The concept of Jihad has been central to many modern conflicts, including that of resistance to US occupation of Iraq and the Palestinian struggle for self-determination. According to the most popular view, Jihad ideology represents a religiously sanctioned aggressive war to propagate or defend faith. However, the meaning of Jihad is not as straightforward as proponents of the clash of civilisations would like it to be. The aim of this book is thus to clarify the meanings of Jihad and the manipulation of its sense since the rise of political Islam during the 1960s. It aims also at understanding the relationship between Jihad, Islam and national and international law.

This is a case study of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). It argues that the ECO region has all the necessary elements for regional integration, however, the ECO has not yet reached its goals due to a postponement of its strategic, political and security decisions and the lack of a common denominator of identity and interests. The argument reinforces the notion that regionalism is not only an economic decision but also a political one which may yield economic dividends to the member states. The book explains the general theoretical nexus between regionalism and security in some of the more successful and well-known regional formations. Then it goes in depth to discuss the political economy and history of the ECO and its various ties with the West. It stresses the political and security decisions needed to mobilize the ECOs resources and improve its efficacy, and analyses regional security of the both the southern and the northern tiers of the ECO in detail, focusing particularly on the situation in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Just war thinking and realism are commonly presumed to be in opposition. If realists are seen as war-mongering pragmatists, just war thinkers are seen as naive at best and pacifistic at worst. Just war thought is imagined as speaking truth to power - forcing realist decision-makers to abide by moral limits governing the ends and means of the use of force. Realist Ethics argues that this oversimplification is not only wrong, but dangerous. Casting just war thought to be the alternative to realism makes just war thinking out to be what it is not - and cannot be: a mechanism for avoiding war. A careful examination of the evolution of just war thinking in the Christian, Islamic, and Hindu traditions shows that it is no stranger to pragmatic politics. From its origins, just war thought has not aimed to curtail violence, but rather to shape the morally imaginable uses of force, deeming some of them necessary and even obligatory. Morkevicius proposes here a radical recasting of the relationship between just war thinking and realism.

The Afghan Taliban are often judged against international norms; what is, however, less known is that they have produced their own set of norms designed to guide their conduct. In this insightful study, Yoshinobu Nagamine examines the Taliban's internal code of conduct, the Layeha. Nagamine analyzes the Layeha in comparison with Islamic Law and international humanitarian law and conducts interviews with Taliban members to understand how they interpret and refer to the Layeha. The results of these interviews give readers an insider's view of the legitimization strategy of the Taliban leadership.
