This study, done within the comprehensive Weberian framework, focuses on religion and social change in Bangladesh through an imaginative use of qualitative as well as quantitative methods of modern social research. It first provides a sociological interpretation of the origin and development of Islam in Bangal using historical and literary works on Bengal. The main contribution is based on two sample surveys conducted by Mrs Banu in 20 villages of Bangladesh and in three areas in the metropolitan Dhaka City. Using these survey data, she gives a sociological analysis of Islamic religious beliefs and practices in contemporary Bangladesh and more importantly, she studies the impact of the Islamic religious beliefs on the socio-economic development and political culture in present-day Bangladesh. She also shows how Islam compares with modern education in social "transforming capacity". This work aims to hels deepen our understanding of the interactions between religious and social changes common to many parts of the Third World.

As the European public sphere becomes increasingly shaped by debates surrounding Islam, this book asks whether it is possible to rethink the public sphere, conceiving of it not as a site of consensus, but as one of antagonism and confrontation. With rich case studies drawn from various sites across Europe, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe examines a range of public controversies, including mosque construction, ritual slaughter, Sharia councils, burqa bans and love and marriage, to address the question of how cases of 'Islamic difference' might be addressed outside the confines of established normative discourses, which focus on freedom of religion, minority rights or multiculturalism. Acknowledging the creative role of dissent, this book explores the manner in which public controversies shed new light on understandings of aesthetics, animal rights, freedom of speech, the uniformity of secular law and modes of individual emancipation.Developing an innovative conceptual framework and elaborating the notion of controversy as a methodological tool, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe draws our attention to the processes of interaction, confrontation and mutual transformation, thereby opening up a new horizon for rethinking difference and pluralism in Europe. This is a book about Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish scholar and preacher, and the movement that he inspired in Turkey and ultimately throughout the world. During the decades of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, he preached to large crowds in mosques and public places throughout Turkey and wrote hundreds of newspaper columns, articles and books espousing his ideas. Gradually, many Turks from all walks of life responded to his ideas of education, modernization, positive relationships with the West and interfaith dialog by establishing dormitories, university preparatory courses and schools in which quality education, especially in the sciences and technology, were buttressed with commitment to Islamic ideals. With the fall of the Soviet Union, his ideas and service projects spread to the former Turkic-Soviet countries and ultimately to western Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, Australia and to Middle Eastern countries. Today, the Gulen-inspired movement has over 1,000 schools in 100 countries on 5 continents. It is a thriving civic movement rooted in moderate Islam and committed to educating youth, fostering interfaith and intercultural dialog, assisting the needy in society and contributing to global peace. Based on interview data and visits to Gulen-inspired institutions in Turkey and in the United States, this book describes the movement with emphasis upon the structure and commitment mechanisms that both demonstrate commitment to the movement as well as simultaneously generating commitment on the part of movement participants.

The debate on varieties of modernity is central to current social theory and research, and this book explores the theme in relation to the culture and society of Turkey. The book focuses on the Kemalist project to create a modern Turkish nation-state, analysing its historical background, the role of concepts of ethnicity and nation, and the configurations of state, society and economy in the new Turkish republic. The author then moves on to examine the relations between Islam and modernity, arguing that both must be understood as open to multiple interpretations rather than seen as monolithic.

Uneasy Military Encounters presents a historically and theoretically grounded political ethnography of the Thai military's counterinsurgency practices in the southern borderland, home to the greater part of the Malay-Muslim minority. Ruth Streicher argues that counterinsurgency practices mark the southern population as the racialized, religious, and gendered other of the Thai, which contributes to producing Thailand as an imperial formation: a state formation based on essentialized difference between the Thai and their others. Through a genealogical approach, Uneasy Military Encounters addresses broad conceptual questions of imperial politics in a non-Western context: How can we understand imperial policing in a country that was never colonized? How is "Islam" constructed in a state that is officially secular and promotes Buddhist tolerance? What are the (historical) dynamics of imperial patriarchy in a context internationally known for its gender pluralism? The resulting ethnography excavates the imperial politics of concrete encounters between the military and the southern population in the ongoing conflict in southern Thailand.
