2. Bejeweled : the world of ethical jewelry [2019]
- Roderick, Kyle, author.
- New York : Rizzoli International Publications inc., 2019
- Description
- Book — 223 pages : illustrations (colour) ; 29 cm
- Summary
-
Ethically sourced, sustainably mined gems and metals are increasingly sought after in today s luxury jewelry market. Buying and wearing ethical jewelry has become a priority for consumers in the wake of Charles Leavitt s insightful 2006 movie Blood Diamond, which told how conflict diamonds fund civil wars. Bejeweled is the first book to authoritatively cover this timely subject. Profiling leading international designers who are at the forefront of the ethical jewelry movement, this beautifully photographed book examines how the ancient art of jewelry making is powering a green revolution in chic jewelry for everyone. Included are the London-based Pippa Small, an early adopter of Fairtrade gold who works with local artisans in fabricating her one-of-a-kind pieces; Dewey Nelson, a Native American Hopi who works in reclaimed silver incorporating 1,000 year-old tribal motifs; and Loren Nicole whose jewelry features intricate hand-carved gemstones and pure gold alloyed in the same formula used by ancient Roman goldsmiths. Illustrated with exquisite photographs of individual pieces, featured both alone and on celebrities who are turning the Red Carpet green by wearing ethically sourced jewelry or on celebrities such as Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore, this luxurious book is for jewelry lovers and design fans.

3. Contemporary jewellery in Portugal : from the avant-garde of the 1960's to the early 21st century [2019]
- Filipe, Cristina, author.
- Stuttgart, Germany : Arnoldsche Art Publishers, [2019]
- Description
- Book — x, 407 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), portraits ; 25 cm
- Summary
-
In this book, Cristina Filipe offers a critical examination, from a social and art historical perspective, of some of the artists and contexts that contributed to the transformations in Portuguese jewellery from the vanguard of the 1960s to the early twenty-first century - a decisive period in which the term 'jewellery' itself was redefined. In addition, Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal contextualises the international scene, reflecting on how Portuguese artists responded to these external influences. What jewellery was made? Who made it? What were the underlying trends and creative references? These are some of the questions that this book seeks to answer through the analysis of artist interviews and exhaustive factual research, accompanied by a visual narrative mirroring the changes in contemporary jewellery in Portugal.

4. Daniel Brush : jewels sculpture [2019]
- Brush, Daniel, artist.
- New York, NY : Rizzoli Electa, 2019.
- Description
- Book — 255 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 31 cm
- Summary
-
A unique figure in the world of contemporary art, Daniel Brush is in equal measure artist and craftsman. Over the course of forty years, Brush has created an unparalleled body of work, whose scope ranges from large-scale abstract drawings to sculptures in steel, aluminum, and gold. Collected here are more than 150 objects that bring to the fore Brush s astonishing work with jewels. Far from the products of the world of commercial jewelry, these are jewel-encrusted objects of virtue and fantasy that reflect not just the artist s rigorous personal aesthetic and mastery of technique, but his lifelong fascinations with philosophy and Asian thought, and his exhaustive knowledge of the history of precious stones. With photography made of the objects in situ inside Brush s studio in New York City, this book presents not only a catalog of his jewel work to date, but also an ethereal portrait of the artist himself. Housed in a slipcase, with photographs by Takaaki Matsumoto and an illuminating text by Vivienne Becker, this is an intimate study of the work of a master artist and a beautiful object in itself.

- Urla, Liza, author, photographer.
- Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK : ACC Art Books Ltd, [2018]
- Description
- Book — 1 volume (unpaged) : color illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
Did you know that jewellery predates clothes? The oldest known piece is a set of 100, 000-year-old beads, made from Nassarius shells. Liza Urla advises us not to look at the eyes when meeting a new person, but instead to look at their jewellery. She describes it as the ultimate means of self-expression, essential to our identification as humans. "Jewellery is our armour, " she says, "and precious stones our amulets". In this book, she journeys from continent to continent, chronicling the pieces that capture her imagination and her heart. Although many of the pictures are from the street, defining the wearer's style on the day they were taken, Urla has been lucky enough to access people's personal jewellery boxes. As she says, the best pieces are always in private collections. Urla's favourite finds are presented alongside her own jewellery styling, in collaboration with various designers from the jungles of Brazil, the beaches of Mexico, or the streets of London, NYC, Paris or Moscow.

- Enduring splendor (Fowler Museum at UCLA)
- Los Angeles : Fowler Museum at UCLA, [2017]
- Description
- Book — 135 pages : color illustrations, color map ; 26 cm
- Summary
-
Enduring Splendor focuses on the rich and diverse silver jewelry traditions of India's Thar Desert region, stretching across the western states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. These traditions are considered against the background of the five-thousand-year history of jewelry making across the vast Indian Subcontinent. Drawing on recent field research carried out in the city of Jaisalmer, a thriving center of contemporary jewelry production, Enduring Splendor explores for the first time the life and work of four sonis (silversmiths or goldsmiths). To contextualize this recent production, numerous illustrations of very fine examples of ninteenth- and twentieth-century jewelry types that are still worn are included. These objects have been borrowed from the Ronald and Maxine Linde Collection of Jewelry and Ritual Arts of India, part of a promised gift to UCLA, where it will find its future home with the Fowler Museum. The Linde Collection is one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Indian jewelry in the world. This volume highlights elaborate rural styles rendered in silver as well as selected ornate examples, largely associated with the elite, made with gold and gemstones.

- Flore. English
- Mauriès, Patrick, 1952- author.
- London : Thames and Hudson, 2017.
- Description
- Book — 127 pages : color illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
Flowers have long been a source of inspiration for jewelers, many of whom have sought to capture their transient beauty in glittering gemstones and precious metals. In the 17th and 18th centuries, flowers were imitated in enamel or used as motifs for elaborate gemstone bodice ornaments. Brooches, pendants and rings took the form of bouquets or flower baskets. The stylized blooms of the Empire style were followed by the highly naturalistic blossoms of the later 19th century. Flowers continued to flourish in the sinuous shapes of Art Nouveau, the geometric designs of Art Deco and the sculptural simplicity of modernism, with great artists including Rene Lalique and Georges Fouquet constantly reworking nature's forms for their style-conscious clientele. Now, contemporary designers such as Claude Lalanne, Lorenz Baumer and JAR continue to create floral jewelry for today's trendsetters. The floral pieces in this book have all been selected from the magnificent jewelry collection of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and range from the 17th century to the present day. Beautifully photographed by renowned photographer Jean-Marie del Moral, these intricate works of art will delight all lovers of jewelry and nature.

26. The Jazz Age : American style in the 1920s [2017]
- Coffin, Sarah D., author.
- Cleveland, OH : The Cleveland Museum of Art, [2017]
- Description
- Book — xix, 379 pages : color illustrations ; 26 cm
- Summary
-
An exhilarating look at Art Deco design in 1920s America, using jazz as its unifying metaphor Capturing the dynamic pulse of the era's jazz music, this lavishly illustrated publication explores American taste and style during the golden age of the 1920s. Following the destructive years of the First World War, this flourishing decade marked a rebirth of aesthetic innovation that was cultivated to a great extent by American talent and patronage. Due to an influx of European emigres to the United States, as well as American enthusiasm for traveling to Europe's cultural capitals, a reciprocal wave of experimental attitudes began traveling back and forth across the Atlantic, forming a creative vocabulary that mirrored the ecstatic spirit of the times. The Jazz Age showcases developments in design, art, architecture, and technology during the '20s and early '30s, and places new emphasis on the United States as a vital part of the emerging marketplace for Art Deco luxury goods. Featuring hundreds of full-color illustrations and essays by two leading historians of decorative arts, this comprehensive catalogue shows how America and the rest of the world worked to establish a new visual representation of modernity.

- Summary

This spectacular collection of nearly 200 jewelled weapons and priceless accoutrements from the Indian subcontinent was assembled over many decades by Sheikh Nasser and Sheikha Hussah al-Sabah for The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait. Produced for aristocratic patrons who valued the arts, these richly decorated edged weapons and other princely objects bear witness to the legendary opulence and refinement of the Indian courts during the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Many incorporate decorative features originating in Central Asia, the Iranian world, China, and even Renaissance Europe, testifying to centuries of trade, travel and warfare. At the same time, these ornate and uniquely Indian weapons are masterpieces of a long and unparalleled tradition of artistic craftsmanship on the subcontinent, displaying distinctive techniques of gemstone setting, hardstone carving, enamelling and blade damascening.

"The Merriweather Post collection offers an enthralling glimpse into one of the most remarkable, and intact, collections of jewelry ever amassed. Spectacular immerses the reader in jewelry history and design, weaving in seminal moments in Post's life as one of the most passionate and confident collectors of jewelry of the twentieth century. There are exquisite pieces by Van Cleef and Arpels; numerous examples by Cartier; contemporary commissions from Harry Winston, George Headley, David Webb, and Fulco di Verdura, and historical pieces such as the Marie Louise Diadem, and the legendary earrings worn by Marie Antoinette on the eve of the French Revolution. Spectacular provides a critical perspective on developments in changing jewelry styles in America and Europe through one woman's unique collection. Fascinating essays highlight special details of the gems and jewels, as well as their sometimes scandalous history. Full of fabulous images and interesting facts this new volume will appeal to anybody who wants to know the story behind some of the most amazing jewels ever created. - Munich : Hirmer : Museum Fünf Kontinente, [2016]
- Description
- Book — 339 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 31 cm
- Summary
-
The catalogue presents for the first time the rich Tibetan artistic heritage through the collection of Michael and Justyna Buddeberg: carpet manufacture, craftwork in metal and the manufacture of furniture. Previously neglected aspects of everyday Tibetan culture are explored and make the catalogue an essential starting point for further research. The Buddeberg collection includes masterpieces of Tibetan art in textile and metal work and presents us with hitherto disregarded asp ects of the Tibetan approach to art. Carpets for sitting on or as a riding accessory played a central role in their traditional culture but have hitherto been neglected in research, as has metal craftwork, which focused on the ornamentation of end knobs on the poles supporting the cultic paintings. The lavishly illustrated catalogue closes this gap and presents together with contributions by acknowledged specialists an in-depth overview of the fields of carpet and textile art, metalwork and furniture production.

- New York, NY : Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., 2016. New York : Distributed to the U.S. trade by Random House, 2016.
- Description
- Book — 255 pages : color illustrations ; 33 cm
- Summary
-
This stunning, glamorously designed survey highlights the artistry, expertise, and inspiration behind the work of today's most fascinating and influential jewelry designers. Breaking out of the rarified world associated with fine jewelry is a set of contemporary designers who combine traditional skills with fresh vision, transforming artistic inspiration into wearable art. Boundless creativity and a sense of playfulness distinguish these jewelers from the pack, skills that result in pieces that are breathtakingly sophisticated and deeply rooted in each designer's singular aesthetic. Focusing on seventeen modern masters from around the world, Jeweler reveals the unique ideas, intricate processes, and inspiration that go into their work. Curated by Stellene Volandes, executive style director of Town and Country, Jeweler introduces readers to designers like the Hemmerles, a jewelry dynasty known for molding materials like copper and aluminum into one-of-a-kind collectibles; Wallace Chan, the Hong Kong wizard of stones whose patented techniques dazzle the mind as well as the wearer; Elena Votsi, an Athens jeweler who remade the Olympic medal, and whose bold metallic pieces are like wearable sculptures; and Lauren Adriana, a London wunderkind poised to become the master of her generation. Through Volandes's vivid profiles and breathtaking images of each jeweler's work, readers are immersed in the passion and craft that make each one a visionary. Jeweler is a stunning portrait of this fascinating niche of design, anointing the designers of today who are making the collectibles of the future.

41. Kadri Mälk : testament [2016]
- Mälk, Kadri.
- Stuttgart : Arnoldsche Art Publishers, c2016
- Description
- Book — 321 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), portraits ; 31 cm
- Summary
-
Every concept, every notion, every emotion that is evoked in the beholder's eye while looking at a piece of art is true, says Kadri Mälk (b. 1958) on her work, falling silent and letting this take effect. Her pieces are poetic and wild, dark, yet never melancholic. Black wood, black hair, black stones and black jet form the light-absorbing foundation of her jewellery objects, punctuated with accents of colour from gemstones and precious metals. The Estonian artist studied jewellery and geology; as professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallin, she brought the Department of Jewellery into the international limelight. She now looks back on an artistic oeuvre that has matured over the years. In Testament Kadri Mälk shows more than just the results of her vast creative production from recent years. Alongside impressive new jewellery pieces and breathtaking detailed photographs, she shares her life story and her philosophy on the emotional relationship between jewellery and wearer

- First edition. - Chicago, Illinois : The Art Institute of Chicago, 2016.
- Description
- Book — 276 pages : color illustrations, color maps ; 32 cm
- Summary

This book commemorates the remarkable gift of over 400 works from the collection of Barbara and David Kipper to the Art Institute of Chicago. These outstanding pieces of jewelry and ritual objects offer a material record of vanishing ways of life. Used as portable forms of wealth, as personal adornment, and in religious practice, they represent a broad spectrum of cultures. The majority comes from the Himalayan region, including Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and Mongolia, and other pieces hail from Afghanistan, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The catalogue showcases stunning works-including delicate amulet boxes, other Tibetan Buddhist artifacts, and ornate Turkmen jewelry-through dramatic photography undertaken specifically for this publication. With five essays placing the objects in the contexts of their native regions, Vanishing Beauty offers a beautiful presentation of creativity and craftsmanship from across Asia.

53. The traditional jewelry of Egypt [2015]
- Fahmy, Azza, author.
- Cairo ; New York : The American University in Cairo Press, 2015.
- Description
- Book — 222 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), color map ; 22 x 25 cm
- Summary
-
For many women of Egypt, their jewelry is their bank-they wear their wealth in their gold. But jewelry in Egypt is also more than mere assets, and its design and manufacture reveal a great array of styles and a high degree of skill and artistry. In this lavishly illustrated book, Azza Fahmy, herself a world-renowned designer of jewelry based on traditional motifs, lays before us an Aladdin's cave of jewelry made in all corners of Egypt over the last one hundred years, collected through her extensive travels throughout the country. From the farms and villages of the Nile Valley and Delta, from the oases of the Western Desert and the mountains and wadis of Sinai and the Eastern Desert, from Nubia in the south, and from the crowded traditional neighborhoods of Cairo is displayed a cornucopia of gold and silver adornment-each area with its own distinctive favored style. Personal seals have been widely employed, and there is even jewelry for special occasions, such as the appeasement of malignant spirits, and for animals. In this completely redesigned edition of her bestselling book, in a new and elegant format, the author not only documents all these varieties and illustrates them with the finest examples, she also describes the techniques and skills involved in their production and the materials used, and recounts her own journey of learning as she apprenticed with the leading master jewelers to become the best known jeweler in Egypt, whose work is worn by world leaders, royalty, and connoisseurs of jewelry around the globe.

- Summary
-
India's rich tradition of jeweled arts has produced extravagant and opulent creations that range from ornaments for every part of the body to ceremonial court objects such as boxes, daggers, and thrones. Starting with the Mughal rulers of India (1526--1858) and continuing to the present day, this artistic practice is characterized by an abundance of costly materials such as gold, ivory, jade, and precious stones of astounding size and quality, which artists have used to create unique and valuable works. Treasures from India presents 60 iconic works from the world-renowned Al-Thani collection, accompanied by a text that introduces readers to their significance within the history of Indian jeweled arts. Included are some of the earliest pieces created for the imperial Mughals in the 16th century, others made for Maharajahs of the 18th through 20th centuries, and later Indian-inspired works created by Cartier in the 20th century. These examples represent the range and scope of the finest expression of the jeweled arts in India, and stand among the highest expressions of Indian culture and artistry.

65. Jewels by JAR [2013]
- Rosenthal, Joel Arthur, artist.
- New York : The Metropolitan Museum of Art, [2013] New Haven : Yale University Press, [2013]
- Description
- Book — 31 pages, 112 unnumbered pages : color illustrations ; 22 cm + 1 sheet.
- Summary
-
Called "the Faberge of our time" by Diane von Furstenberg, Joel A. Rosenthal, who works in Paris under the name JAR, is one of the most acclaimed jewelry designers of the past thirty years. JAR is known for his use of precious and semi-precious stones resplendent with myriad shades of vibrant color and set in organic shapes: one brooch, for instance, features lifelike petals in subtly differentiated hues, made from a thousand pave sapphires and amethysts. The New York Times has described his jewelry as "belligerent, stubborn, audacious, funny, contradictory, " while JAR himself has characterized his work as "somewhere between geometry and a bouquet of flowers." This book, featuring nearly 40 pieces from throughout JAR's career, provides a concise, accessible, elegantly designed retrospective of the best of his jewelry creations, and is the only book of its kind on his work available in English.

- Scarisbrick, Diana.
- New York : Thames & Hudson, 2011.
- Description
- Book — 352 p. : col. ill. ; 24 cm.
- Summary
-
From the Renaisssance to the end of the Belle Epoque, cameo, intaglio and miniature portraits, prized as representations of eminent people or treasured as images of the beloved, have been enriched by jewelled frames in order to wear them or display them as precious objects. Yet while cameo and intaglio portraits have been extensively surveyed, their settings do not seem to have attracted the same attention until now. Here, Diana Scarisbrick draws upon her knowledge of jewelry, painting, history and literature to set the portrait jewels in the context of people's lives, bringing to life five centuries of extraordinary events and personalities, and at the same time illustrating an aspect of the history of jewelry never explored to this degree. "Portrait Jewels" spans over five centuries, beginning with the Medicia and ending just before the fall of the Romanovs in 1917, and features prominent characters from politics, religion, history, literature and the arts, such as Queen Elizabeth I, Popes Clement XII and Pius VII, Voltaire and Lord Byron.

- Description

- Summary
-
The Turkmen people of Central Asia and Iran are revered for their carpets and textiles. Less well known, but equally stunning, is the extraordinary silver jewelry created by Turkmen tribal craftsmen and urban silversmiths throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. This catalogue presents nearly two hundred pieces in glorious detail, ranging from crowns and headdresses to armbands and rings, and featuring accents of carnelian, turquoise, and other stones. Characterized by elegant form, geometric shapes, and delicate openwork, Turkmen jewelry has typically been viewed through an ethnographic rather than an aesthetic lens. By highlighting these objects-which come from one of the most significant private collections of Turkmen ornaments in the world-and placing them in the larger context of Islamic art, this groundbreaking publication elevates the vibrant, monumental pieces from folk art to fine art.
