Why biography? This collection of essays on the problems and functions of biography, and particularly the biography of writers, thinkers and artists, investigates a subject of enduring importance for those interested in culture and society. In the last century, it has been a controversial subject, as old models of biographical writing were attacked and superseded, while critics and theorists questioned the once self-evident value of the biography of writers. Yet the genre continues to attract notable authors and is unfailingly popular with readers. The present volume, while containing essays by practising biographers, is intended primarily as a stimulus to critical thinking. It focuses on the diverse functions assumed by life-writing in different European countries at different periods, challenging both the notion of a genre with constant characteristics and aims and the view of modern biography as the happy culmination of centuries of progress.

"Qui est digne d'avoir une Vie, rédigée, recopiée, interprétée, illustrée ? Les biographies à l'aube de l'époque moderne concernent d'abord les "illustres", avant de s'intéresser aux auteurs et aux artistes. Avant l'apparition des récits de vie isolés ou en recueils, les indications biographiques se glissent dans le paratexte, les types d'approche historiques et apologétiques se mêlent et ces textes sous-estiment la valeur de la création esthétique. L'aptitude de la narration à se constituer en fables et en symboles rend souvent illusoire la présence du vrai. Pour donner aux Vies une visée apologétique ou didactique, le récit cherche à donner aux vies particulières un cadre typique, qui satisfasse à des valeurs morales ou nationales et puisse proposer des canons ou modèles. Pour simuler la référence particulière, c'est à l'oeuvre qu'on demande d'apporter les éléments biographiques qui, réécrits, fusionnent la persona affichée par l'auteur, lue comme réellement vécue, son tempérament supposé, et le jugement qu'en offre le biographe-critique. L'émergence du genre des Vies à la période moderne s'effectue à des dates décalées dans les trois aires culturelles couvertes ici : comprendre l'évolution de ce genre renouvelé de l'antique mais désormais différent dans ses enjeux, demande qu'on la suive pas à pas, .à travers des cas, décrits dans la matérialité et les contextes de leur publication. Frances Partridge at the age of 100 has had a new lease of life and decided she would like to publish another volume of diaries which will cover the years 1972-75. Now recognised as one of the great British diarists of the century, she was born in Bloomsbury in 1900, the daughter of a progressive mother and architect father whose friends included Henry James and Arthur Conan Doyle. After studying Moral Sciences and English at Cambridge, she worked a bookshop in London and became part of the Bloomsbury Group, encountering Virginia Woolf, the Bells, Roger Fry and Maynard Keynes. She met and fell in love with Ralph Partridge who was at the time married to Dora Carrington. After the death of Lytton Strachey, with whom she was in love, Carrington committed suicide. Ralph and Frances married in 1933. During the war they were both pacifists and opened their house, Ham Spray, to numerous strays of war. After it was over they enjoyed the happiest time of their life together, entertaining friends such as E M Forster, Robert Kee and Duncan Grant. This life of great warmth and friendship was brought to an abrupt end when Ralph died of a heart attack in 1960. Three years later another tragedy struck when their only son, Burgo, died at the age of 28 from a brain haemorrhage. 'I have utterly lost heart: I want no more of this cruel life, ' Frances wrote and yet she made a decision 'to live in the present' and 'to get a better seat on my bicycle'. Despite such enormous suffering, she maintained an astonishing appetite for life, whether for her friends, travelling, botany, or music. Her diaries, written without thought of publication, chronicle a remarkable life. Beautifully written, full of an infectious enthusiasm and unending curiosity, they are utterly riveting and rank amongst the greatest diaries of the twentieth century.

Who is Frances Gregg? In her youth she was a poet in her own right, a friend of Ezra Pound, and an intimate of Hilda Doolittle and John Cowper Powys. In our literary history, particularly the history of Modernism, she has been a mysterious presence.
