From his days working as a geology student on the Sperrgebiet coast of Namibia, the author tells how his experience of the wild parts of the continent developed into a love-affair with Africa that would never leave him. Once graduated he chose to go exploring for copper in the Kalahari of Botswana, from where he would return to South West Africa (Namibia) again and again and travel the length and breadth of his native South Africa. Nearly four years exploring for base metals in Brazil were enough to convince him that his roots were deep in the substrate of Africa. He returned home to buy a farm in the Franschhoek valley, supplementing his income by consulting, mainly in diamonds in the Northern Cape. Even after marrying he still itched to see the world and returned to South America, this time Chile, where two children were born to him and Sue. In his two years there he searched for copper and gold from the high Andean foothills to the fiords of the Magellan region and the islands of Tierra del Fuego. Back in South Africa he turned his hand to writing books in the field of popular geology. Geological Journeys, Geology off the beaten track and Box of Rocks have all been best sellers, with sales continuing to tick over, and The Extraordinary World of Diamonds sold out but was not reprinted. While not writing, short-term consulting assignments took him deep into the Africa he loves - Mozambique, Angola, DRC, Ethiopia, Uganda, Mauritania, Gabon and Tanzania - as well as back to South America, where he spent eight months in Guyana prospecting for gold in the rain forest. Through a life of travelling, farming and writing, the author realised none of it would have been possible but for the grace of God. He saw that he had been blessed time and time again, coming ultimately to the deep faith that continues to sustain him. Threads of history and geography weave through the narrative and humorous anecdotes abound. The author's love of God, Africa and his family, though, will leave the most enduring memory

Abbiamo voluto dedicare la copertina degli Atti del XL Convegno SISFA, tenutosi on line nel settembre 2020, al superamento della separazione tra le due culture, un superamento che è alle radici della nostra disciplina e della nostra passione sia per la "storia" sia per la "fisica". Abbiamo scelto un'immagine dell'Hortus Deliciarum composto tra il 1169 ed il 1175 da Herrad von Landsberg (c.1125-1195) badessa, dal 1167 in poi, dell'abbazia di Hohenbourg (Monte Saint Odile) in Alsazia. Il superamento della separazione tra le due culture è alle origini delle vicende che negli anni '60 e '70 hanno portato alla nascita del Gruppo Nazionale di Storia della Fisica, poi SISFA, nel 1981
È ancora un tema importante per la nostra disciplina. I contributi al XL Convegno sono stati inquadrati secondo i classici temi. Si parte da un ricordo di Salvo D'Agostino (1921-2020), uno dei pionieri della nostra disciplina in Italia, amico e collega di molti di noi, e dalla commemorazione di Augusto Righi (1850-1920) nel centenario della morte, per passare poi a ricerche specifiche di storia della fisica, di filosofia della fisica, di storia della fisica per la didattica, e infine alla rilevanza della strumentazione e della museologia scientifica. Renowned evolutionary biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant have produced landmark studies of the Galápagos finches first made famous by Charles Darwin. In How and Why Species Multiply, they offered a complete evolutionary history of Darwin's finches since their origin almost three million years ago. Now, in their richly illustrated new book, 40 Years of Evolution, the authors turn their attention to events taking place on a contemporary scale. By continuously tracking finch populations over a period of four decades, they uncover the causes and consequences of significant events leading to evolutionary changes in species.The authors used a vast and unparalleled range of ecological, behavioral, and genetic data--including song recordings, DNA analyses, and feeding and breeding behavior--to measure changes in finch populations on the small island of Daphne Major in the Galápagos archipelago. They find that natural selection happens repeatedly, that finches hybridize and exchange genes rarely, and that they compete for scarce food in times of drought, with the remarkable result that the finch populations today differ significantly in average beak size and shape from those of forty years ago. Princeton University's Elias Stein was the first mathematician to see the profound interconnections that tie classical Fourier analysis to several complex variables and representation theory.
