the country out of which it was carved out - India. But 95 per cent of Pakistan's 210 million people were born after Partition, as Pakistanis, and cannot easily give up on their home. In his new book, Husain Haqqani, one of the most important commentators on Pakistan in the world today, calls for a bold re-conceptualization of the country. Reimagining Pakistan offers a candid discussion of Pakistan's origins and its current failings, with suggestions for reconsidering its ideology, and identifies a national purpose greater than the rivalry with India.
