"The Bedford Hours", one of the most sumptuous Books of Hours ever to have left an illuminator's workshop, is today one of the British Library's greatest treasures. With 1250 elaborate medallions, 38 large-scale miniatures, all decorated with gold leaf, brush gold and frequently also with silver, "The Bedford Hours" is one of the most precious manuscripts of its period. The artist behind the manuscript, known as the Bedford Master, was among the most prolific painters of his day but his identity has remained a mystery. Eberhard Konig's engrossing account is a tale which unfolds toward a number of startlingly original and unexpected conclusions, the key one being that it is extremely likely that he was Haincelin of Haguenau, an artist who had become enlumineur (illuminator) to the dauphin Louis de Guyenne. Louis was associated with a considerable number of major illuminated manuscripts in which the Bedford Master had a hand. Professor Konig has disentangled the sequence of work by extraordinary detective work into the smallest of clues and demonstrates how a medieval masterpiece was actually made.

"A book of hours is a collection of Christian prayers for recitation at different times, 'hours', of the day. Intended for individual use at home, they were simplified versions of the eight periods of daily prayer observed by monks and nuns, from matins in the morning to compline at night ... The 'Bedford book of hours' is an outstanding work of late medieval manuscript art. It was [i.e. some pages were] produced for the wedding of John, Duke of Bedford, to Anne of Burgundy on 13 May 1423. The "Ci nous dit" is an anonymous illuminated manuscript written in French ca. 1320. Its title is derived from the formula which starts each chapter "Ci nous dit" or "Ici on nous dit que." The Mss. are held at the Musée Condé in Chantilly ( Musée Condé ms. 26-27).

"Picturing Kingship" presents the first comprehensive art-historical study of the personal prayerbook of King Louis IX. The book approaches the St. Louis Psalter through a rich range of perspectives and methodologies and positions it within the contexts of its production and use. Not only is the manuscript's production and structure given detailed study, but the king's ways of handling his prayerbook - his habits of reading, looking, and praying - are also set forth in a compelling narrative of his view of his sacred responsibilities as king. In the first half of the book, Stahl investigates the Psalter's physical construction and development within the context of manuscript production in thirteenth-century Paris. The second half looks at the Psalter's thematic and iconographic workings and the role of the king's adviser - Vincent of Beauvais - in the Psalter's shaping. Most important, though, the author delves into the meanings the Psalter might have held for the king, who was a crusader and so devout a Christian that he was canonized by Boniface VIII. Stahl makes it clear that the Psalter, already recognized as one of the true masterworks of thirteenth-century French culture, should also be recognized as a significant force in Louis IX's life and reign.
