- Summary
-
The environment in ecological systems includes both physical parameters and biotic attributes, and is a holocoenotic, dynamically interlinked system. Its investigation requires a dialectical approach which examines the different parts, but integrates the organism and the environment into a dynamic whole. Environment and ecology place emphasis on the real world. Many decisions that directly or indirectly affect the balance of our environment are based on individual, community, state, national ...

- Summary

- Preface: The Farm Story A single chapter overview of the historical timeline of The Farm Community, from its original origins to its current incarnation.
- Chapter 1: Collectivity and Community This chapter will explore the many different ways shared ownership, responsibility and collectivity plays out in the current community.
- Chapter 2: Community, Conflict and Compassion The key to survival and continued existence for any intentional community is its ability to deal with internal conflict. "Working it out" has been a central component to The Farm's way of life since the very beginning and remains a vital part of who we are today. Centered on truth and compassion, each individual's personality, history, attachment and skills can affect the outcome of every encounter. This chapter presents guidelines and examples that anyone can use to assist in their personal interactions.
- Chapter 3: Following the Spiritual Path The Farm was founded as a spiritual community that respected and borrowed from all religions and philosophies. Although the community shied away from a written text that could potentially evolve into ritualized dogma, over the course of 40 years many commonly held principles have emerged. These include forms of communion, sacraments, and essential truths universal to all humans.
- Chapter 4: Governance The Farm's structure and internal government has taken many forms, from loose gatherings to a benevolent dictatorship under the guise of guru, to stratified hierarchies and consensus democracies. This chapter follows the community's historical timeline, illustrating how The Farm's currently manages a complex infrastructure with a population whose core identity and purpose is to question authority.
- Chapter 5: Earning a Living From the very beginning, a primary element of The Farm's philosophy was the principle of Right Livelihood, a Buddhist teaching which states that your work should be seamless with your ideals. The transition from a communal to a private economy placed the responsibility of earning a living back on the individual. Located in one of the poorest counties in Tennessee, 70 miles from the nearest city, made the transition extremely challenging and in many ways came to define who stayed and who left at the time of The Changeover. The spirit of entrepreneurship has allowed The Farm to become a breeding ground for small business and the various nonprofits that provide employment for community members. At the same time, members have also identified skills that translate into income producing work especially suited for a rural lifestyle.
- Chapter 6: Health Care and Midwifery During the communal period, in addition to the midwives The Farm's medical team included doctors, nurses, a lab, pharmacy, even an ambulance staffed 24/7 with emergency medical technicians. Unfortunately, The Farm's vow of poverty, coupled with a rejection of insurance and welfare assistance, almost brought down the community, when a crippling debt to Vanderbilt Hospital resulted in a lean against the land. After the great economic shift in 1983 called "The Changeover, " what remained was The Farm's sense of interdependence and a commitment to personal care based on love and deep friendships. A significant number of the community's members continue to work and serve in the health care field, giving members a greater access to care than typically experienced by people living on their own at the mercy of the modern medical system.
- Chapter 7: Health and Diet From its earliest days The Farm has been a leading example on the value of a healthy lifestyle, and its influence has played a major role in the increasing awareness on the benefits of a plant based diet.
- Chapter 8: Housing and Construction Early on, Farm builders experimented with passive solar design, earth berms, rammed earth and built almost exclusively with recycled materials. The community's Solar School is still the largest passive solar building in the state of Tennessee. On the current Farm, new homes provide examples of the many different approaches to green building.
- Chapter 9: Land and Water The Farm Community's ability to maintain the integrity of its land base is a dynamic achievement, and like no other aspect of its existence, creates the unity that defines its cohesive identity. Human relationships ebb and flow, experience conflict and resolution, are born and fade away, but the spirit of the land endures. Both current and former members identify their connection to the land as a spiritual touchstone. As our world deals with the effects of climate change, including terrible draughts, preservation of this vital resource remains an important concern.
- Chapter 10: The Gate and Membership In an era where "crash pad" was considered almost synonymous with hippy, it may come as some surprise to consider that in the early years , The Farm's gate was perhaps its most critical organizational structure, the one thing that made it possible to continue beyond the first year. The Gate was, and still is, considered the front door to our collective home, which means ideally each person living on The Farm should be as comfortable and safe as if they were inside their own living room.
- Chapter 11: Tribal Cultures As The Farm Community began to establish its own identity by creating something real, it had something to offer native people that went beyond purchasing crafts and colonial empathy. It started by providing midwifery training to women from the Onondaga Nation or Iroquois Confederacy in upstate New York. It grew by leaps and bounds when in 1976, The Farm's relief effort, a nonprofit called Plenty (because there is enough when you share) went to Guatemala, sending over 100 volunteers down to work with the Mayan people rebuilding after a devastating earthquake.
- Chapter 12: Living Green - The Future Farm As we look ahead to the future, it seems clear that the western model of capitalism is collapsing under its own weight as it fails to address the needs of people, the environment and the sustainability of life on our planet. Life in community serves two purposes. For its members, intentional community is a lifeboat, offering a buffer from the instability of economic systems, the breakdown of the nuclear family, and vital elements such as food production. Intentional communities also serve as flagships, leading the way as visible, viable alternatives to mainstream consumerism and corporate dominance over our lives. It has been 40+ years since the caravan of buses pulled on to the land in Tennessee. The Farm has reached middle age. No longer able to ride on the energy and enthusiasm of its idealistic beginnings, The Farm faces the challenge of passing the momentum on to a new generation. Over the next 20 years, the founding members of The Farm will enter their 70'and 80's, placing a greater financial and management burden on those currently under the age of 40 who represent about 1/3 of the community's population. Can The Farm attract enough new people to maintain the population levels it needs to support its massive infrastructure and internal economy? If the past is any indicator, this School of Change will continue its evolution, following a path that will insure its survival for decades to come.

- Summary
-
Although most people prefer not to think about them, hazardous wastes, munitions testing, radioactive emissions, and a variety of other issues affect the quality of land, water, and air in the Land of Enchantment, as they do all over the world. In this book, veteran New Mexico journalist V. B. Price assembles a vast amount of information on more than fifty years of deterioration of the state's environment, most of it hitherto available only in scattered newspaper articles and government reports. Viewing New Mexico as a microcosm of global ecological degradation, Price's is the first book to give the general public a realistic perspective on the problems surrounding New Mexico's environmental health and resources.
