"Dans le cadre de son protectorat sur le Cambodge, la France entreprend de modifier l'organisation politique, sociale, économique du royaume khmer afin de le "moderniser." Elle s'appuie alors sur les concepts de "mission civilisatrice" et de "mise en valeur". Inscrite à l'échelle de la province cambodgienne de Kampong Thom, cette étude cherche en quoi près d'un siècle de présence française a changé la vie de la masse des Cambodgiens, les habitants des campagnes, et fait évoluer les structures de la société entre le milieu du x lx' siècle et l'indépendance en 1953. Elle s'appuie sur les abondantes sources coloniales françaises, confrontées aux sources khmères, afin que le point de vue des Cambodgiens soit pleinement pris en compte. Les problèmes traités couvrent la relation des habitants à leur roi et à l'État, le renforcement de l'intégration du Cambodge à l'économie-monde, l'évolution des productions agricoles et artisanales, les conséquences environnementales de la colonisation, l'abolition de l'esclavage et ses conséquences, les relations entre hommes et femmes, les réformes du bouddhisme theravada, l'introduction de la médecine et de l'école occidentales, les stratégies des élites rurales pour perdurer, la vie quotidienne... "L'histoire contemporaine des Juifs du Maroc est étroitement liée à l'existence de l'Etat d'Israël. Leur condition déplorable aussi. L'image discriminante du juif marocain dans la propagande sioniste devait masquer le régime d'exploitation à outrance des pauvres émigrants juifs marocains qui ont connu en Israël le confinement concentrationnaire dans les déserts où ils furent déposés à la merci de leurs nouveaux maîtres. Ce ne sont pas les Arabes du Maroc qui les ont empêchés de progresser, bien au contraire ils leur avaient offert l'accès aux études supérieures avec des bourses d'études. La principale fonction de toutes les fausses accusations formulées et enseignées contre les Juifs du Maroc s'est opérée au niveau de la stimulation d'attitudes défavorables à l'égard des juifs marocains aussi bien en Israël que dans la diaspora. On se pose la question de savoir si le matériel de propagande toxique contre les Juifs du Maroc par les Ashkénazes ne relève pas des préoccupations de la ligue contre les diffamations. Après toutes leurs souffrances sous la botte ashkénaze, ils sont les seuls autorisés à leur déclarer qu'ils ont fait de leur rêve un cauchemar."--Page 4 of cover.

"16 août 1942 : non loin de la ligne de démarcation, deux enfants ont été cachés, Robert Créange et sa sœur Françoise, alors âgés de 11 et 13 ans. Désespérés d'attendre le retour de leurs parents, ils les voient disparaître dans une voiture allemande. Internés au camp de Drancy, ils seront déportés et assassinés à Auschwitz. Comment survivre à des questions sans réponse ? Comment mener une vie si tôt chargée d'un tel héritage ? Que dire ? Que raconter ? Et pourquoi, pour qui, le faire ? Robert a fait du témoignage de cette douloureuse expérience sa raison de vivre. À tous les moments de sa longue carrière dans l'enseignement et l'éducation, la politique ou l'activité associative, il s'est montré un infatigable partisan de la mémoire. En 2015, il a accepté de confier le récit de sa vie à la sociologue Claire Lévy-Vroelant. Une parenté éloignée mais bien présente rapproche les deux protagonistes. Rompant un long silence intérieur, la situation d'enquête leur a permis d'inventer un espace de parole. Parole courtisée, déclamée ou murmurée dans le trouble et les larmes, parole traçante, glaçante, hilare, pudique, mutine, suivant le fil des souvenirs perdus, retrouvés et reprisés. Many histories of Ancient Greece center their stories on Athens, but what would that history look like if they didn't? There is another way to tell this story, one that situates Greek history in terms of the relationships between smaller Greek cities and in contact with the wider Mediterranean. In this book, author Joshua P. Nudell offers a new history of the period from the Persian wars to wars that followed the death of Alexander the Great, from the perspective of Ionia. While recent scholarship has increasingly treated Greece through the lenses of regional, polis, and local interaction, there has not yet been a dedicated study of Classical Ionia. This book fills this clear gap in the literature while offering Ionia as a prism through which to better understand Classical Greece. This book offers a clear and accessible narrative of the period between the Persian Wars and the wars of the early Hellenistic period, two nominal liberations of the region. The volume complements existing histories of Classical Greece. Close inspection reveals that the Ionians were active partners in the imperial endeavor, even as imperial competition constrained local decision-making and exacerbated local and regional tensions. At the same time, the book offers interventions on critical issues related to Ionia such as the Athenian conquest of Samos, rhetoric about the freedom of the Greeks, the relationship between Ionian temple construction and economic activity, the status of the Panionion, Ionian poleis and their relationship with local communities beyond the circle of the dodecapolis, and the importance of historical memory to our understanding of ancient Greece. The result is a picture of an Aegean world that is more complex and less beholden narratives that give primacy to the imperial actors at the expense of local developments

America's Arab Nationalists focuses in on the relationship between Arab nationalists and Americans in the struggle for independence in an era when idealistic Americans could see the Arab nationalist struggle as an expression of their own values. In the first three decades of the twentieth century (from the 1908 Ottoman revolution to the rise of Hitler), important and influential Americans, including members of the small Arab-American community, intellectually, politically and financially participated in the construction of Arab nationalism. This book tells the story of a diverse group of people whose contributions are largely unknown to the American public. "Angkor fascine : ce nom évoque une ville superbe aux temples impressionnants, enfouie au cœur d'une forêt dense, impénétrable, dévorée par la sylve et révélée à l'Occident au cours de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. De nombreuses capitales se sont succédé là du ixe au mue siècle. Œuvres royales par excellence, intrinsèquement liées à l'exercice du pouvoir, elles illustrent le prestige des souverains, artisans de la grandeur de l'empire khmer. Mais ces vestiges majestueux revêtus de leur gangue végétale, ornés des délicates sculptures des apsaras, gardiennes hiératiques des sanctuaires, conservent une grande part de leur mystère. Anglo-Chinese Encounters Before the Opium War: A Tale of Two Empires Over Two Centuries studies the fascinating encounters between the two historic empires from Queen Elizabeth I's first letter to the Ming Emperor Wanli in 1583, to Lord Palmerston's letter to the Minister of China in 1840. Starting with Queen Elizabeth I's letter to the Chinese Emperor and ending with the letter from Lord Palmerston to the Minister of China just before the Opium War, this book explores the long journey in between from cultural diplomacy to gunboat diplomacy. It interweaves the most known diplomatic efforts at the official level with the much unknown intellectual interactions at the people-to-people level, from missionaries to scholars, from merchants to travelers and from artists to scientists. This book adopts a novel "mirror" approach by pairing and comparing people, texts, commodities, artworks, architecture, ideologies, operating systems and world views of the two empires. Using letters, gifts and traded goods as fulcrums, and by adopting these unique lenses, it puts China into the world history narratives to contextualise Anglo-Chinese relations, thus providing a fresh analysis of the surviving evidence. Xin Liu casts a new light on understanding the Sino-centric and Anglo-centric world views in driving the complex relations between the two empires, and the reversals of power shifts that are still unfolding today. "In 1998, the Belitung, a ninth-century western Indian Ocean-style vessel, was discovered in Indonesian waters. Onboard was a full cargo load, likely intended for the Middle Eastern market, of over 60,000 Chinese Tang-dynasty ceramics, gold, and other precious objects. It is one of the most significant shipwreck discoveries of recent times, revealing the global scale of ancient commercial endeavors and the centrality of the ocean within the Silk Road story. But this shipwreck also has a modern tale to tell, of how nation-states appropriate the remnants of the past for their own purposes, and of the international debates about who owns--and is responsible for--shared heritage. The commercial salvage of objects from the Belitung, and their subsequent sale to Singapore, contravened the principles of the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and prompted international condemnation. "Western observers have long considered communism to be synonymous with Vietnam's modern historical experience. Eager to make sense of the North Vietnamese victory in the Vietnam War, scholars and journalists have spilled much ink on the history of Vietnamese communists. But this preoccupation has obscured the diversity of ideas and experiences that defined Vietnam in the twentieth century, in which communism represented just one of many tendencies. Building a Republican Nation in Vietnam, 1920-1963, posits that republicanism shaped modern Vietnam no less profoundly than communism. Republicans championed representative government, the universal rights of man, civil liberties, and the primacy of the nation. These ideas infused the thinking of Vietnamese reformers, dissidents, and revolutionaries from the 1900s onward, including many men and women who went on to lead the struggle for independence. Republicanism was also one of the chief inspirations for the establishment of the Republic of Vietnam (also known as South Vietnam) in 1955. This interdisciplinary volume brings together eleven essays by historians, political scientists, literary scholars, and sociologists, who make use of fresh sources to study the development of republicanism from the colonial period to the First Republic of Vietnam (1955-1963). This book discusses the nature of China's current international reassertion of itself, and the thinking and attitudes which lie behind it. It argues that the Chinese leadership has a strongly held view of its own high moral authority, which emphasises inclusion, equality and mutual benefits, and that this sense of morality underpins the driving forces for China's foreign policies, the geo-strategic reasoning for outward expansion, China's strategic culture, the idealistic rationalization of China's overseas activities, the overall Chinese worldview, and China's vision of the Chinese world order. Based on original research into both writings for policy-making purposes, which indicate realistic assessments of world politics and of China's international capacity, and also narratives for public consumption, which have less emphasis on self-interest and realpolitik, the book approaches the subject empirically, and not through the lens of any international relations theory. It highlights how China's outward expansion has been characterized mainly by spreading influence through non-use of force, and strategies of "inclusiveness", "co-operation" and "winning without fighting". Once the capital of the five-hundred-year Choson dynasty (1392-1897) and the Taehan Empire (1897-1910), the city of Seoul posed unique challenges to urban reform and modernization under Japanese colonial rule in the early twentieth century, constrained by the labyrinthian built environment of the old Korean capital. Colonial authorities attempted to employ a strategy of "erasure"-monumental Japanese architecture was, for instance, superimposed upon existing palace structures-to articulate to colonized Korean subjects the transition from the pre-modern to the modern, and the naturalization of colonial rule as inevitable historical change. "Guangxi, a region on China's southern border with Vietnam, has a large population of ethnic minorities and a history of rebellion and intergroup conflict. In the summer of 1968, during the high tide of the Cultural Revolution, it became notorious as the site of the most severe and extensive violence observed anywhere in China during that period of upheaval. "Based on a unique set of interviews and British and American documents, this book examines the motives for the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, examines the decision-making inside the Bush administration, and assesses the reasons for the chaotic, bloody, and costly occupation. The attack on America on 9/11 by al Qaeda terrorists transformed the thinking and actions of Bush and his top advisers. Bush conceived the administration's response. Fear, power, and hubris shaped his approach - fear of another attack; pride in American values; and confidence in America's ability to effectuate change. Worried about another attack on American soil - this time with biological or chemical weapons - Bush turned his attention to Iraq because of Saddam Hussein's history with weapons of mass destruction and because of his record of aggression, brutality, and duplicity. To achieve his goals, the American president embraced a strategy of coercive diplomacy. If Iraq faced a military threat, Bush hoped Hussein would open his country to inspections, relinquish his alleged weapons of mass destruction, flee, or be toppled. When Hussein admitted inspectors yet remained obstructive, Bush denounced the dictator's defiance and believed America's credibility was at stake. Without resolving the ambiguities and inconsistencies in his strategy of coercive diplomacy and failing to assess the consequences of an invasion or to plan effectively for its many contingencies, Bush ordered U.S. troops to invade Iraq. How can the current civil wars in the Middle East be resolved? This volume brings together academics, experts, and practitioners to explore this question. The book covers the history of civil wars in the region during the 20th century, and then examines the specific causes, drivers, and dynamics of the ongoing civil wars in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Updated for a second edition, the book argues that while these are very different cases of civil war, there are patterns that are important to point out at the outset. First, while each of the conflicts appears to be a relatively recent phenomenon, each has a long historical tail. Second, each of the civil wars had deep and complex domestic drivers and dynamics over issues of governance, political identity, and resources; at the same time, all of the conflicts have had deep regional and international components. Finally, all of these civil wars have been affected by the presence or entrance of armed transnational non-state actors, which have had far greater involvement in the Middle Eastern civil wars compared to other regions. The book concludes that these conflicts will require a mixture of local, regional, and international interventions to bring them to an end, but that none of the conflicts are likely to end cleanly through either a negotiated settlement or a clear victory by one party or the other. Despite this pessimistic overall assessment, the book emphasizes that policymakers should use knowledge of civil wars in the Middle East to develop and pursue specific national, regional and global policies. These should be built around mitigating the worst effects of the conflicts and towards ultimate resolution.

The story of globalization in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as experienced by ordinary people in the Chinese river town of Zhenjiang. Fear swept Zhenjiang as British soldiers gathered outside the city walls in the summer of 1842. Already suspicious of foreigners, locals had also heard of the suffering the British inflicted two months earlier, in Zhapu. A wave of suicides and mercy killings ensued: rather than leave their families to the invaders, hundreds of women killed themselves and their children or died at the hands of male family members. British observers decried an "Asian culture" of ritual suicide. In reality, the event was sui generis-a tragic result of colliding local and global forces in nineteenth-century China. Xin Zhang's groundbreaking history examines the intense negotiations between local societies and global changes that created modern China. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, world-historic political, economic, and technological developments transformed the textures of everyday life in places like Zhenjiang, a midsize river town in China's prosperous Lower Yangzi region. Drawing on rare primary sources, including handwritten diaries and other personal writings, Zhang offers a ground-level view of globalization in the city. We see civilians coping with the traumatic international encounters of the Opium War; Zhenjiang brokers bankrolling Shanghai's ascendance as a cosmopolitan commercial hub; and merchants shipping goods to market, for the first time, on steamships.
