In This Flame Within Manijeh Moradian revises conventional histories of Iranian migration to the United States as a post-1979 phenomenon characterized by the flight of pro-Shah Iranians from the Islamic Republic and recounts the experiences of Iranian foreign students who joined a global movement against US imperialism during the 1960s and 1970s. On 8 February 1971, Marxist revolutionaries attacked the gendarmerie outpost at the village of Siyahkal in Iran's Gilan province. Barely two months later, the Iranian People's Fada'i Guerrillas officially announced their existence and began a long, drawn-out urban guerrilla war against the Shah's regime. In Call to Arms, Ali Rahnema provides a comprehensive history of the Fada'is, beginning by asking why so many of Iran's best and brightest chose revolutionary Marxism in the face of absolutist rule. He traces how radicalised university students from different ideological backgrounds morphed into the Marxist Fada'is in 1971, and sheds light on their theory, practice and evolution. While the Fada'is failed to directly bring about the fall of the Shah, Rahnema shows they had a lasting impact on society and they ultimately saw their objective achieved.

Jacqueline Saper, named after Jackie Kennedy, was born in Tehran to Iranian and British parents. As a teenager, she witnesses the civil unrest of the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued to live in the Islamic Republic during its most volatile times as well as the Iran-Iraq War. A ground-breaking study of political transformations in non-Western societies, this book applies anthropological, sociological and political concepts to the recent history of Iran to explore the role played by a ritual theatrical performance (Ta'ziyeh) and its symbols on the construction of public mobilisations. With particular attention to three formative phases - the 1978-79 Islamic Revolution, the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War, and the 2009 Green Movement - the author concentrates on the relations between symbols of the ritual performance and the public sphere to shed light on the ways in which the symbols of Ta'ziyeh were used to claim political legitimacy. Thus, the book elucidates how symbols and images of a ritual performance can be utilised by 'tricksters', such as political actors and fanatical religious leaders, to take advantage of the prolongation of a state of transition within a society, and so manipulate the public in order to mobilise crowds and movements to fulfil their own interests and concerns. An insightful analysis of political mobilisation explained in terms of a set of interrelated master concepts such as 'liminality', 'trickster' and 'schismogenesis', Power, Legitimacy and the Public Sphere integrates theoretical, empirical and 'diagnostic' perspectives in order to investigate and illustrate links between the public sphere and religious and cultural rituals. At the outbreak of the Islamic revolution on 1979, a small religious group called the Forqan emerged. While fighting Khomeini, the Forqan also tried to gain supporters and adherents through religious lectures and distribution of religious pamphlets called the Forqan ('the Truth, ' 'the right path'), the way of the Quran. After a series of successful assassinations of Khomeini's supporters, the regime fought back against the Forqan and defeated the group. Outside of Shiraz in the Fars Province of southwestern Iran lies "Aliabad."
