"Dans le cadre de son protectorat sur le Cambodge, la France entreprend de modifier l'organisation politique, sociale, économique du royaume khmer afin de le "moderniser." Elle s'appuie alors sur les concepts de "mission civilisatrice" et de "mise en valeur". Inscrite à l'échelle de la province cambodgienne de Kampong Thom, cette étude cherche en quoi près d'un siècle de présence française a changé la vie de la masse des Cambodgiens, les habitants des campagnes, et fait évoluer les structures de la société entre le milieu du x lx' siècle et l'indépendance en 1953. Elle s'appuie sur les abondantes sources coloniales françaises, confrontées aux sources khmères, afin que le point de vue des Cambodgiens soit pleinement pris en compte. Les problèmes traités couvrent la relation des habitants à leur roi et à l'État, le renforcement de l'intégration du Cambodge à l'économie-monde, l'évolution des productions agricoles et artisanales, les conséquences environnementales de la colonisation, l'abolition de l'esclavage et ses conséquences, les relations entre hommes et femmes, les réformes du bouddhisme theravada, l'introduction de la médecine et de l'école occidentales, les stratégies des élites rurales pour perdurer, la vie quotidienne... Anglo-Chinese Encounters Before the Opium War: A Tale of Two Empires Over Two Centuries studies the fascinating encounters between the two historic empires from Queen Elizabeth I's first letter to the Ming Emperor Wanli in 1583, to Lord Palmerston's letter to the Minister of China in 1840. Starting with Queen Elizabeth I's letter to the Chinese Emperor and ending with the letter from Lord Palmerston to the Minister of China just before the Opium War, this book explores the long journey in between from cultural diplomacy to gunboat diplomacy. It interweaves the most known diplomatic efforts at the official level with the much unknown intellectual interactions at the people-to-people level, from missionaries to scholars, from merchants to travelers and from artists to scientists. This book adopts a novel "mirror" approach by pairing and comparing people, texts, commodities, artworks, architecture, ideologies, operating systems and world views of the two empires.
