This collection comprises a wealth of documents relating to land use and development in Shanghai International Settlement, including land assessment schedules (1869-1933), land lists (1871-1937), land regulations and bylaws (1845-1930), as well as a number of documents recording the rules and reports on the running and management of various public works entities in Shanghai. Most of these entities were SMC-affiliated or -linked companies like Shanghai Waterworks Company, Shanghai Power Company, Shanghai Mutual Telephone Company, Shanghai Telephone Company, and Shanghai Electric Construction Company which was responsible for building railways, tramways, and trolley buses. On top of these are several documents on the Shanghai port, industries, shipping and trade, the railway lines connecting Shanghai with Nanking, Hangchow, and Ningbo, and the Chinese Navy's Kiangnan Dockyard which serviced and repaired both Chinese and foreign vessels engaged in the China trade

Public housing at the federal level was introduced in 1937 and was intended to provide public financing of low-cost housing in the form of publicly- managed and owned multifamily developments. This collection includes directives and memoranda related to the Public Housing Administration's policies and procedures. Among the documents are civil rights correspondence, statements and policy about race, labor-based state activity records, local housing authorities' policies on hiring minorities, court cases involving housing decisions, racially-restrictive covenants, and news clippings. This database contains inclusionary housing policies, e.g. ordinances, zoning, or information from General Plans Housing Elements, for cities and counties in California. The database provides summaries of policy characteristics for each city and county. Users may search for these summaries by geographical location, jurisdiction name or by more than 30 other characteristics or criteria. For example, users can use our geographical portal to search for jurisdictions with an inclusionary housing policy within specific counties, regions or the entire state. Alternatively, users could search for inclusionary housing policies based on common characteristics such all jurisdictions with population between 50,000 and 100,000 that have mandatory ordinances, require 15% to 20% of units be affordable to low- and moderate-income households, and allow land dedications or payment of in-lieu fees. In addition, each summary provides a link to the jurisdiction's full policy. A glossary defines key terms.
