By the turn of the millennium, the East Mediterranean region had become a place of foreigners to Latin Christians living in Western Europe. Nevertheless, in the eleventh century numerous Latin Christian pilgrims streamed toward the East and Jerusalem in anticipation of the end times. The Apocalypse did not materialize as some had anticipated, but instead over the course of the next few centuries an expansion of Latin Christendom did. This expansion would transform the political, economic, and cultural landscape of both East and West and alter the course of Mediterranean history. This volume presents 22 critical studies on this crucial period (1000-1500) in the development of the Western expansion into the Eastern Mediterranean. These works deal with economy and trade, migration and colonization, crusade and conquest, military orders, as well as religious diversity and cross-cultural interaction. It includes a bibliography of important works published in Western languages together with an introduction by the editor.

For centuries, the Mediterranean Sea was the main arena for international interactions, before it was replaced by the Atlantic Ocean and subsequently by the Pacific. Nevertheless, as the historical meeting place between East and West, the East Mediterranean was the focus of significant superpower competition during the Cold War and still has strategic significance. Indeed, the East Mediterranean is an arena from which it is possible to project force into the Middle East. It is the location of important East-West routes such as the Silk Road and the Suez Canal (on the way to the Gulf and India). In addition, the region is the focal point for many important international issues, with radical Islam, international terrorism and nuclear proliferation embedded in its regional politics. This article initially reviews the breakdown of the Pax Americana in the 21st Century in the Eastern Mediterranean and the emerging strategic landscape with the transformation from a unipolar to a multi-polar subsystem. Subsequently, the article analyzes the strategic implications of this new predicament: Increased Russian presence and Turkish activism, the potential for more terrorism, increasing conflict over energy, and the emergence of a Cypriot-Greek-Israeli axis. The erosion in the statist order along the shores of the Mediterranean brings to the forefront Islamic forces that add a civilizational dimension to the discord in this region. The article concludes with a review of the ramifications of the developing situation for Israel and with several policy recommendations.

"Le cadre géographique et chronologique retenu par cet ouvrage collectif le place immédiatement sous les auspices de Fernand Braudel. Comme la fameuse Méditerranée de celui-ci, il semble osciller entre ce qui fait l'unité économique et culturelle du bassin méditerranéen, et ce qui au contraire le divise de façon radicale, essentiellement le conflit entre Islam et Chrétienté. Mais en rassemblant des contributions de spécialistes des deux bords, il tente de connecter des historiographies rarement amenées à se rencontrer. Les affrontements entre Chrétienté et Islam se poursuivent à cette époque, et des références à la croisade ou au djihad sont employées à l'appui de la revendication d'une souveraineté universelle, ou de la légitimation d'une action aux yeux de l'opinion. Mais les conflits internes aux deux camps l'emportent, et amènent à des alliances plus ou moins explicites entre "chrétiens" et "musulmans", tandis que les échanges commerciaux s'intensifient. La circulation de biens matériels et les transferts de technologie de part et d'autre de la frontière sont attestés, souvent dans un contexte d'opposition sourde ou de compétition. La notion même de frontière se précise alors, à travers l'essor de la cartographie, l'affirmation de la souveraineté des États sur les territoires, et la conclusion de traités. L'évolution de l'art de la guerre amène un renforcement des lignes de frontière et du contrôle du centre politique sur les périphéries. Les juristes s'emploient à légitimer l'appropriation de la mer par les États à travers la notion "d'eaux territoriales". Néanmoins, des zones de l'entre-deux demeurent, et offrent des ressources à des spécialistes de l'affrontement aussi bien que de la négociation et de la circulation, dont plusieurs apparaissent dans ce livre en tant que groupes ou individus. Selon une démarche aujourd'hui bien établie chez les historiens, les contributions à ce volume combinent une approche locale et une approche globale, qui s'éloignent des grands déterminismes géographiques et économiques braudéliens. Des fragments de vie peuvent, par leur particularité, révéler un aspect plus vaste et représentatif du type de relations qui s'instaurent alors en Méditerranée, en un temps où course, transport et commerce sont étroitement imbriqués."--P. Authority and Control in the Countryside looks at the economic, religious, political and cultural instruments that local and regional powers in the late antique to early medieval Mediterranean and Near East used to manage their rural hinterlands. Measures of direct control - land ownership, judicial systems, garrisons and fortifications, religious and administrative appointments, taxes and regulation - and indirect control - monuments and landmarks, cultural styles and artistic models, intellectual and religious influence, and economic and bureaucratic standard-setting - are examined to reconstruct the various means by which authority was asserted over the countryside. Unified by its thematic and spatial focus, this book offers an array of interdisciplinary approaches, allowing for important comparisons across a wide but connected geographical area in the transition from the Sasanian and Roman to the Islamic period.
