Reworlding Art History highlights the significance of contemporary Southeast Asian art and artists, and their place in the globalized art world and the internationalizing field of ¿́¿contemporary art¿́¿. In the light of the region¿́¿s modern art history, the book surveys this relatively under-examined area of contemporary art which first found broad international recognition in the 1990s. Traced here are significant exhibitions that featured contemporary Southeast Asian art and brought it to regional and international attention. Examined are seminal foundational art histories, and dominant methods and thematic frameworks for engaging with Southeast Asian art. Art Against the Law launches the new Chicago Social Practice History series, edited by Mary Jane Jacob and Kate Zeller in the Department of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). In 1968, Chicago made headlines for the ferocity of its police response to protesters at the Democratic National Convention, prompting outrage in the art world. Some artists pulled their shows from the city and called for a boycott until the mayor left office. But others responded artistically, creating new works and even full exhibitions in reaction to the political and social issues raised by the summer's events. Despite the city's sometimes notorious political and social history, art practices that challenge authority have thrived in Chicago. Art Against the Law examines the creative tactics of the city's activist artists and their ways of addressing the broad definitions of the law - from responses to excessive policing to inequities in public policy. These include creative forms of protest, rebellion against the law through illegal art practices, and using the political system itself as an art medium to alter existing laws. The essays and conversations in this volume also address the boundaries between art and creative activism and question whether lines should be drawn at all. Through these texts and interviews, Art Against the Law proves that creative imagination can be formidable in challenging the status quo.

In this book, McMahon argues that a reading of Kant's body of work in the light of a pragmatist theory of meaning and language (which arguably is a Kantian legacy) leads one to put community reception ahead of individual reception in the order of aesthetic relations. A core premise of the book is that neo-pragmatism draws attention to an otherwise overlooked aspect of Kant's "Critique of Aesthetic Judgment, " and this is the conception of community which it sets forth. While offering an interpretation of Kant's aesthetic theory, the book focuses on the implications of Kant's third critique for contemporary art. McMahon draws upon Kant and his legacy in pragmatist theories of meaning and language to argue that aesthetic judgment is a version of moral judgment: a way to cultivate attitudes conducive to community, which plays a pivotal role in the evolution of language, meaning, and knowledge.

The guiding theme of these essays by aesthetician, musician, and Santayana scholar Morris Grossman is the importance of preserving the tension between what can be unified and what is disorganized, random, and miscellaneous. Grossman described this as the tension between art and morality: Art arrests a sense of change and yields moments of unguarded enjoyment and peace; but soon, shifting circumstances compel evaluation, decision, and action. According to Grossman, the best art preserves the tension between the aesthetic consummation of experience and the press of morality understood as the business of navigating conflicts, making choices, and meeting needs. This concern was intimately related to his reading of George Santayana. The best philosophy, like the best art, preserves the tension between what can be ordered and what resists assimilation, and Grossman read Santayana as exemplifying this virtue in his embrace of multiple perspectives. Other scholars have noted the multiplicity or irony in Santayana's work, but Grossman was unique in taking such a style to be a substantive part of Santayana's philosophizing.

Before the foundation of academies of art in London in 1768 and Philadelphia in 1805, most individuals who were to emerge as artists trained in workshops of varying degrees of relevance. Easel painters began their careers apprenticed to carriage, house, sign or ship painters, whilst a few were placed with those who made pictures. Sculptors emerged from a training as ornamental plasterers or carvers. Of the many other trades in a position to offer an appropriate background were `limning', staining, engraving, surveying, chasing and die-sinking. In addition, plumbers gained the right to use oil painting and, for plasterers, the application of distemper was an extension of their trade. Central to the theme of this book is the notion that, for those who were to become either painters or sculptors, a training in a trade met their practical needs. This `training' was of an altogether different nature to an `education' in an art school. In the past, prospective artists were offered, by means of apprenticeships, an empirical rather than a theoretical understanding of their ultimate vocation. James Ayres provides a lively account of the inter-relationship between art and trade in the late 17th to early 19th centuries, in both Britain and North America. Ever since Plato expelled the poets from his ideal state, the ethics of art has had to confront philosophy's denial of art's morality. In Art before the Law, Ruth Ronen proposes a new outlook on the ethics of art by arguing that art insists on this tradition of denial, affirming its singular ethics through negativity. Ronen treats the mechanism of negation as the basis for the relationship between art and ethics. She shows how, through moves of denial, resistance, and denouncement, art exploits its negative relation to morality. While deception, fiction, and transgression allegedly locate art outside morality and ethics, Ronen argues they enable art to reveal the significance of the moral law, its origins, and the idea of the good. By employing the thought of Freud and Lacan, Ronen reconsiders the aesthetic tradition from Plato through Kant and later philosophers of art in order to establish an ethics of art. "En 1970, dans les réserves du Musée d'art de la Rhode Island School of Design à Providence, Andy Warhol prépare avec ses collaborateurs le troisième volet de l'exposition Raid the Icebox. Loin de son personnage de dandy aux cheveux platinés et au visage fardé, le pape du Pop art est montré dans un rôle que l'on connaît peu de lui et que pourtant bien des artistes après lui assumeront : celui de commissaire d'exposition. Aujourd'hui, nous sommes habitués à ce que des plasticiens, des écrivains, des cinéastes, des stylistes, et même des joueurs de football, soient invités à mettre en scène des oeuvres conservées dans un musée. Nous ne sommes pas davantage surpris de voir des artistes exposer leurs pairs, diriger des manifestations artistiques internationales, s'associer à des curateurs de profession ou, à l'inverse, être les commissaires de leurs propres expositions. L'artiste serait-il devenu un nouveau professionnel de l'art ou, comme l'aurait dit Marcel Broodthaers, un "administrateur culturel" ? À vrai dire, les choses sont plus complexes car cette figure de l'artiste commissaire, désormais si influente, reste profondément ancrée dans un système de valeurs et d'exigences qui, depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, oscille entre le compromis et la transgression, entre le souci d'être à la fois dans l'institution et hors d'elle. La visée du présent ouvrage est précisément de montrer comment la figure de l'artiste commissaire s'est imposée au gré d'une histoire longue et complexe qui tient tant aux diverses stratégies déployées par les créateurs qu'aux transformations progressives du paysage institutionnel de l'art. "Célèbre en son temps, qualifié d'"excellent peintre" par ses contemporains. Baptiste Pellerin n'a cependant connu qu'une gloire éphémère. Les historiens de la peinture du XVIIe siècle ayant déjà oublié son nom, une grande partie de son oeuvre dessiné fut attribuée au graveur Étienne Delaune, à qui il avait régulièrement fourni des modèles. Ce livre a pour objet de reconstituer sa carrière et de la replacer dans le milieu artistique parisien de la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle. À partir de 1549, il exécuta des travaux pour le Roi. Il participa aussi au décor de deux des plus beaux livres enluminés du règne de Henri II, les Heures Gouffier et les Heures de Montmorency. Il collabora à l'entrée de Charles IX dans la capitale en 1571, et jusqu'à sa mort, en 1575, travailla pour les commanditaires les plus divers, du simple artisan à l'entourage royal. Ce fut un artiste prolifique : parmi les pièces qui nous sont parvenues et dont on peut lui donner la conception, on trouve aussi des vitraux, des éléments d'armure, des jetons et médailles et de nombreuses gravures. De plus, quantité d'oeuvres disparues nous sont connues au stade du projet grâce à ses dessins, dans des domaines où seule une infime proportion de la production est conservée, comme la tapisserie, l'orfèvrerie et la joaillerie. Aucun autre peintre français de cette époque ne peut se prévaloir d'une telle influence sur l'art de la capitale à la Renaissance."--P. [4] of cover.

"Fondateur du musée de Port-Royal des Champs, spécialiste de Philippe de Champaigne, Bernard Dorival a été également historien de l'art du XXe siècle, acteur incontournable dans la constitution des collections du Musée National d'Art Moderne. Bernard Dorival est issu d'une famille de collectionneurs dont certaines pièces forment le premier noyau de sa collection : Champaigne, Sellaio, Millet, Boudin, Monet, Redon... Il entreprend d'acheter les oeuvres d'artistes contemporains dont il défend la production dans des livres et des articles. Ses fonctions au sein des musées de France l'ont amené à rencontrer les plus grands créateurs de son époque et lui ont permis de nouer des relations étroites avec bon nombre d'entre eux. Il a vu leurs premières oeuvres, il a accompagné leur éclosion, il les a aidés dans leurs moments de doute, il les a soutenus en achetant leurs peintures et sculptures et en faisant entrer leurs oeuvres dans les collections publiques. Dominic McIver Lopes articulates and defends a 'buck passing theory of art', namely that a work of art is nothing but a work in one of the arts. Having traced philosophical interest in theories of art to a reaction to certain puzzle cases of avant-garde art, he argues that none of the theories that have dominated philosophy since the 1960s adequately copes with these works. Whereas these theories have reached a dialectical impasse wherein they reiterate, and cannot resolve, disagreement over the puzzle cases, the buck passing theory illuminates the radical provocations of avant-garde art. In addition, when supplemented by a systematic framework for crafting theories of the individual arts, the buck passing theory grounds our empirical inquiries into the arts as well as our practices of appreciation and art criticism. Lopes seeks to model the diverse strategies employed by humanists and social and behavioural scientists who study the different arts. He gives the specificity of each art form a central role in our appreciative endeavours, and yet he stresses the continuity of the arts with similar, non-art activities such as fashion design, sports and games, cuisine, nature appreciation, and non-literary writing.

British Models of Art Collecting and the American Response - Reflections Across the Pond presents fourteen essays by distinguished art - and cultural - historians. Collectively, they examine points of similarity and difference in the approaches to art collecting practiced in Britain and the United States. Unlike most of their Continental European counterparts, the English and Americans have historically been exceptionally open to collecting the art made by and for other cultures. At the same time, they developed a tradition of opening private collections to a public eager for educational and cultural advancement. Approximately half the essays examine the trends and market forces that dominated the British art collecting scene of the nineteenth century, such as the Orleans sale and the shift away from aristocratic collections to those of the new urban merchant class. The essays that focus on American collectors use biographical sketches of collectors and dealers, as well as case studies of specific transactions to demonstrate how collectors in the United States embraced and embellished on the British model to develop their own, often philanthropic approach to art collecting.
