Forest protection and forestry practices are closely linked to decisions that address measures on climate change, biodiversity and the institutional framework for sustainable development. This rich and multifaceted text documents the progress made in creating the political, economic and social conditions that are necessary for a sustainable and multifunctional use of forest resources. "The Forestry Compendium" is the multimedia tool for identification, learning about and selecting specific tree species for trials. Drawing on maps, pictures and other information sources it provides a full species picture. The user-friendly interface also gives you a fast and targeted search.

The authors discuss initiative to promote and enhance sustainable forestry in temperate countries. While concerns about tropical deforestation are considerable, temperate forests account for the vast majority of the world's roundwood production and most global trade in wood and paper. Improving forest sustainability in such regions is imperative both economically and environmentally. This text illustrates how far nations have come and how far they still need to go in that effort. The authors describe how temperate nations address forest sustainability, discussing recent developments affecting forestry and trade. Their compilation of international data on forest practices and regulation provides a comparative perspective as they analyze the effect of institutional changes (for example, new laws) on land management. The volume assesses how national forestry industries are adapting to new laws and policies in the face of new realities in production and markets, particularly in the context of international trade and global competition. Sustainability policy and performance are profiled for eight timber-exporting or major wood-using temperate nations: the USA, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Germany, France, New Zealand and Chile. The authors also assess the possible effects on each nation of various criteria for sustainability.

Drawing on a host of international case-studies, this detailed book examines the interactions between forestry and environmental change, from a social, economic and political perspective. It presents novel insights into little-studied topics such as the influence of forest reserves on timber prices, the relationship between forestry and aboriginal populations, and the issues facing forests in transition countries. It also brings together the latest thinking on a wide range of topics from deforestation in temperate and tropical forests to social revolutions in forest management.

There is a great concern about the sustainability of forestry and the contribution of private forestry towards this aim. It is therefore important to develop effective policies to support or shape private forestry. This book includes a selection of revised papers from a conference held in Atlanta in March 2001. The main subjects covered include: the emergence of a new paradigm for public involvement in private forestry; the challenges of sustainability; certification programmes; country experiences from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia.

There is an ongoing debate over the future of the Amazon in Brazil. Part of this debate involves the question of whether or not it is possible to ensure development in the region while conserving its immense natural heritage. This report adds to the discussion of land use in the Brazilian Amazon. It analyses the harmful effects of increasing levels of rainfall on agricultural settlement and productivity. The aim of this report is to assist decision-makers, civil society, and the private sector in their attempts to ensure that natural resources will be maintained in such a way that best maximises their social and environmental value.
